The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 is a strong fit if you want a light, pocketable clamshell that opens into a large-screen phone and lets you handle selected tasks on its cover display. Its Snapdragon-equipped versions also bring a performance lift, and the folding hinge gives you flexible ways to frame photos and video. The case against it is price: reviewers describe a mostly iterative upgrade, with familiar camera hardware and only a modest battery gain.
Samsung announced the phone at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, 2026, according to its Australian guide; Samsung’s US launch release is dated August 5 and says sales began August 7 in select markets, followed by a wider rollout. Availability is market-specific, so check local stock and configuration before buying.
What are the Galaxy Z Flip8’s main pros and cons?
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Light, slim clamshell design: Samsung lists 180g weight and 6.1mm thickness unfolded for its Australian model. | High US starting price: Samsung listed $1,199.99 before trade-in; current offers and local prices can differ. |
| Large 6.9-inch main screen and a 4.1-inch FlexWindow cover screen for quick tasks without unfolding. | Reviewers describe the generation as incremental, with familiar rear-camera hardware and a battery that is only slightly better in testing. |
| Newer processing in the relevant regional version; independent testing found a performance improvement on the Snapdragon model. | Chipset varies by market, making imported-device comparisons less straightforward. |
| Hinge positioning and FlexCam features make hands-free framing and vlogging more convenient. | TechRadar calls image quality middling; flexible shooting does not make the cameras a class-leading system. |
What are the advantages of the Galaxy Z Flip8?
It folds into a compact, light phone
The Flip8’s defining advantage is its clamshell design. Samsung Australia lists it at 180g and 6.1mm thick when unfolded, and says it is eight grams lighter than the Flip7. The 6.9-inch AMOLED main screen gives you a large display when open, while the phone folds down for carrying. That trade-off is worthwhile if you specifically want a foldable; a conventional phone may be a better fit if you do not value the folding form.
The cover screen can handle quick tasks
Samsung’s 4.1-inch FlexWindow supports selected apps, widgets, alerts, music controls, and camera previews without opening the phone. That can make brief interactions quicker and lets you use the rear cameras for a preview while framing a shot. Tom’s Guide found the additions useful but also judged the cover-screen experience underused, so its value depends on whether the available tasks match your routine.

Performance and the main display improve the experience
Do not assume every regional Flip8 has the same processor. Samsung says the Australian model uses Exynos 2600 in select markets and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in others. Tom’s Guide credits the Snapdragon version with substantial performance gains; those results should not automatically be applied to a different regional SKU.
Tom’s Guide also measured a peak brightness of 2,150 nits on the main display and found it more usable outdoors. That is the review’s measurement, not a guarantee of the same brightness under every setting or condition.

The hinge offers flexible photo and video framing
The hinge can hold the phone at different angles, and Samsung promotes FlexCam use for hands-free shooting. Tom’s Guide praised the vlogging versatility and Horizon Lock stabilization, while TechRadar also saw a vlogging use. These are useful advantages for framing and recording, but they do not mean the phone replaces a dedicated camera for every creator or situation.

What are the disadvantages and trade-offs?
The price is high for an iterative upgrade
Samsung’s US listing showed a starting price of $1,199.99 before trade-in at the time reviewed. Tom’s Guide cited a US launch price of $1,199 for the 256GB model and reported that it was $100 above the previous generation. These are US price references, not a current quote for every buyer: taxes, storage, trade-in value, promotions, and regional pricing can change the amount.

Tom’s Guide and TechRadar characterize the Flip8 as an iterative generation rather than a broad redesign. If you already own a recent Flip, the price is harder to justify unless the performance, display, or specific FlexCam changes solve a problem you actually have.
Battery life is not a major leap
Samsung lists a 4,300mAh battery and 25W wired charging, as well as wireless charging. In Tom’s Guide’s battery-drain test, the Flip8 lasted 12 hours 5 minutes—under half an hour ahead of the Flip7 in that review’s testing. That is a publication-specific test result, not a promise of everyday runtime; actual battery life varies with use, settings, network conditions, and regional hardware.

The camera hardware remains familiar
Samsung lists a 50MP wide rear camera and a 12MP ultrawide, alongside a 10MP front camera. Samsung emphasizes image processing and FlexCam features, but reviewers describe the camera hardware as little changed. TechRadar found image quality middling. The Flip8’s stronger case is the flexibility of positioning and video features, not a wholesale camera upgrade.
Regional variants need careful checking
Samsung’s Australian product information lists both Exynos 2600 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, depending on market. It also lists 256GB and 512GB storage with 12GB memory for that market. Check the exact local model, processor, storage, and available software features before comparing performance claims or considering an import.

Is the Galaxy Z Flip8 worth upgrading from your old phone?
Whether the Flip8 is worth upgrading to depends on your current phone and how much you want the foldable form. The most persuasive upgrade case is for someone moving to a clamshell for the first time, or replacing an older device and prioritizing compact carrying, a large unfolded display, quick cover-screen tasks, and flexible video framing.
For a recent Flip owner, the case is less compelling if the current phone’s speed, battery, and cameras already meet your needs. The reviews characterize the design and camera hardware as familiar, and Tom’s Guide found only a small battery-test gain over the Flip7. Compare the current price in your market with the specific improvements you would use rather than treating the new generation as an automatic upgrade.
What to check before buying
- Local price and stock: Samsung’s US price references are not a quote for other regions, and offers change. Confirm availability with Samsung or a local retailer.
- Exact regional model: Verify whether the phone you are buying uses Exynos 2600 or Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy.
- Storage configuration: Samsung Australia lists 256GB and 512GB with 12GB memory; other markets may differ.
- Your cover-screen habits: Check whether the selected apps and widgets you want are supported in your region and software version.
- Charging setup: Samsung lists 25W wired and wireless charging, but the cited product information does not establish whether a wall adapter is included.
