The Galaxy S25 is the better fit if you want a compact, lighter Samsung flagship with newer processing hardware and a longer remaining software-support runway. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is the better fit if you value a more versatile camera system, a larger sharper display, a bigger battery, more storage options, or a built-in S Pen.

This is not a like-for-like generation upgrade: the S25 is a standard flagship, while the S24 Ultra was the top-tier phone in its generation. For an S24 Ultra owner, moving to the S25 is usually a trade-down in hardware capabilities, not an overall upgrade—unless a smaller phone is the priority.

Is the Galaxy S25 an upgrade from the S24 Ultra?

Usually not. The S25 brings a newer processor and a smaller, lighter body, but it gives up several Ultra features: the larger QHD+ screen, 5,000mAh battery, dedicated 5x telephoto camera, built-in S Pen, and higher storage configurations. If you own an S24 Ultra, the S25 makes sense as a replacement mainly when the Ultra’s size and weight have become a problem.

The closer generational comparison is the S25 Ultra versus the S24 Ultra. The regular S25 is better understood as a newer compact flagship competing with an older, more fully equipped model.

Size and everyday handling

Galaxy S25: easier to carry and reach

At 162g, the S25 is substantially lighter than the S24 Ultra, which weighs about 232g. Its 6.2-inch screen and smaller body make one-handed use, pocket carry, and extended reading more comfortable for people who dislike large phones. The exact S25 dimensions are 146.9 × 70.5 × 7.2mm, according to Samsung’s reported device specifications.

Galaxy S24 Ultra: more room, more heft

The S24 Ultra’s larger rectangular body gives you more room for split-screen work, video, games, editing, and handwriting. That space is useful, but the extra size and weight can feel tiring during long one-handed sessions or in smaller pockets. A case can add bulk to either phone, so consider the finished size you are willing to carry.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra 5G, US Version, 512GB, Titanium Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.

Display: compact FHD+ or large QHD+

Both phones have Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. The S25 has a 6.2-inch FHD+ screen, with Samsung listing peak brightness of 2,600 nits. The S24 Ultra has a 6.8-inch QHD+ screen and an anti-reflective treatment noted as an advantage of that generation. Samsung’s S24 series launch material describes its display technology and design in its S24 series announcement.

The Ultra is the better screen for fine detail, large documents, video, games, and S Pen writing space. The S25’s FHD+ resolution is sufficient for most people at ordinary viewing distances; its advantage is that the screen is easier to reach and the phone is less bulky. Choose based on screen size and use, not on the assumption that the S25 is unusable because it is not QHD+.

Performance, gaming, and AI

Newer processor in the S25

The S25 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, while the S24 Ultra uses Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. The S25 is the newer platform and should be the choice if you prioritize current-generation processing hardware. Samsung says the S25 platform improves NPU performance by about 40%, CPU performance by 37%, and GPU performance by 30% versus the previous generation. Those are Samsung’s own comparison figures, not a guarantee of the same gains in every app or game. Samsung also says the S25 series has a vapor chamber up to 40% larger than the previous generation; that claim does not establish a universal sustained-temperature or frame-rate advantage.

For everyday use, the newer chip can improve responsiveness, but an S24 Ultra owner should not expect every routine task to feel dramatically different. For gaming, the S25 has newer silicon, while the S24 Ultra’s larger body may offer more physical room for heat dissipation. Without controlled, directly comparable temperature and frame-rate testing, there is no sound basis here to declare a sustained-gaming winner. Samsung’s processor and cooling claims appear in its S25 series announcement.

AI features are not a simple S25-only dividing line

The S25 launched with Android 15 and One UI 7 and was introduced with features including Now Brief, Gemini and Gemini Live integration, Audio Eraser, and Generative Edit improvements. The S24 Ultra has also received Galaxy AI capabilities through software updates, so do not assume every feature introduced with the S25 is permanently exclusive to it. Feature availability can depend on model, software version, country, account, and whether a task uses an internet connection or cloud processing. The more durable difference is that the S25 has newer processing hardware and a later software-support start date.

Cameras: the S24 Ultra has more reach

Camera hardware and zoom

The S25 has a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization, a 12MP ultra-wide, and a 10MP 3x telephoto. The S24 Ultra adds a 200MP main camera and a dedicated 50MP 5x telephoto alongside its 12MP ultra-wide and 10MP 3x telephoto. Samsung advertises up to 30x Space Zoom for the S25 and 100x for the S24 Ultra. Those maximum zoom labels describe advertised ranges, not a promise that the most extreme magnification will produce reliably usable detail.

The S24 Ultra’s dedicated 5x lens is the more meaningful difference for distant subjects. It gives you more flexibility for wildlife, sports, concerts, travel, and other scenes where moving closer is not possible. The S25’s 3x camera remains useful for portraits and moderate zoom. The higher 200MP main-camera figure does not mean every S24 Ultra photo will be sharper: lighting, subject distance, stabilization, processing, and the chosen lens all matter.

Everyday photos and video

The S25 can still be an excellent everyday camera phone for wide shots, portraits, and moderate zoom, and its smaller size is easier to carry. Newer image processing may help with HDR, noise reduction, skin tones, and low-light results, but that does not make it better in every scene. Both phones support 8K video capture according to the cited specifications; the S24 Ultra’s extra telephoto hardware makes its camera system more versatile overall. Do not confuse the S25 Ultra’s 50MP ultra-wide upgrade with the regular S25: that upgrade was announced for the Ultra model.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra 5G, US Version, 256GB, Titanium Violet - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.

Samsung’s S25 specification sheet and the S25–S24 Ultra comparison provide the cited camera specifications.

Battery life and charging

The S24 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery compared with 4,000mAh in the S25. That larger capacity makes the Ultra the more reassuring hardware choice for long travel days, navigation, gaming, video recording, hotspot use, and heavy camera use. It does not prove a specific screen-on-time advantage: battery life also depends on display size and resolution, processor efficiency, signal strength, brightness, and workload.

The S25’s newer chip, smaller screen, and lower resolution may help offset its smaller battery in some situations, but the available capacity figures alone cannot establish which phone lasts longer for every user. Charging speed is not the deciding difference established by these sources; verify the regional model’s specifications if charging behavior is central to your purchase.

S Pen and productivity

The S24 Ultra has a built-in S Pen; the standard S25 does not. The Ultra is the clear fit if you regularly handwrite notes, annotate documents, draw, make precise edits, use Samsung Notes, or rely on stylus shortcuts and remote camera functions. If you never use a stylus, the S Pen is not a reason by itself to carry the Ultra’s larger, heavier body. Samsung identifies the built-in S Pen as an Ultra feature on its Galaxy S25 Ultra product page.

Software support and remaining life

Samsung launched the S25 with Android 15 and One UI 7 and promised seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the S25 series. The S24 Ultra also launched under Samsung’s long-support policy, but its support clock began earlier. In 2026, the S25 therefore has a later starting point and more remaining runway, all else equal. Samsung’s S25 launch announcement gives the stated policy; check Samsung’s current regional support information for exact update timing and feature availability.

Price and value in 2026

Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP list gives the unlocked S25 a listed MSRP of $799.99 for 128GB and $859.99 for 256GB. Samsung announced the S25 at $799.99 at launch, with general availability beginning February 7, 2025. The current MSRP list does not include the S24 Ultra, so there is no established current Samsung MSRP to use for it; remaining-new stock, carrier inventory, used units, and refurbished units can have different prices and terms.

Compare like-for-like storage where possible. A 128GB S25 is not a storage-equivalent substitute for the S24 Ultra’s 256GB starting configuration. The 256GB S25 is a more defensible choice for long ownership, large game libraries, offline media, and frequent photo or video capture. If a verified-condition S24 Ultra is substantially cheaper than a new S25, it can offer more hardware per dollar; whether it is the better buy depends on its battery, screen, repair history, warranty, and return terms.

What to inspect before buying a used S24 Ultra

A lower asking price only matters if the phone’s condition and seller terms are acceptable. Before paying, check:

  • Battery condition and practical endurance; ask whether the battery has been replaced and whether there is documentation.
  • Display for burn-in, scratches, dead pixels, and wear to the anti-reflective coating.
  • S Pen presence and operation, including whether it pairs and charges correctly.
  • Camera lenses for scratches, and the USB-C port for damage or unreliable connections.
  • IMEI status, carrier lock, and compatibility with your carrier and regional network bands.
  • Repair history and water-resistance assumptions: a repaired phone should not automatically be treated as retaining its original water resistance.
  • Return window, warranty coverage, and whether the seller clearly identifies the exact storage and model.

Which phone should you buy?

Choose the Galaxy S25 if

  • You want a compact, light Samsung flagship that is comfortable for one-handed use.
  • You value newer processing hardware and a later software-support start.
  • Your photos are mostly everyday wide, portrait, and moderate-zoom shots.
  • You do not need a built-in S Pen, large screen, or long-range telephoto camera.
  • You are buying new and want a clear warranty and seller support.
  • You can choose 256GB at a price that works for you, especially if you keep phones for years or store lots of media.

Choose the Galaxy S24 Ultra if

  • You want the more versatile camera system, particularly its dedicated 5x telephoto.
  • You prefer a large QHD+ display for media, games, documents, or editing.
  • You use an S Pen or benefit from its built-in availability.
  • You value the larger battery and 256GB-or-higher storage options.
  • You find a well-documented used or refurbished unit with a meaningful warranty or return window at a substantial discount.

Keep the S24 Ultra rather than switching to the S25 if

Your reasons for switching are better camera capability, more battery capacity, an S Pen, or a bigger, sharper display. The S25’s processor is newer, but those Ultra features are not replaced by a chip upgrade.
