Short answer: The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the better phone overall, with a faster Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, lighter and flatter design, 50MP ultrawide camera, newer display glass and a longer support runway. The Galaxy S23 Ultra remains an excellent value when discounted, and its dedicated 10x optical camera and Bluetooth-enabled S Pen remote features are advantages the S25 Ultra does not fully replace. Existing S23 Ultra owners should upgrade for specific needs—not simply because the newer model has a higher number.

Who should buy which?
Choose the Galaxy S25 Ultra when
- You play demanding games, use emulators, edit video or run DeX heavily.
- You want a lighter, thinner phone with a flat screen.
- You frequently shoot ultrawide, macro or heavily cropped images.
- You want newer Galaxy AI functions and more remaining software support.
- Your trade-in or promotion makes the price difference modest.
Choose the Galaxy S23 Ultra when
- You can buy a certified-renewed unit for substantially less.
- Native 10x optical zoom matters more than a high-resolution 5x camera.
- You use the S Pen as a remote shutter, presentation controller or Air Actions device.
- Your current S23 remains fast enough and its battery is healthy.
- You want flagship cameras, QHD+ 120Hz and DeX at a lower cost.
Design and display
The S25 Ultra changes the feel of the phone more than its basic screen technology. Both use QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rates. The S25 has a nominal 6.9-inch display, although Samsung lists the rounded-corner usable area as 6.8 inches. Its flatter panel, reduced bezel and rounded corners are generally easier for typing, edge-to-edge gestures and precise S Pen work. The S23 Ultra’s curved Edge screen remains visually distinctive, but can produce reflections or accidental touches and requires different protectors.

At approximately 218g and 8.2mm, the S25 Ultra is about 16g lighter and 0.7mm thinner than the 234g, 8.9mm S23 Ultra. That is a meaningful reduction in a large phone, not a transformation into a compact device. The S25 uses a titanium frame and Gorilla Armor 2 glass; the S23 uses Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Newer glass and anti-reflective treatment improve the S25’s viewing and durability positioning, but neither phone is drop-proof. Cases and screen protectors are not interchangeable.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
- Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
- Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
- 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
- Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
Performance, gaming and productivity
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy still handles social apps, photography, multitasking and current games comfortably. The S25 Ultra’s Snapdragon 8 Elite is nevertheless the clear performance winner. Its extra headroom is most noticeable in high-end gaming, emulation, on-device AI, video editing and sustained DeX sessions. Web browsing will not feel twice as fast, and actual heat or throttling depends on the game, software build, case and ambient temperature.
RAM and storage combinations vary by market and capacity, so compare the exact model number rather than assuming every S25 Ultra has identical memory. Neither generation offers microSD expansion; choose 256GB, 512GB or 1TB according to your video and game library.
Camera comparison
Main camera
Both phones have a 200MP main camera, so the S25 is not a resolution upgrade. Samsung says its newer AI ProVisual Engine, image processing and 10-bit HDR video improve color, HDR, skin tones, night scenes, motion handling and editing. Those are Samsung’s platform claims; the visible advantage is most likely in difficult lighting and video rather than a dramatic change in bright daylight. See Samsung’s 2025 interim report for the stated camera changes.

Ultrawide and macro photography
The S23 Ultra’s 12MP ultrawide is replaced by a 50MP unit on the S25 Ultra. This is the clearest hardware improvement: landscapes, architecture, groups, close-ups and reframed crops can retain more detail. Four times the pixel count does not guarantee four times the quality; lens sharpness, autofocus, stabilization, light and processing still matter.

3x, 5x and 10x zoom
The S23 has dedicated 3x and 10x optical cameras. The S25 has dedicated 3x and 5x optical cameras, with the 5x module upgraded to 50MP. In good light at a distant subject, the S23’s native 10x lens can still be the better tool. At 5x and intermediate crop levels, the S25’s higher-resolution 5x sensor may produce cleaner, more flexible files. Beyond the optical focal lengths, both phones rely heavily on computational processing. “100x Space Zoom” is an advertised maximum, not evidence of 100x optical detail.
Video and editing
Both support 8K recording. The S25 adds newer processing and Samsung’s claimed 10-bit HDR video capabilities. Stabilization, microphone quality, camera switching and low-light results depend on the scene and software version. 8K and HDR files consume substantial storage, so capacity matters more for frequent video shooters. Samsung’s S25 announcement describes newer editing and AI features, including Audio Eraser: Samsung Galaxy S25 series announcement.
Battery life and charging
There is no capacity upgrade: both phones use 5,000mAh batteries and 45W wired charging. Samsung lists up to 31 hours of video playback for the S25 Ultra, but that is a manufacturer claim under specified conditions, not a guarantee of screen-on time. Newer silicon, display tuning and software may improve endurance in practice; cellular signal, brightness, 5G, gaming, navigation, camera use, temperature and always-on display can change results substantially.

If endurance is your only complaint, a battery replacement can cost less than replacing the phone. For a renewed S23, ask how battery condition is defined, what warranty applies and what return period you receive.
Rank #3
- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.

S Pen and productivity differences
Both phones store an S Pen inside the chassis for handwriting, notes, screenshots, drawing and precise control. The important difference is connectivity: the S23 Ultra’s pen supports Bluetooth remote functions and Air Actions, while the S25 Ultra’s included S Pen does not retain those features. Therefore, the S23 is the better choice for remote camera shutter use, presentation control and gesture shortcuts. Do not treat “S Pen included” as proof that the pens are functionally identical. Consult the S25 specification sheet for the listed hardware.
Galaxy AI, software and support
The S25 starts two Android generations newer: Android 15 with One UI 7 versus Android 13 with One UI 5.1 on the S23. Samsung introduced newer Galaxy AI experiences for the S25 generation, including Gemini integration, Gemini Live, Now Brief, Audio Eraser, enhanced editing and cross-app actions. Availability can depend on One UI version, Samsung or Google account, internet access, language, region and whether processing occurs on-device or in the cloud. Samsung can also change feature support or pricing.
The S23’s specification material lists four Android OS updates and five years of security updates. Because the S25 launched later on Android 15 and benefits from Samsung’s newer flagship policy, it has materially more remaining support. Exact final update dates vary by model, carrier and region; check Samsung’s support page for your model number rather than relying on a universal date.
Connectivity and extras
Both provide 5G, USB-C, DeX, Wireless PowerShare, Qi wireless charging and IP68 water and dust resistance. Band support, SIM and eSIM combinations, UWB and storage/RAM configurations can differ between unlocked, carrier and international variants. The S25 supports Qi2-style magnetic accessories through compatible cases or accessories in relevant markets; that should not be assumed to mean magnets are built into every phone. Verify carrier certification and bands before importing a device.

Camera-first buyers
Choose the S25 for ultrawide, macro, newer processing and HDR video. Choose the S23 when native 10x optical reach is central to your photography. Neither phone’s 100x label should decide the purchase.
S Pen and productivity users
Choose the S23 if Bluetooth remote shutter or Air Actions are essential. Choose the S25 if handwriting, drawing, DeX and precision input are enough and you prefer its flatter screen.
Gamers and heavy power users
The S25’s Snapdragon 8 Elite gives more performance headroom for demanding games, emulation, editing and AI. The S23 remains fast for ordinary use and mainstream gaming.

Final verdict
Buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra for the best overall hardware in this comparison: faster performance, a thinner and lighter build, flatter display, stronger ultrawide camera, newer glass and a longer software runway. Buy the Galaxy S23 Ultra when it is substantially cheaper, you value native 10x optical zoom or you rely on S Pen Bluetooth controls. Do not upgrade solely for the 200MP main camera, 5,000mAh battery, 45W charging, 100x branding or the presence of an S Pen—those headline features do not materially change between generations.
