For photography versatility, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the stronger choice on paper. Samsung lists both 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras on the S26 Ultra, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has one 3x optical telephoto. The Fold8 Ultra’s advantage is its large folding screen, which can make reviewing and editing photos more comfortable. These are specification-based conclusions—not the result of a controlled, side-by-side image-quality test.
Which Samsung phone should photographers choose?
Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you often photograph distant subjects or want more dedicated optical framing options. Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if the ability to review, edit, or show photos on a large inner screen matters more to you than having a second optical telephoto camera.
This comparison is specifically between the 2026 Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung also sells a differently configured Galaxy Z Fold8; its camera system should not be confused with the Fold8 Ultra’s.

Why the S26 Ultra has more flexibility for distant subjects
Optical zoom uses a camera’s lens system to frame a subject. The S26 Ultra’s dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras give it two listed optical telephoto choices, while the Fold8 Ultra lists one at 3x. That makes the S26 Ultra the more flexible specification-based option for subjects such as performers, wildlife, or details that are difficult to approach.
Samsung’s UK camera guide also describes 2x and 10x on the S26 Ultra as optical-quality zoom and lists digital zoom up to 100x. For the Fold8 Ultra, the same guide lists 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. Optical-quality and digital zoom should not be presented as additional optical lenses, and a maximum zoom figure alone does not show how much detail a photo will retain.

What the shared 200MP main cameras do—and do not—tell you
Both phones list a 200MP main wide camera, and both list a 50MP ultra-wide camera. That makes the headline resolution figures straightforward to compare, but megapixels alone do not tell you which phone will preserve more detail, handle challenging light better, or produce the more pleasing result. Sensor behavior, image processing, light, movement, and shooting technique also affect the photograph.

Samsung says the Fold8 Ultra adds HDR support to its 200MP main camera and introduces a new 50MP ultra-wide camera in its July 22, 2026 launch announcement. Those are manufacturer-reported features, not independent evidence that the Fold8 Ultra takes better HDR or ultra-wide photos than the S26 Ultra.
When the Fold8 Ultra’s screen matters more than extra reach
The Fold8 Ultra’s 8-inch inner display is a practical advantage if you like to inspect images on a larger screen, make edits while away from a computer, or show photos to someone nearby. The S26 Ultra has a conventional 6.9-inch display, so it is the simpler fit if you prefer a standard phone form factor.

That difference is about the experience after capture, not evidence of better camera output. A bigger screen may make reviewing an image more comfortable, but it does not establish that the camera captured more detail or rendered color more accurately.
Can either phone be called the better camera overall?
Not from these specifications alone. Samsung promotes Nightography for the S26 Ultra and lists 8K/30fps video in its UK guide, but those manufacturer claims do not constitute matched independent testing. The available product and launch information does not establish which phone takes better low-light stills, portraits, skin tones, moving-subject photos, or stabilized video in real-world use.

For a buying decision based on documented hardware, the S26 Ultra’s second optical telephoto camera is the clearest photography advantage. If your priority is a folding screen for reviewing and editing, the Fold8 Ultra offers a different benefit. A definitive image-quality winner would require credible side-by-side samples or independent testing under comparable conditions.
