Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 for a lighter body and wider, 4:3 inner screen; choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra for larger displays, a reported 3x optical telephoto camera and a larger rated battery. The Ultra’s extra screen area comes with 14 g more weight and a higher launch price. Which feels better in hand depends on you, so try both if you can.

At a glance: the main differences

Decision point Galaxy Z Fold8 Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra What it means
Inner display 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X, 2,184 × 1,968 pixels; adaptive 1–120 Hz 8.0-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X, 2,504 × 2,256 pixels; adaptive 1–120 Hz The Ultra offers more nominal workspace; the Fold8 has a wider 4:3 layout. Rounded corners reduce usable area compared with the nominal diagonal. Samsung specifications
Cover display 5.5-inch WUXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X, 1,248 × 1,972 pixels; adaptive 1–120 Hz 6.5-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X, 1,080 × 2,520 pixels; adaptive 1–120 Hz The Ultra gives you a larger external screen. The shorter, wider Fold8 has a different grip and typing feel. Samsung specifications
Folded dimensions 81.9 × 123.9 × 9.7 mm 72.8 × 158.4 × 8.9 mm The Ultra is taller and narrower when closed.
Unfolded dimensions 161.4 × 123.9 × 4.5 mm 143.2 × 158.4 × 4.1 mm The Ultra is thinner by the unfolded-thickness measure; Samsung says this measurement excludes the main-screen frame.
Weight 201 g 215 g The Fold8 is 14 g lighter. Actual one-hand comfort is personal.
Rear cameras 50 MP wide and 50 MP ultra-wide; no telephoto zoom lens, according to Tom’s Guide Samsung lists a 200 MP main camera and 50 MP ultra-wide; TechRadar reports a 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom The Ultra offers more reported optical-zoom flexibility. Megapixel counts alone do not establish photo quality. TechRadar comparison; Tom’s Guide review
Rated battery capacity 4,800 mAh 5,000 mAh The Ultra has the larger rated capacity; this does not by itself establish how long either lasts in your use. Samsung lists 45 W charging for the Ultra in its U.S. launch notice. Samsung U.S. launch notice
U.S. launch starting price $1,899.99 for 256 GB $2,099.99 TechRadar reported a $200 launch-price gap. These are historical launch prices, not verified current offers. TechRadar comparison

Which phone feels better to carry and use?

The most important difference is not just screen size; it is shape. Folded, the Fold8 is shorter and wider, while the Ultra is taller and narrower. Open, the Fold8’s inner screen is a wider 4:3 presentation. TechRadar describes it as more passport-like, while it characterizes the Ultra’s near-square 1.11:1 inner screen as better suited to square-shaped productivity content such as spreadsheets. Those are editorial judgments, not guaranteed ergonomic or app-layout results. TechRadar’s comparison

For reading, gaming, and general content, Samsung positions the Fold8’s 4:3 inner screen as an immersive format. If your work regularly involves wide or square-ish layouts, the Ultra’s larger canvas may be more useful. The display diagonals are measured differently from the usable rounded-corner area, and app behavior can vary, so picture your own everyday apps rather than choosing on inches alone. Weight also points in opposite directions from thickness: the Fold8 is lighter at 201 g, but the Ultra is thinner when unfolded at 4.1 mm versus 4.5 mm. These measurements do not tell you which phone will feel more secure or comfortable in one hand. If possible, hold each folded, type on its cover screen, and open it to use the apps you rely on.

Does the Ultra’s camera justify the upgrade?

If optical zoom is important to you, the Ultra is the clearer fit on the available camera details. TechRadar reports a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom on the Ultra, while Tom’s Guide says the standard Fold8 has 50 MP wide and ultra-wide rear cameras and no telephoto zoom lens. Samsung highlights the Ultra’s 200 MP main camera and 50 MP ultra-wide. These specifications describe camera hardware, not comparative photo quality; resolution alone is not a reliable measure of results. TechRadar; Tom’s Guide

For casual snapshots or wide and ultra-wide framing, the cited details do not establish that the Ultra will take better pictures in every situation. Pay for its camera advantage if the telephoto reach is a task you expect to use, rather than treating the Ultra name or 200 MP figure as a guarantee.

Battery, price, and availability

Samsung’s specification table lists a 4,800 mAh battery for the Fold8 and 5,000 mAh for the Ultra; its U.S. launch notice also lists 45 W charging for the Ultra. A larger rated capacity does not promise longer battery life under every workload. Tom’s Guide reported results from its own 5G web-surfing battery test: 12 hours 19 minutes for the Fold8 and 14 hours 33 minutes for the Ultra. Those are publication-specific test results, not typical-use guarantees. Samsung specifications; Samsung U.S. launch notice; Tom’s Guide test

Who should buy the Galaxy Z Fold8?

  • Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 if lower weight matters more to you than the Ultra’s extra screen area and camera flexibility.
  • Its 4:3 inner-screen presentation and 7.6-inch diagonal suit buyers who want a foldable for reading, gaming, and general content, without needing the Ultra’s larger canvas.
  • It is the better fit if the Ultra’s reported optical telephoto camera or higher launch price does not solve a frequent task for you. Compare today’s local prices rather than assuming the launch gap still applies.

Who should buy the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra?

  • Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if its 8.0-inch inner display or 6.5-inch cover screen would make your daily work more comfortable.
  • It is the more compelling option if you specifically want the reported 3x optical telephoto camera or value a larger rated battery enough to accept the extra weight.
  • Samsung positions the Ultra for demanding creative workflows, but that is manufacturer positioning rather than independent proof of superior performance in a particular app. Samsung U.S. launch notice

How to make the choice

  1. List the apps and tasks you use most on the unfolded screen; decide whether the wider 4:3 Fold8 layout or the Ultra’s larger, near-square canvas better fits them.
  2. Try typing on each cover screen and holding each phone folded. The Fold8 is wider and lighter; the Ultra is taller and narrower.
  3. Ask whether you regularly need optical zoom. If you do, the Ultra’s reported 3x optical telephoto is a concrete hardware difference; if not, it may not justify paying more.
  4. Compare current local prices for the same storage capacity, including any taxes or promotions. The published launch figures are not current offers.
