Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync and Google Photos backup are separate upload controls, not two names for the same setting. With Samsung’s compatible-device feature enabled, selected photos and videos are stored in your Google Account and can be viewed in Google Photos or at photos.google.com. Google Photos can also back up camera and other device folders independently. An image appearing in either app does not, by itself, prove it is backed up.
How Samsung Gallery sync differs from Google Photos backup
Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync starts from Samsung Gallery: it sends selected media from an eligible Samsung device to the connected personal Google Account. Google Photos Backup is controlled in Google Photos and can upload the camera and selected device folders. You can use one, the other, or both, depending on the settings available to your device and account.

Samsung’s instructions say this Gallery sync feature requires a compatible Samsung device, Android 13 or newer, and a personal Google Account. Availability can vary by model, region, and account type. See Google’s Samsung Gallery sync instructions for current eligibility and setup details.

What syncs, and where the photos are stored
When Gallery Cloud Sync is enabled, you choose which eligible content to sync. That can include camera-roll photos and videos, as well as selected device folders such as Downloads or Screenshots. Folder selection matters: you can leave the main camera roll off and still sync chosen folders. Some associated metadata, including timestamps, location, and favourites status, may sync too. Samsung has access through its apps to media uploaded by this feature and some associated metadata.

The uploaded copy resides in the connected Google Account and uses its storage. Samsung Gallery sync stores media in original quality. Google Photos Backup has its own quality setting: Google’s backup-quality guidance explains that Original quality keeps the same resolution and counts toward account storage.
Google Photos can also show files that are only on your phone. Therefore, seeing a picture in the app—or in Samsung Gallery—is not proof that a cloud copy exists. Confirm the account, upload setting, selected folders, and backup status before deleting a local file or assuming it is protected.

How to check whether a photo is backed up
- In Samsung Gallery: open Gallery settings and inspect Sync photos and videos. Check the linked account and which albums or folders are selected.
- In Google Photos: check that the intended Google Account is selected, then inspect Back up and Back up device folders. A folder visible in the app may not be selected for upload.
- Check the backup status: use the status shown in Google Photos rather than inferring upload completion from a thumbnail. Google’s Check your backup page describes where to find account, status, and folder settings.
- Check account storage: review available Google Account space before enabling either upload route or changing quality. Backed-up items count toward that storage.
If an expected image is missing, confirm the signed-in account and backup state, then check the relevant device folder and Google Photos trash. Google’s Android missing-photos guidance covers these checks.
What happens when you delete, move, or edit synced photos
Deleting a synced item
For media in Gallery Cloud Sync, deleting it in Samsung Gallery or Google Photos removes the synced item from both apps and the cloud. Items sent to Google Photos trash may later be permanently deleted under Google’s retention rules. If you want a cloud copy to remain, do not delete a synced item until you have checked how that action applies to it.

Moving photos into private storage
Moving a backed-up photo into a Samsung private album deletes its Google Photos cloud copy after confirmation. Secure Folder behaves differently: moving an item there does not automatically remove the cloud copy. Delete that copy separately if you want it gone from Google Photos.
Editing
An edit in Samsung Gallery syncs to other Samsung devices, while Google Photos stores the edit as a new photo; the original and edited version may both appear in Google Photos. In this Gallery-edit scenario, the unedited original remains on the Samsung device rather than being stored as a separate cloud original. An edit made on the web or another device appears in Google Photos but does not overwrite the Samsung phone’s original; you can review and apply out-of-sync changes. Deleting an original does not necessarily delete its edited copy, and deleting the edit does not necessarily delete the original.

Using Free up space
Google Photos’ Free up space removes local copies that are already backed up. Those files may disappear from local Samsung Gallery albums while remaining available in Google Photos and on the web. With Gallery Cloud Sync enabled, cloud media may still appear in device folders whose backup is enabled. Check backup status first if you need to keep a local copy.
What turning off Gallery sync does—and does not do
Turning off the Gallery sync setting stops future uploads and removes cloud-media access in Samsung apps. Previously backed-up files remain in the Google Account and can still be accessed in Google Photos. Turning off the toggle does not itself revoke the app’s Google Account link or delete the cloud files.

To end the linked app’s access, remove Gallery Cloud Sync from the linked-app settings in your Google Account. That revokes the linkage but does not delete items already backed up. Manage those cloud files separately in Google Photos.
