The current model in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip line is the Galaxy Z Flip8. Samsung announced it on August 6, 2026, with sales starting August 7 in select markets and expanding from there. It keeps the compact clamshell format, enlarges the cover screen to 4.1 inches, and adds a camera and software set that Samsung positions around quick, self-expressive use. Whether it is the right upgrade depends less on the headline features than on your current phone, your region’s chipset, and how much you rely on the cover screen.
Everything below reflects Samsung’s own published material as of early October 2026: its global newsroom announcement, its Australia feature and specification guide, and its Ireland model comparison. No independent review or hands-on testing is cited, so the figures describe what Samsung lists, not what the phone measures in use.
What the Galaxy Z Flip8 is and when it arrived
The Flip8 sits in the same clamshell family as the Flip7, Flip6 and Flip5. Samsung’s timeline has three milestones that are often confused:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- July 22, 2026: the Flip8 was launched at Galaxy Unpacked, according to Samsung Australia’s guide.
- August 6, 2026: Samsung’s global newsroom published its launch announcement for the Flip8 and other new Galaxy Z products.
- August 7, 2026: sales began in select markets, with rollout expanding globally after that. Samsung says the phones are sold through carriers, retailers, Samsung.com and Samsung Experience Stores, and availability varies by country.
Samsung describes the Flip8 as designed for self-expression and quick interaction. It also reports that pre-orders for the new Galaxy Z series rose by more than 30% compared with the previous generation. That figure is a company-reported pre-order comparison covering the series, not an independently audited result and not a sales figure for the Flip8 alone.

Design: size, weight and build
Samsung Australia lists the phone at 180 g and gives its thickness as 6.1 mm unfolded and 13.1 mm folded. Samsung Ireland’s comparison describes an Advanced Armour Aluminium frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, and notes that specifications can vary by country.
Samsung also makes claims about the hinge and the fold. It says the hinge is smoother and the crease less visible than before. Those are subjective manufacturer claims, and Samsung itself notes that crease perception depends on viewing angle and lighting. Judge them in a store under the lighting you actually use.
Water resistance: what IP48 does and does not mean
The Flip8 carries an IP48 rating. Samsung’s test basis, as stated in its Australia guide, is freshwater submersion to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes, plus protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm. Samsung advises against beach or pool use, and says the charging port should be dry before you plug in a cable.

The rating is a limited, lab-style description. It is not a blanket waterproofing or damage-proof claim, and it does not cover salt water, sand, or pool chemicals in Samsung’s guidance.
The cover screen: the FlexWindow
The Flip8 pairs a 6.9-inch AMOLED main display with a 4.1-inch cover screen, which Samsung calls the FlexWindow. The cover is the feature most buyers will use every day, because it lets you handle many tasks without opening the phone.
Samsung lists these interactions for the FlexWindow:

- Widgets and alerts
- Music playback control
- Camera previews, including using the cover as a viewfinder for rear-camera selfies
- Selected apps that run without unfolding the device
- Now Brief and Gemini access, which Samsung’s global launch release specifically highlights
Which apps and features appear on the cover depends on the software version and on app support, so treat this as Samsung’s list rather than a guarantee for every app on your phone.
Camera system
Samsung’s guide lists three cameras: a 50 MP main camera that also serves as FlexCam, a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10 MP front camera. Samsung Ireland’s comparison describes the same camera arrangement for the Flip8, so the upgrade story is about processing and tools rather than a higher megapixel count.
The features Samsung highlights are:
- FlexMode: hands-free capture using the phone’s folded posture.
- FlexCam: the main camera’s flexible-capture mode, which Samsung pairs with the cover-screen viewfinder.
- AI-powered bokeh for background blur.
- Super Steady, which Samsung says uses 360-degree horizon detection to stabilize video.
- Photo Assist for editing and enhancement.
Samsung also describes new image-processing features for the Flip8. The guide does not publish independent image-quality results, so compare samples yourself if the camera is a deciding factor.

Performance, memory, battery and charging
The chipset depends on where you buy. Samsung Australia lists the Exynos 2600 in select markets and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in others. Do not assume one chip applies everywhere: check the specification page for your country before comparing performance with another phone.
Other published specifications:
- Memory: 12 GB
- Storage: 256 GB or 512 GB
- Battery: 4,300 mAh, a capacity figure Samsung publishes. It is not a measured battery-life result, and no independent battery test is available.
- Charging: 25W wired fast charging, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging
- Connectivity: 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth, NFC and USB Type-C
Software: One UI 9 and Android 17
Samsung Australia’s guide says the Flip8 runs One UI 9 on Android 17. Samsung lists Now Brief, live translation, smart replies, writing help, photo editing and cover-screen widgets among its software capabilities. Feature availability can differ by country, software version and supported apps, so confirm the functions you need on the model sold in your market.

| Galaxy Z Flip5 | 6.7-inch | 3.4-inch | 187 g | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
The Flip8 and Flip7 share the same screen sizes, so the practical differences are weight, chipset, software version and the camera processing Samsung describes. The Flip6 and Flip5 have a smaller main display and cover screen. The weights for the Flip6 and Flip5 are listed together in Samsung’s comparison, and the comparison does not state their chipset, software or battery values.
Is the Flip8 worth upgrading to?
The answer depends on which phone you are replacing and what you use it for.
- Coming from a Flip5 or Flip6: the larger cover screen (4.1 inches against 3.4 inches) and the bigger main display (6.9 inches against 6.7 inches) are the most visible changes Samsung lists. If you use the cover for widgets or quick replies, that is the change you will notice most.
- Coming from a Flip7: the screen sizes are the same, so the case rests on the lighter weight (180 g against 188 g), the chipset in your region, One UI 9, and any camera processing you value. Weigh these against the cost of replacing a phone that already matches the screen size you like.
- If the camera is the reason: the megapixel layout is unchanged, so look at sample images from the Flip8 in person before deciding.
- If you need strong water resistance: the IP48 rating is limited. Keep the phone away from pools, beaches and salt water, and do not treat the rating as waterproofing.
- If you want the latest software features: confirm which AI and cover-screen features your carrier and country support.
Samsung’s listed upgrades and claims, such as a smoother hinge and improved crease appearance, are not independently verified, so they should weigh less in your decision than the dimensions, chipset and software you can confirm directly.

Samsung Australia’s guide lists Pink, Graphite and Cream as standard colors, with Mint available as an online exclusive in select regions. It also mentions trade-in benefits, Samsung Care+ and flexible payment options. Those offers vary by market and time.
Current base prices by country and storage tier are not established by Samsung’s published material, so check your local Samsung site, carrier, or retailer before comparing costs. When you compare offers, match the storage size (256 GB or 512 GB), the carrier variant, and the chipset for your region. If you buy a case or a charger, confirm it lists compatibility with the Flip8 and its 25W wired charging before you purchase.
Limits of the evidence
This overview is based on manufacturer material published up to early October 2026. Independent reviews, hands-on testing, measured battery life, and third-party camera comparisons are not part of it. The most reliable next step is to compare the Flip8’s listed specifications for your country with its alternatives, then test the cover screen and the fold in a store before you buy.
