The Galaxy Z Flip7 is the better phone overall, but it is an evolutionary upgrade—not an automatic reason for Flip6 owners to switch. Its much larger cover screen, thinner folded body, bigger battery and Samsung DeX support are the most meaningful improvements. The cameras and charging are largely unchanged. Choose the Flip6 only if it costs substantially less; if camera zoom, long battery life or durability is your priority, consider a conventional flagship instead.

Specifications and availability can vary by country. For U.S. model details, see Samsung’s Flip7 comparison page; its Flip6 specification page provides the older model’s details.
Why the Flip7’s cover screen matters most
The Flip7’s 4.1-inch FlexWindow is not just a larger diagonal measurement: it fills the outer face more fully than the Flip6’s 3.4-inch screen. That makes the closed phone more useful for glancing at notifications and information, and for handling quick interactions without unfolding it.
- Read more of a notification and respond to messages more comfortably.
- Check maps, weather, timers, music controls and calendar information at a glance.
- Use widgets and newer experiences such as Now Bar and Now Brief.
- Frame selfies and FlexCam photos using the rear cameras and cover-screen preview.
- Complete more quick, one-handed tasks while the phone stays closed.
The Flip6’s outer screen remains useful for widgets and quick checks, but its smaller, differently shaped panel is more limiting for substantial interactions. Some apps or features may require opening the phone, and features can depend on software version, region, language or a Samsung account. For most buyers, this change matters more than the processor name.
Displays, dimensions and everyday handling
The inner screen is larger, but still tall and narrow
The Flip7 increases the inner display from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. That gives reading, video and multitasking a little more room, though the phone retains a tall, narrow foldable format. The larger screen does not turn it into a conventional wide-screen phone, and the crease remains part of the experience.
The Flip7 is slimmer folded, not lighter
Samsung lists the Flip7 at 85.5 × 75.2 × 13.7mm when folded and 166.7 × 75.2 × 6.5mm when open. At 188g, it weighs about 1g more than the approximately 187g Flip6. The portability improvement is therefore mainly a thinner folded profile rather than a reduction in weight. Samsung’s corporate specifications give the Flip7 dimensions.
Both phones still have flexible inner screens and a hinge. Treat the inner display more carefully than a conventional glass slab: pressure, grit and impacts can pose risks, and neither model eliminates the foldable-screen crease or its associated care considerations.
Performance: newer chip, modest and mixed advantage
The Flip7 uses Samsung’s 3nm Exynos 2500, while the Flip6 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. Samsung positions the newer platform as improving CPU, GPU, NPU capability and efficiency. Independent results are less conclusive: Tom’s Guide describes a minor performance boost, while Android Authority reports Geekbench 6 and PCMark results that were similar to or, in some cases, below the Flip6’s.
For everyday apps, the processor generation alone is not a compelling reason to upgrade. Sustained behavior, efficiency and the specific task matter more than a chip label. Do not assume the Flip7 is categorically faster in every game or benchmark; buyers who prioritize demanding, sustained gaming should look beyond both models.
Battery life and charging
The Flip7’s 4,300mAh typical dual battery is 300mAh larger than the Flip6’s 4,000mAh battery—a nominal capacity increase of 7.5%. Samsung claims up to 31 hours of video playback for the Flip7 versus up to 23 hours for the Flip6, but those manufacturer playback figures are not directly comparable to independent mixed-use tests.
Independent testing varies: Tom’s Guide found a more substantial improvement in its custom test, while Android Central found the two phones nearly identical in its testing. Android Authority describes the Flip7 as adequate for moderate use rather than a battery standout, and TechRadar notes that competing flip phones can last longer. The Flip7 has the hardware advantage and usually improves endurance, but the size of the improvement depends heavily on network conditions, brightness, gaming, camera use and test methodology.

Heavy gaming, mobile data, navigation or frequent camera use can use up the Flip7’s battery advantage. If all-day heavy-use endurance is essential, a Galaxy S-series phone or a competing foldable with a larger battery is a better category to investigate.

Cameras: similar hardware, not a reason to upgrade
Both phones have a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide and a 10MP front camera. They also support FlexCam-style hands-free shooting, including using the cover screen to preview a rear-camera selfie. Samsung describes improvements to the Flip7’s processing and ProVisual Engine, but the camera system is not a fundamental hardware upgrade.
Newer processing, Nightography and AI tools can improve results in some situations, but independent reviews characterize the overall camera improvement as modest or barely noticeable. If you already own a Flip6, better photography alone is not a strong reason to move to the Flip7.
Neither phone has a dedicated telephoto camera. For distant subjects, concerts, wildlife or high-quality optical zoom, consider a phone with a telephoto system, such as a Galaxy S Ultra, iPhone Pro Max or Pixel Pro.

Software, AI features and Samsung DeX
Newer software baseline
The Flip7 launched with Android 16 and One UI 8, while the Flip6 launched with Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1. The newer model therefore starts from a later software generation and is the more forward-looking choice for someone buying today. A precise support-duration or Android-version promise should be checked against Samsung’s current policy for the buyer’s market; it should not be inferred from launch software alone.

Some One UI features may reach the Flip6 through updates, but software parity should not be assumed. A feature shown on the Flip7 can depend on Android or One UI version, a Samsung account, supported language, region or an app update—and the smaller Flip6 cover display can affect how an experience works.
DeX is exclusive to the Flip7 in this comparison
The Flip7 is the first Z Flip model to support Samsung DeX. With a compatible display and peripherals, DeX provides a desktop-style interface for using the phone on a larger screen. It is a genuine functional advantage for people who want to use their phone for a lightweight workstation; the Flip6 does not support it.
AI availability can vary
The Flip7’s larger FlexWindow is designed for newer AI-oriented experiences, including Now Bar and Now Brief. AI features can be updated, restricted by market or language, require a Samsung account, or change under future policies. Do not assume that a feature advertised for the Flip7 will arrive on the Flip6 or work identically there.

Samsung’s corporate specifications list Gorilla Glass Victus2, an Armor Aluminum frame and an Armor Flex hinge for the Flip7. These materials describe its construction, not a guarantee that it will survive a particular drop or outlast the Flip6 in real-world use. Independent reviews of both generations continue to treat foldable durability as a consideration.
Best Value
- Model name: Galaxy Z Flip7
- Operating system: Android 16
- Display Size: 6.9 inches
- Cellular technology: 5G
- Storage Capacity: 512GB of internal storage provides ample space for apps, photos, videos, and files without worrying about running out of memory
- The inner display is flexible and more sensitive to pressure and debris than ordinary cover glass.
- Do not casually remove the factory-installed inner screen protector or press hard along the crease.
- Keep sand and debris away from the hinge. Water resistance does not mean dustproofing.
- If the protector bubbles, the hinge makes unusual noises, pixels fail or the crease changes visibly, seek Samsung inspection rather than attempting a DIY repair.
- Check the exact water-resistance rating, warranty exclusions and repair terms for your market and purchase channel before buying.
Repair coverage and costs can vary. If the risk of a screen or hinge repair is a major concern, compare the applicable warranty or protection plan with your existing carrier, manufacturer or payment-card coverage.
Should a Flip6 owner upgrade?
The Flip7 is a quality-of-life upgrade, not a must-have generational leap. The case for switching depends more on how you use the outer screen and whether the price after trade-in makes sense than on the camera or processor specifications.
Upgrade to the Flip7 if
- You want the larger cover screen to handle more quick tasks while closed.
- A thinner folded phone, DeX or newer software features would change how you use it.
- More battery capacity and the chance of better endurance are worth the cost to you.
- You value a newer starting software baseline and longer remaining product life.
- Your Flip6 trade-in offer is strong enough to make the final cost attractive.
Keep the Flip6 if
- It works well and you mainly unfold it to use the inner display.
- Your main motivation is camera quality; the core camera hardware is largely the same.
- You do not use cover-screen apps or have a need for DeX.
- Your current battery meets your needs, or the Flip7 would cost close to full price after trade-in.
When calculating an upgrade, subtract only a verified trade-in credit from the Flip7 price, then include any required plan, activation, financing or other conditions. Samsung’s U.S. trade-in page is one place to check current offers; values depend on promotion and device condition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrice and value: when the older model makes sense
At launch, both generations had a U.S. starting price of $1,099.99 for 256GB. Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP file lists the Flip7 at $1,099.99 for 256GB and $1,219.99 for 512GB; the Flip6 is not listed in that file. Samsung’s September 2025 file listed the Flip6 at $1,099.99 for 256GB and $1,219.99 for 512GB. These are dated MSRP signals, not guaranteed current sale prices.
As the older model, the Flip6 may be a good buy at a substantial discount, but its street price and availability vary by retailer and market. Compare the final total for the same storage capacity, not just a headline monthly payment. A promotion may require a trade-in, carrier plan, activation, financing or account. A discounted 512GB Flip6 may still be worse value than a 256GB Flip7 if the prices are too close.
Samsung’s March 2026 file omitting the Flip6 suggests it is no longer in Samsung’s current U.S. MSRP lineup; it does not establish that every retailer or market has stopped selling it. Check seller reputation, unlocked compatibility, warranty status and return policy before buying through a third party.
When neither Flip is the right phone
- Choose a Samsung Galaxy S-series flagship if camera versatility, battery life, cooling for sustained workloads or conventional slab-phone durability matters more than folding compactly.
- Compare the Motorola Razr Ultra if you want a competing flip phone with a large cover-screen experience or are weighing battery and hardware value. Check the specific generation and local pricing; Samsung has stronger update and service positioning in independent coverage.
- Consider a Google Pixel Pro if computational photography and a conventional Android experience matter more than the clamshell form factor.
Neither Z Flip is the obvious choice for best camera zoom, longest battery life, high sustained gaming performance, low repair risk or a crease-free inner display.
Quick Recap
Which Galaxy Z Flip should you buy?
- Best overall: Galaxy Z Flip7. It offers the more useful closed-phone experience, a thinner folded design, newer software and DeX.
- Best bargain: Galaxy Z Flip6, only at a meaningful discount. Its core camera hardware and basic flip-phone experience remain compelling if the price compensates for its smaller cover screen and older platform.
- Best choice for an existing Flip6 owner: usually keep it. Switch when the FlexWindow, DeX, battery potential or a favorable trade-in makes a concrete difference.
- Best for camera zoom or heavy-use battery life: neither. A conventional flagship is a better fit for those priorities.
