The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL take different approaches to camera hardware, zoom and image processing; neither is the clear winner for every kind of photo. Samsung offers a dedicated 3x telephoto camera alongside its 5x lens, while Pixel pairs a 5x telephoto with computational zoom and a higher-resolution, autofocus front camera. In Tom’s Guide’s comparison of more than 200 photos, preferences shifted by scene: Samsung led in several tested categories, while Pixel was preferred for panoramas, selfies and very long zoom. Treat those results as one reviewer’s examples, then compare the kinds of shots you actually take.

What are the camera hardware differences?

The camera specifications establish what each phone’s system includes, but megapixel counts and lens labels do not predict which image will look better. Samsung’s figures come from its 2026 global announcement; Google’s are from its US English Pixel 10 Pro/XL specifications page, accessed in 2026. Features and configurations can vary by market.

Camera Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Google Pixel 10 Pro XL What to consider
Main 200 MP, f/1.4 50 MP, f/1.68; 1/1.3-inch sensor Compare matched-frame samples for detail, exposure and color; resolution alone is not a quality score.
Ultrawide 50 MP, f/1.9 48 MP autofocus, f/1.7, 123° field of view; Macro Focus Pixel’s published autofocus macro feature matters for close-ups; inspect output in the lighting and framing you use.
Telephoto 10 MP 3x, f/2.4, plus 50 MP 5x, f/2.9 48 MP 5x, f/2.8, optical image stabilization Samsung has a dedicated intermediate 3x camera as well as 5x. Pixel’s listed rear telephoto is 5x.
Front camera 12 MP, f/2.2 42 MP autofocus, f/2.2, 103° field of view Pixel lists more resolution and a wide view, but skin tone, focus and useful detail depend on the result, not the spec sheet alone.

Samsung lists Nightography and camera/AI features; Google lists Pro controls, Camera Coach, Add Me, Night Sight, Astrophotography, Macro Focus, High-Res Portrait and editing tools. Feature names and availability can depend on software version and market, so check the current local product information if a particular feature is decisive. Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy S26 announcement and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro/XL specifications provide the manufacturer-listed details.

How do the zoom claims compare?

Zoom labels mix physical lenses with processing, so “100x” should not be read as 100x optical reach on either phone. Samsung describes 3x and 5x as optical zoom, 2x and 10x as optical-quality zoom, and digital zoom up to 100x. Google advertises Pro Zoom up to 100x and lists optical-quality zoom at selected steps from 0.5x through 10x, including 1x, 2x and 5x. Those optical-quality steps are not the same claim as a dedicated optical lens at every magnification. See the respective Samsung specifications announcement and Google specifications.

In Tom’s Guide’s disclosed shootout of more than 200 photos, the reviewer preferred Samsung’s texture at 10x. At 30x, Samsung’s processing smoothed texture but made sign text more legible in the example. At 100x, Pixel Pro Res Zoom looked sharper to that reviewer, but introduced an error in text. The publication’s overall observation was that Pixel looked better to the reviewer above 30x, while Samsung produced better unadulterated shots at lower zoom. These are judgments from that comparison, not guarantees across subjects or software versions. Tom’s Guide’s comparison shows the tested examples.

For distant signs, labels or other details where factual fidelity matters, treat heavily processed high-zoom output as an interpretation rather than documentary evidence. Check the original scene or another camera view instead of relying on AI-assisted detail to establish what small text says.

Which phone suits everyday stills and ultrawide photos?

The hardware specifications cannot settle color, contrast or exposure preferences. In Tom’s Guide’s tested city ultrawide image, both phones captured detail and even exposure; the reviewer preferred Samsung’s stronger contrast. In a flower comparison, the reviewer slightly preferred Samsung, describing Pixel’s reds and oranges as more saturated and Samsung’s exposure as closer to what the reviewer saw. That is a scene-specific impression, not a lab measurement of color accuracy.

Android Central offers a second reviewer’s perspective from carrying the S26 Ultra alongside several competitors, including the Pixel 10 Pro XL, and taking hundreds of photos in varied situations. Its author often found Samsung balanced in exposure, natural in color and detailed, while describing Pixel as often comparable in color and exposure but short of some fine detail in those comparisons. Neither publication describes a standardized blind test, so use the images as examples of rendering rather than a universal ranking. Read Tom’s Guide’s shootout and Android Central’s S26 Ultra camera observations alongside full-resolution samples where available.

Is the Pixel better for macro and close-ups?

Google specifically lists autofocus and Macro Focus on the Pixel 10 Pro XL’s ultrawide camera. That is a meaningful feature distinction if you often photograph small subjects. In Tom’s Guide’s close-up comparison, both phones captured detail; the reviewer noted Samsung smoothing some detail and more noise in Pixel’s image when enlarged, then preferred Samsung’s punchier look. Macro results can change with subject distance, light and enlargement, so compare sample images of subjects similar to yours rather than choosing from megapixels alone.

Which is stronger for portraits and moving subjects?

Portrait preference depends on how the phone renders depth, skin and edges. Tom’s Guide preferred Samsung’s apparent depth-of-field falloff and realism in the portrait it showed, while noting Pixel preserved slightly more fine detail. Android Central praised Samsung portraits of people and pets, but also reported shallow-depth-of-field scenes where Pixel handled the intended look better. These accounts point to variation by scene, not a settled portrait winner.

When comparing portraits, inspect hair and glasses edges, background blur, skin tone, fine detail and whether the subject was moving. The cited comparisons do not establish a controlled result for moving-subject capture, so do not assume one phone will always freeze action better based on its portrait rendering.

Which phone is better for selfies and panoramas?

Pixel’s listed 42 MP autofocus front camera has a 103° field of view; Samsung lists a 12 MP f/2.2 front camera. In the tested examples, Tom’s Guide preferred Pixel selfies for wider framing and sharper detail, while describing Samsung’s skin tone as good. The same reviewer preferred Pixel’s panorama for less blur and better exposure across the scene; Samsung’s moving-pan capture was more susceptible to blur in that example. These sample-based preferences align with Pixel’s wider published front-camera view, but do not guarantee the same result with every face, group, setting or software version.

How do they compare in low light?

Both phones brightened the dark scene in Tom’s Guide’s low-light comparison. The reviewer preferred Samsung for more even sky exposure and slightly stronger definition in that sample. This does not establish a general low-light advantage for indoor photos, moving subjects or video, which were not covered by that particular finding. Look for examples made in the kind of darkness you encounter and check whether the subjects remain sharp as well as bright.

How should you make the buying decision?

Choose based on the scenes and rendering you value, not a single aggregate score or megapixel comparison. Tom’s Guide called its overall margin narrow and selected Samsung in its shootout, but its category preferences varied and Android Central’s observations add further scene-dependent nuance.

  • For more optical framing choices: Samsung’s dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras provide distinct focal-length options; its 2x and 10x optical-quality claims add processed steps. Pixel offers a 5x telephoto and computational Pro Zoom, which appealed to Tom’s Guide’s reviewer at very high magnifications.
  • For group selfies and panoramas: Consider Pixel’s published 103° autofocus front camera and the reviewer’s preference for Pixel in the tested selfie and panorama examples.
  • For portraits of people or pets: Compare depth rendering, skin, edge handling and the intended look with actual subjects. The two reviewers found strengths in both phones, including variation in shallow-depth scenes.
  • For close-ups: Pixel’s listed autofocus ultrawide and Macro Focus are relevant; compare noise and detail at the distances you commonly shoot.
  • For night scenes: Samsung had the preference in the cited tested dark scene, but check comparable examples of your own subjects, especially if they move.
  • For faithful distant detail: Be cautious with very high zoom on either phone; the cited 100x Pixel example altered text, making it unsuitable as sole evidence for exact lettering.

For either phone, compare samples with the same framing and inspect the full-resolution files when possible. The cited reviewer preferences consider contrast, exposure, detail, noise and processing—not just the camera’s stated resolution.
