The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is water-resistant, not waterproof in every situation. Samsung rates it IP68 based on a test in still freshwater up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes; the company does not advise using it at the beach or pool. The rating describes specific test conditions, not a guarantee against every kind of water exposure.
What the S23 FE’s IP68 rating covers
Samsung’s product page says the Galaxy S23 FE is rated IP68 and describes a laboratory submersion test in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. Its user manual adds that the test used still freshwater at 15–35 °C and 86–106 kPa, under IEC 60529 conditions. These are the stated limits of the test, not a promise that the phone will survive every immersion. Samsung’s S23 FE product page and the Galaxy S23 FE user manual give the relevant qualifications.
Samsung’s 2023 announcement also describes the IP68 test as submersion in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. That does not establish performance in salt water, chlorinated water, water under pressure, or beyond the stated depth and duration. Samsung Global Newsroom’s announcement gives the same core test limits.

Samsung explicitly says the S23 FE is not advised for beach or pool use. Its manual says not to expose the phone to swimming-pool water or sea water. An IP68 rating does not certify the phone for those environments, nor does it establish safety in moving or forceful water. Samsung warns that a sudden rise in water pressure may exceed the device’s guaranteed resistance level.

- Freshwater: The rating applies to the specified still-freshwater laboratory test.
- Pool or sea water: Samsung advises against these exposures; the stated test does not cover chlorinated or salt water.
- Forceful or moving water: The manual warns that increased water pressure can exceed the guaranteed resistance level.
- Deeper or longer submersion: Samsung’s stated test does not cover exposure beyond 1.5 meters or 30 minutes.
- Heat and steam: Samsung warns that temperature changes in a sauna or steam room can damage water-resistant performance.
Samsung does not publish comparative S23 FE test results for these other conditions, so they are boundaries and cautions—not quantified predictions of whether a particular phone will fail.
Water resistance can weaken over time
Samsung says water and dust resistance is not permanent and may diminish through normal wear. Its manual also warns that external shock or physical damage can reduce resistance. The IP68 rating therefore should not be treated as a lasting guarantee, particularly for a phone that has been dropped, damaged, or used for a long time.

What to do if the phone gets wet
- Wipe and dry it. Use a soft, clean cloth and dry the phone thoroughly, following Samsung’s guidance.
- Keep the USB-C port disconnected. Do not connect a charger or accessories until the multipurpose jack is completely dry.
- Rinse certain contaminants with still fresh water. If exposed to unclean water or liquids such as soapy water, oil, perfume, sunscreen, hand cleaner, cosmetics, or alcohol-containing liquids, Samsung’s manual says to clean the device with still fresh water, wipe it with a soft, clean cloth, and dry it thoroughly.
- Check sound and touch behavior. A wet speaker or microphone may affect sound clarity, and the touchscreen or other features may not work properly while the phone is being used in water.
Do the materials make it waterproof?
No. Samsung lists Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back and a metal frame, but those materials do not expand the IP68 test conditions or make the device waterproof. Samsung’s product page also clarifies that the camera glass and certain buttons and the SIM tray are excluded from those material descriptions.
Should you take an S23 FE into water?
Do not treat the S23 FE as a pool, beach, or underwater-use phone. Its IP68 rating is useful context for the specific freshwater test Samsung describes, but it is not assurance for other water types, forceful exposure, longer or deeper submersion, or a worn or damaged device. An optional compatible case or waterproof pouch may add a separate layer of protection, but it does not change the phone’s rating; check the accessory’s own claims and compatibility.
