Buy the Galaxy S25+ for the better value; buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra only if you will use its superior camera system, built-in S Pen, larger storage options or premium hardware. Both U.S. unlocked phones share the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, 12GB of RAM, QHD+ 120Hz displays, 45W charging and Samsung’s seven-year update promise. Samsung’s current U.S. prices checked in August 2026 start at $999.99 for the 256GB S25+ and $1,299.99 for the 256GB S25 Ultra.

What the $300 Ultra premium buys
At Samsung’s listed prices, the Ultra premium pays for hardware rather than a faster software experience:
- A 200MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide and separate 5x telephoto.
- A built-in S Pen.
- A 6.9-inch display instead of 6.7 inches and a 5,000mAh battery instead of 4,900mAh.
- Titanium construction, Gorilla Armor 2 front glass and a 1TB storage option.
The S25+ retains the same processor, RAM, QHD+ resolution, adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, charging speed and update commitment. If you will not use the Ultra’s camera reach, stylus or extra storage, the S25+ is usually the rational purchase.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
- Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
- Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
- 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
- Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
Display and everyday comfort
Nearly identical sharpness
Both phones use QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and Samsung’s claimed 2,600-nit peak brightness. QHD+ parity means the Ultra is not sharper; it simply gives you about 0.2 inch more diagonal space. Peak brightness is a conditional specification, not a promise of that brightness across the entire screen. Actual results vary with content, display mode and ambient light; independent measurements have recorded lower figures under particular conditions (Tom’s Guide comparison).
Size, shape and handling
The S25+ is still a large phone, but its rounded corners, lower weight and less protruding camera assembly are easier for many hands. The Ultra is larger, heavier and more squared off. Its flatter shape provides a broad writing surface and a distinctive premium feel, while the S25+ is generally the more comfortable choice for prolonged one-handed use. A thick case can magnify this difference, so judge the complete cased phone rather than bare dimensions.
Titanium and Gorilla Armor 2 do not make the Ultra indestructible. Screen glass, rear glass, camera lenses, drop angle, case quality and repairability all affect real-world damage.

When the S25+ camera is enough
The S25+ covers 1x photos, occasional 3x portraits, family and pet pictures, travel snapshots and social media well. Its 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP 3x telephoto are a familiar flagship combination. Choose it when you rarely photograph distant subjects and do not need the most flexible Samsung camera hardware.
When the Ultra earns its price
The Ultra adds detail potential from its 200MP main sensor, a much higher-resolution ultrawide and a dedicated 5x optical telephoto. That combination is useful for concerts, sports, wildlife, travel details, architecture and subjects too far away for 3x. Samsung also lists 4K/120fps capture on the Ultra, which is not listed for the S25+ in the specification sheet. Third-party testing identifies the Ultra as the stronger Samsung camera phone, but processing preferences, motion, lighting and technique still affect individual shots.
What 100x really means
“100x Space Zoom” is not 100x optical zoom. Samsung lists 5x optical zoom for the Ultra; magnification beyond the native lenses uses computational and digital processing and can lose detail. The S25+’s 30x Space Zoom has the same limitation and starts with a narrower native camera range.

Performance, gaming and software
Both models use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy and 12GB of RAM. They are both suitable for demanding games, multitasking and Galaxy AI features. The Ultra’s larger body may help sustained workloads in some circumstances, but there is no evidence here to treat it as a separate performance tier. Do not buy the Ultra for speed alone; storage, cameras, stylus and design are the meaningful upgrades.
Both launched with Android 15 and One UI 7 and carry Samsung’s stated seven-year OS and security update promise. Galaxy AI availability is broadly shared, but features can depend on country, language, account, compatible app and internet access. Samsung’s launch material said basic Galaxy AI features were free through 2025; future terms for advanced services should be checked rather than assumed.
S Pen: useful tool, important limitation
The Ultra’s siloed S Pen supports handwritten notes, drawing, PDF and document markup, precise selections and detailed photo editing. It is compelling for people who can name recurring tasks for it. If you cannot identify at least two such uses, it should not alone justify $300.

The S25 Ultra S Pen omits Bluetooth. It therefore cannot perform the Bluetooth remote-shutter and Air Gestures associated with some earlier Ultra and Note models. Buyers upgrading specifically for camera-remote control should account for that limitation (Tom’s Guide comparison).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery, charging and wireless accessories
The Ultra’s 5,000mAh battery is only 100mAh larger than the S25+’s 4,900mAh unit. Samsung comparison material rates the S25+ for up to 30 hours of video playback, while independent endurance results vary by brightness, network, apps and test method. The Ultra may last longer in some tests, but the S25+ can offset its smaller battery by driving a slightly smaller panel. Neither result guarantees a particular number of hours for your routine.

Both support 45W wired charging, so the Ultra provides no charging-speed advantage. Neither U.S. purchase page includes a charger. Both support Qi2 wireless charging; magnetic alignment may require a compatible case or accessory because Qi2 support does not necessarily mean magnets are built into the handset.

- 512GB: Better for frequent photographers, travelers, gamers and multi-year ownership.
- 1TB Ultra: Intended for heavy 8K/video recording and very large offline libraries.
Preinstalled software reduces usable capacity, and inventory can differ by market or sales channel. The S25+ tops out at 512GB on Samsung’s U.S. page; the Ultra adds a 1TB tier.
Price, trade-ins and protection
Samsung’s observed U.S. unlocked prices in August 2026 are $999.99 (S25+ 256GB), $1,119.99 (S25+ 512GB), $1,299.99 (Ultra 256GB), $1,419.99 (Ultra 512GB) and $1,659.99 (Ultra 1TB). Recheck the live purchase pages before ordering. A trade-in, storage promotion or carrier bill credit can change the effective difference, but compare like with like: list price against list price, and show trade-in and delayed carrier credits separately.
Samsung trade-in credit depends on model, condition and functionality. Some cracked-screen devices qualify at reduced value; you must factory-reset and ship the old device under the program’s deadline. Samsung says a rejected device may be returned on request. Check current terms at Samsung Trade-In.
Samsung Care+ pricing is tied to device MSRP. The S25+ purchase page has displayed standard Care+ at $5 per month or $119 for two years, while the Ultra page has displayed $10 per month or $199 for two years; prices, deductibles, eligibility and coverage terms can change. Which Galaxy S25 should you buy?
Choose the Galaxy S25+
- You want the best balance of price, large-screen quality and comfort.
- You mostly shoot at 1x and 3x.
- You do not use a stylus.
- You want flagship gaming, AI and software support without paying for specialist hardware.
- You prefer to spend the $300 difference on storage, a case, insurance or another device.
Choose the Galaxy S25 Ultra
- You regularly need 5x or longer zoom, high-resolution ultrawide images or Samsung’s fullest camera system.
- You will use the S Pen for notes, drawing, editing or documents.
- You need 1TB of local storage.
- You prefer the largest, squared-off display and titanium construction.
- You accept a heavier, bulkier phone and higher protection costs.
Do not choose the Ultra for these reasons
- Speed alone: the processor and RAM are shared.
- Faster charging: both are rated at 45W.
- The assumption that 100x is optical detail.
- Bluetooth S Pen camera-remote features, which this generation lacks.
Do not choose the S25+ if you already know you need
- A built-in stylus.
- Frequent distant-subject photography.
- 1TB storage.
- 4K/120fps video as listed in Samsung’s specifications.
- The most capable Galaxy camera hardware available in this pair.
Bottom line
The Galaxy S25+ delivers the same core platform, sharp QHD+ display class, charging speed and long software support for $300 less at Samsung’s listed 256GB U.S. prices. It is the right buy for most people. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is worth the premium when its camera reach, S Pen, 1TB capacity, larger canvas or premium construction will be used regularly—not simply because it is the more expensive model.
