First check that your Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet has a microSD card slot; not every model supports removable storage. If it does, use My Files to copy or move videos already on the device. For new Camera recordings, choose the SD card as the storage location when that setting is available, though some recording modes still save internally.
Check whether your Galaxy supports a microSD card
Samsung says microSD support varies by Galaxy model. Check the specifications for your exact phone or tablet before buying a card or searching for a storage setting. Samsung’s microSD card compatibility and file-transfer guidance explains the model-dependent support.
For high-resolution video recording, Samsung recommends microSDXC, citing its capacity and read/write capability. That recommendation does not establish one universal capacity or speed requirement for every Galaxy. Confirm your model’s supported card specifications and the needs of the recording modes you use.

How do I save existing videos to an SD card on my Samsung Galaxy?
Insert a compatible card, then use My Files to transfer the video. Samsung describes this as a file operation in My Files, rather than moving files between apps such as Gallery.

- Open My Files and navigate to the folder containing the video.
- Touch and hold a video to select it. Select additional videos if needed.
- Tap Move or Copy.
- Return to the My Files home screen and choose SD card.
- Open or create the destination folder, then tap Move here or Copy here.
Choose Copy to leave the original on internal storage as well as create a card copy. Choose Move to relocate the file off internal storage. The SD card destination appears in My Files when a card is inserted. Samsung’s Galaxy file-management instructions cover this workflow.
Set future Camera recordings to use the SD card
On a compatible device, open the Camera app’s settings and look for Storage location or similar wording, then select the SD card. The exact label and whether the option appears depend on the model and software version. Samsung’s Camera save-location instructions, updated February 4, 2026, describe the setting and its limits.

Recording modes that may still save internally
Samsung identifies 8K video, UHD video at 60 fps, GIF, burst, and RAW capture as cases that may save to internal storage even when the SD card is selected as the Camera destination. You can move those files to the card afterward using My Files.
What to check if the SD card option is missing
- Confirm the device has a card slot. The feature is not available on every Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Insert the card and check My Files. The SD card destination is shown when a card is inserted.
- Check Camera settings on the exact model. Storage-location labels and availability vary by device and software version.
- Verify the card specifications. Confirm your Galaxy’s supported capacity and the requirements for your intended recording modes; there is no single specification that applies to all models.
Can an SD card act as internal storage on Samsung?
Samsung states that Android Adoptable storage is not supported on its devices. Do not format the card as internal or adoptable storage expecting apps to treat it as built-in memory. For videos, use the card as removable storage and transfer files through My Files.
