For most new buyers, the Galaxy S24 is the better long-term choice; the Galaxy S23 is the better bargain when it costs substantially less. The S24 brings a brighter display, a newer U.S. processor, a slightly larger battery and—most importantly—Samsung’s longer software-support commitment. Its camera hardware and everyday experience are otherwise close to the S23’s. If you already own an S23 that works well, upgrading usually is not worth the cost unless you need a fresh battery or want the S24’s longer support runway.
Galaxy S24 vs. Galaxy S23 at a glance
This comparison covers the U.S. base models. The Galaxy S24 uses Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy in the U.S.; some international S24 models use Exynos 2400, so performance comparisons can differ by market.
| Feature | Galaxy S24 (U.S.) | Galaxy S23 (U.S.) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch year | 2024 | 2023 | The S24 starts with a newer support timeline. |
| Display | 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X, FHD+, adaptive 1–120Hz | 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X, FHD+, adaptive 48–120Hz | The S24 is slightly larger and can scale to a lower refresh rate. |
| Advertised peak brightness | Up to 2,600 nits | Up to 1,750 nits | The S24 is easier to read outdoors. Peak brightness is not sustained full-screen brightness. |
| Processor | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy | The S24 has newer performance hardware and more headroom for demanding tasks. |
| RAM | 8GB | 8GB | No base-model RAM advantage. |
| Storage | 128GB or 256GB | 128GB or 256GB | Neither has a microSD card slot. |
| Rear cameras | 50MP main with OIS, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom | 50MP main with OIS, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom | The core camera hardware is largely unchanged. |
| Front camera | 12MP | 12MP | Similar hardware. |
| Battery capacity | 4,000mAh | 3,900mAh | The S24 has a small capacity increase; this alone does not promise a major endurance gain. |
| Wired charging | 25W | 25W | No meaningful charging-speed upgrade. |
| Water resistance | IP68 | IP68 | Same stated rating for new devices. |
| Weight | About 167g | About 168g | The S24 is marginally lighter despite its larger display. |
| Announced software support | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates | Four OS upgrades and five years of security updates | The S24 has the clearest long-term advantage. Samsung’s policies do not mean every carrier model receives every update on the same date. |
Specifications are from Samsung’s S24-versus-S23 comparison, its U.S. S24 announcement and the S23 U.S. specification sheet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDisplay and design: the S24 is brighter, not dramatically bigger
The S24 adds just 0.1 inch of screen size, so the phones remain in the compact flagship class. The difference is more useful for reading or watching video than transformative in one-handed use. At about 167g, the S24 is also fractionally lighter than the S23, which is listed at about 168g.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
The more meaningful screen change is brightness: Samsung lists peak figures of up to 2,600 nits for the S24 and 1,750 nits for the S23. That can help with visibility in direct sunlight. These are peak figures under specified conditions, not a promise that the entire display sustains that brightness continuously. Indoors, both offer high-quality AMOLED viewing; the S24 is not a night-and-day improvement for ordinary browsing or video.
The refresh-rate range also differs. The S24 can adapt from 1Hz to 120Hz, while the S23’s stated range is 48Hz to 120Hz. That gives the newer panel more scope to lower refresh when content is static, but it does not change the basic feel of scrolling, which is smooth on both.
Performance: newer silicon matters more over time
In the U.S., the S24 has Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy and the S23 has Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. The newer chip offers higher peak CPU and GPU performance and more headroom for demanding games and future software. For messaging, browsing, social apps, streaming and routine photography, both phones are already fast; an S23 owner may not notice a compelling everyday difference.
The S24’s chip advantage is most relevant if you play demanding games or plan to keep the phone for years. Real-world performance and efficiency vary with workload, software and heat. Do not apply U.S. Snapdragon conclusions to every international S24: some markets received the Exynos 2400 version. Samsung’s comparison coverage discusses the regional distinction and general performance differences in its S24-versus-S23 comparison.

Battery life and charging: expect a modest advantage at most
The S24’s 4,000mAh battery is about 2.6% larger in capacity than the S23’s 3,900mAh battery. Newer processor efficiency and display or software optimization may also help the S24 last longer in some situations, but capacity figures alone cannot establish a dependable runtime difference. Signal strength, screen brightness, gaming, camera use, refresh rate and software version all affect endurance.
Both phones support 25W wired charging. If you are considering an upgrade mainly to charge faster, the S24 does not provide a meaningful reason to switch.
Cameras: similar hardware, with processing differences
The base models share the same broad camera setup: a 50MP optically stabilized main camera, a 12MP ultrawide, a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom and a 12MP front camera. The S24 is therefore not a wholesale camera-hardware upgrade.
Recommended Free Tools
Differences are more likely to come from image processing and software than from the lenses and sensors. Color, skin tones, night scenes, moving subjects, portrait separation and video stabilization can all be affected by processing, so a newer phone should not be assumed to win every photo. The 3x telephoto remains the relevant optical zoom on both, and neither model’s specification alone establishes a universal advantage for edge detail or motion handling.

The S24’s newer editing tools may appeal if you are comfortable with AI-assisted image changes. If you prefer edits that do not synthesize or alter image content, consider whether those features fit your workflow; the S23’s similar core camera hardware may be sufficient.
Galaxy AI: the S23 received features too
The S24 launched with Galaxy AI capabilities such as Circle to Search, Live Translate, Interpreter, Chat Assist, Note Assist and Generative Edit. The S23 later received many Galaxy AI features through software updates, so it is inaccurate to say the S23 has no Galaxy AI. Exact availability can depend on model, software version, language, region and account requirements.
Samsung positioned the S24 as its newer Galaxy AI platform, which may receive newer features or broader support first. AI tools can require an internet connection or account sign-in, and translations, summaries, search results and generated edits can be wrong. Samsung’s original launch announcement said supported Galaxy AI features would be provided free through the end of 2025; that date has passed, and the available official information here does not establish a definitive 2026 pricing policy. Check the current terms for the specific feature before buying on the assumption that it will remain free. See Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Galaxy AI announcement.

Software support: the strongest reason to choose the S24
Samsung announced seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the S24 series. The S23 U.S. specification sheet lists four OS upgrades and five years of security updates. These are stated support policies, not a guarantee that each update arrives simultaneously across unlocked, carrier-certified and regional models.
Rank #4
- Width: 2.78 inches; Length: 5.79 inches; Height: 0.30 inches
For a buyer keeping a phone for several years, the S24’s longer announced support window can matter more than a small speed or camera difference: it offers a longer period in which Samsung says the device will receive OS upgrades and security updates. The S23 is not thereby obsolete; it remains capable hardware, but its support commitment is shorter. Samsung’s policies are described in its S24 announcement and the S23 specification sheet.
2026 price and value: compare actual condition, not just the model name
Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed listings in the August 2026 pricing snapshot showed the S24 at $519, with 128GB and 256GB options listed; the S23 product page showed an unlocked 128GB model at $439 and a 256GB model at $469. These are snapshots, not fixed prices or a guarantee of stock. Samsung’s catalog and individual product pages showed inconsistent availability and pricing, so check the listing at purchase.
| Certified Re-Newed option | Snapshot price and configuration | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S24 | $519; 128GB and 256GB listed | The longer support window may justify the premium for a long-term buyer. |
| Galaxy S23 | $439 for unlocked 128GB; $469 for 256GB | A lower-cost option if the shorter support period is acceptable. |
| Galaxy S24 FE | From $489 | It has a larger display and Exynos 2400e, but is less compact and does not share exactly the base S24 camera hardware. |
| Galaxy S25 | $599 | At roughly $80 above the listed S24, it is worth checking before choosing the S24. |
Prices and storage availability above are from Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed catalog and its S23 product page. Samsung’s S24 product page is another place to verify current configuration and availability. A certified-refurbished price is not automatically a better value than a new or newer phone at a similar price.
As a buying rule—not a market-price report—favor the S24 if it is less than about $50 more than an equivalent S23; at a $50–$100 premium, it is usually the better long-term purchase unless the S23 has a substantially better condition or warranty. If the S24 costs more than about $150 extra, the S23 becomes more compelling for budget buyers. If the S24 price approaches a certified-renewed S25, compare the S25 before deciding.
Best Value
- 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.
Which phone should you buy?
Best for most new buyers: Galaxy S24
Choose the S24 if you want a compact Samsung flagship to keep for years, especially when the price premium is modest. Its brightest advantages are the longer announced support, outdoor screen visibility and newer processor—not a radically different camera or charging experience.
Best lower-cost flagship: Galaxy S23
Choose the S23 if it is at least roughly $100–$150 cheaper than an equivalent S24, or if you prefer its 6.1-inch screen and are comfortable with its shorter support commitment. It remains capable for everyday tasks.
Best choice for an S23 owner: keep the S23 in most cases
If your S23 performs well and its battery remains satisfactory, the S24’s improvements are incremental rather than transformational. An upgrade is easier to justify if battery deterioration is affecting your use, you need more remaining software support, or you specifically value the brighter display and newer features.

Compare battery terms, warranty, return window and exact model alongside price. A $50 saving is not worthwhile if it comes with an unclear battery condition or weak return protection. If a refurbished S24 is only modestly more than an equivalent S23, its longer support commitment generally makes it the stronger long-term choice.
Best for outdoor use or long ownership: Galaxy S24
The S24’s higher advertised peak brightness favors outdoor readability, and its announced support policy favors buyers who want to keep one phone longer. Neither advantage guarantees a particular real-world brightness level or update delivery date for every carrier variant.
Best for the smallest screen: Galaxy S23
The S23’s 6.1-inch display is marginally smaller than the S24’s 6.2-inch screen. Choose it if every bit of size matters, while recognizing that both remain compact compared with many large-screen phones.
Quick Recap
Check these details before buying refurbished
- Model and region: Confirm the exact model number and regional version. For an S24, verify whether it uses the processor expected for your market.
- Carrier compatibility: Confirm the phone is unlocked and supports the 5G bands and service of your intended U.S. carrier. Ask for the IMEI and verify it through the seller or carrier where possible.
- Battery condition: Look for a stated battery-health policy or replacement guarantee rather than assuming capacity is like new.
- Return and warranty terms: Check the return window, who provides the warranty, and what it covers.
- Water resistance: Do not assume a refurbished device still retains its factory IP68 water resistance; repairs or prior wear can affect seals.
- Seller and certification: Distinguish Samsung Certified Re-Newed from a marketplace device described only as refurbished.
- Storage: Consider 256GB if you keep 4K video, large games, offline media or a large photo library. Neither phone supports microSD expansion.
- AI availability: Confirm that the functions you care about support your language, region and device, and review current terms rather than relying on the original launch offer.
- Included items: Check whether a charger and other accessories are included instead of assuming they come with the phone.
