Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if it costs about the same as the S25 Ultra; choose the S25 Ultra if it is several hundred dollars cheaper and you do not need the newer camera hardware, Privacy Display, or faster charging. The S26 Ultra is the better new purchase, but for most people who already own an S25 Ultra, its improvements are not enough to justify paying close to full price to upgrade.
Galaxy S25 Ultra vs. S26 Ultra at a glance
These are both large-screen Ultra phones with an S Pen, 5,000mAh battery, and a 200MP main camera. The S26 Ultra’s meaningful changes are its integrated Privacy Display, faster wired charging, newer processor and cooling system, and camera lenses designed to admit more light. Its screen size and resolution, battery capacity, and general Ultra design remain familiar.

Prices above are US MSRP figures in Samsung’s March 2026 list, not guaranteed current sale prices. Samsung listed the S25 Ultra models as end-of-life in that list; that status does not mean the phone is unsupported. See Samsung’s US MSRP list. Price and availability: the discount decides the value
Samsung announced the S26 series on February 25, 2026, with general availability from March 11, 2026. Its US 256GB starting MSRP matches the S25 Ultra’s listed 256GB MSRP. The 512GB S26 costs more at list price, while the S25 is marked end-of-life in Samsung’s March price sheet. Samsung’s announcement gives the launch and availability details.

For a purchase, compare the price you will actually pay for the same storage tier, not just MSRP. Retailer inventory, trade-in credits, carrier financing, and refurbished condition can shift the gap substantially. If the two new phones are close in price, the S26’s newer hardware is the stronger buy. If a reputable seller offers an S25 Ultra for several hundred dollars less, that saving can outweigh the S26’s upgrades for routine use.
- Check whether a carrier offer requires a particular plan, activation, or multi-year financing.
- For refurbished or open-box S25 stock, confirm the warranty, return period, battery condition, cosmetic grade, and whether parts have been replaced.
- Do not assume end-of-life listing means the S25 is unusable or unsupported; it indicates a change in official stock status.
Design and display: similar footprint, one major new feature
Both phones have a 6.9-inch QHD+ display with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz. The S26 Ultra’s listed 2,600-nit peak brightness is a Samsung specification, not a guarantee of that brightness across the whole screen or in every use. Its thinner, lighter body is a modest change rather than a redesign: it is 0.3mm thinner and 4g lighter, but slightly taller and wider than the S25 Ultra.
What the Privacy Display does
The S26 Ultra’s built-in Privacy Display narrows viewing angles, making it harder for someone beside you to read the screen. Samsung says it can be used broadly or activated for situations such as entering a PIN or viewing notifications. That can be useful on public transport, at a café, or when checking work documents, messages, or banking details around other people. Samsung describes it as the first built-in Privacy Display on a mobile phone; that market-first statement is Samsung’s claim.
Recommended Free Tools
It is not complete privacy or security. Someone close to or directly behind you may still see the screen, and the display does not prevent screen recording, malware, account compromise, or every form of shoulder-surfing. Narrowed viewing angles can also be inconvenient when sharing a screen. Try it with text, maps, video, keyboard entry, and outdoor use; whether the effect is comfortable is personal, and reports of reduced clarity or brightness should not be treated as established for every user.

Comfort and accessories
The lighter body may help in the hand, but the S26 is wider as well as thinner, and a thinner phone is not automatically more comfortable for everyone. Camera housing can affect table stability and grip. Cases, screen protectors, and camera protectors should be specified for the exact model: the S26’s revised camera housing and body dimensions mean an S25 Ultra case may not fit correctly.
Cameras: the S26 targets low light, not a bigger main-camera number
Both phones use a 200MP main camera. The S26’s main camera has an f/1.4 lens versus f/1.7 on the S25 Ultra. Samsung says the S26 main lens captures 47% more light; it also says the S26’s 50MP 5x telephoto lens is 37% brighter than its predecessor. These are manufacturer claims about the lenses, not scores for overall photo quality. Samsung’s camera announcement explains those figures.
Main, ultrawide, and telephoto photos
The wider main-camera aperture should help the S26 gather more light in dim scenes, while image results still depend on sensor behavior, exposure, stabilization, subject movement, and image processing. A wider aperture does not guarantee a better photo in every situation, and it does not mean every night image is 47% better. The S26 retains a 50MP ultrawide resolution, so the comparison is more about newer hardware and processing than a jump in megapixels. Its brighter 5x telephoto is aimed at improving light capture at that zoom level; the number does not establish a universal quality advantage for every telephoto shot.
There is not enough controlled, side-by-side evidence here to quantify differences in indoor moving-subject shots, 3x photos, video stabilization, low-light video, or selfies. Samsung’s specifications and claims are useful for identifying hardware changes, but they do not replace testing with the same framing, lighting, focus, stabilization, and processing settings. For buyers who often photograph concerts, indoor events, or distant subjects at 5x, the S26’s camera changes are more relevant than for someone who mostly takes daytime snapshots.

Performance and gaming: newer silicon matters most under sustained load
The S26 Ultra uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and a larger vapor chamber, while the S25 Ultra has an earlier Galaxy-optimized Snapdragon flagship platform. Samsung describes improvements to CPU and GPU performance, ray tracing, and Vulkan optimization; those capability claims do not establish a fixed speed increase in every app.
For messaging, browsing, maps, and ordinary multitasking, both are flagship devices and the S25 remains a capable choice. The S26 is more compelling for long gaming sessions, emulation, video recording, photo processing, or on-device AI, where sustained performance and heat management matter more than a short benchmark. No controlled test result in the cited specifications establishes how much faster it stays after 20 or 30 minutes of a particular workload, so buyers should not treat a headline processor claim as a guaranteed frame-rate or battery-life improvement.
Battery and charging: same capacity, faster S26 top-ups
Both phones have a 5,000mAh battery, and Samsung gives each an “up to 31 hours” video-playback claim. Manufacturer playback figures are not equivalent to mixed-use endurance: brightness, network, gaming, camera recording, and other settings affect how long a phone lasts. The S26 may benefit from processor efficiency under demanding use, but the matched capacity and playback claim do not establish a general battery-life win.
The practical hardware change is wired charging: 60W on the S26 Ultra versus 45W on the S25 Ultra. Samsung says the S26 can reach about 75% in up to 30 minutes under its stated charging conditions. Maximum speed depends on a compatible charger and cable, battery level and temperature, and settings; charging also slows as the battery fills. Check whether a suitable charger is included before buying one separately. Wireless charging is slower than wired charging, and the S26’s faster wired rating does not make every top-up proportionally faster.

Tom’s Guide reports a 16-hour, 10-minute battery-test result for the S26 Ultra, but that result should only be compared with another phone tested under the same methodology and settings. Tom’s Guide’s Samsung phone ranking also lists its charging specifications. Battery-test figures from different publications can reflect different brightness, networks, and workloads.

The S26 Ultra launched with Android 16 and One UI 8.5; the S25 Ultra began in the Android 15 / One UI 7 era. The S26 therefore starts from a newer software generation and has a longer remaining support window, which can matter if you plan to keep a phone for years. Samsung’s comparison and support material describes changes to Galaxy AI and features such as Now Brief and Now Bar, but availability and behavior depend on software version, region, language, account, and sometimes internet access.
Do not assume every S26 feature is exclusive or that every new feature will work identically in every country. Before buying for a particular AI tool, check whether it is present on the relevant One UI version, whether it requires a Samsung account or network connection, and how its data is processed. Samsung’s Ireland support comparison outlines series differences, but feature availability may vary by region and software rollout.

Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you are buying new
- The S26 and S25 cost about the same at checkout.
- You frequently shoot in low light or use the 5x camera.
- You need faster wired top-ups or find a Privacy Display useful in public.
- You play demanding games or record video for long stretches.
- You want the newest software generation for a longer planned ownership period.
Buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra if the discount is substantial
- You mainly message, browse, stream, navigate, and take everyday photos.
- You do not need the Privacy Display or the S26’s camera and charging changes.
- You prefer the S25’s design or display behavior.
- You plan to replace the phone again within a year or two.
- You find a refurbished unit from a reputable seller with a meaningful warranty and a large enough saving.
Should an S25 Ultra owner upgrade?
Usually not at close to full price if the S25 is healthy and already meets your needs. Upgrade when the low-light or 5x camera is a recurring frustration, faster charging would change your routine, the Privacy Display addresses a real work or travel concern, or a strong trade-in makes the difference small. Battery degradation or physical damage may also change the calculation. If your phone is fast, your photos satisfy you, and you rarely use it in privacy-sensitive places, keeping it is the more sensible choice.
Best Value
- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
- Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
- Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
- 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
- Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
For S24 Ultra or older owners
The S26 Ultra is a more plausible upgrade from an older phone, especially if its battery, camera, or remaining software support has become limiting. The decision still depends on the trade-in and actual price; this comparison does not establish a specific performance or camera gain against every older model.
Check your break-even price
For an existing S25 owner, calculate the net upgrade cost as the S26 checkout price plus any required accessories, minus the trade-in or sale proceeds for the S25. If that net cost is close to the price of an S25 repair or the value you place on faster charging, camera improvements, and privacy, the upgrade may be worthwhile. If the net cost is high and none of those features solves a real problem, keep the S25. Trade-in offers can depend on condition, carrier, financing, and activation, so compare the terms rather than only the advertised credit.
Verdict
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the stronger phone and the safer choice when prices are similar. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the better value only when it is meaningfully cheaper and its older camera, charging, and privacy features are sufficient for your use. For most S25 Ultra owners, the S26 is an appealing refinement—not a must-have upgrade.
