Android 13, paired with Samsung’s One UI 5.0, rolled out to US Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra phones in stages during November and December 2022. Carrier models started first, while Samsung’s US unlocked models followed later; the rollout was not a same-day release for every device. This is a historical update report, not a notice that Android 13 is newly available in 2026.
Which Galaxy S21 models received the US update?
The initial US rollout covered the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra. The Galaxy S21 FE is a separate model with its own firmware schedule, so it should not be assumed to have followed the same rollout dates. Samsung listed the S21 FE separately in its upgrade policy announcement: Samsung’s 2022 Galaxy OS upgrade announcement.
Android is the underlying operating system; One UI is Samsung’s interface and software layer. In this release, Android 13 came with One UI 5.0. A phone may have received the same Android version through a different firmware channel depending on whether it was carrier-branded or factory-unlocked.
When did Android 13 reach US Galaxy S21 phones?
These are reported rollout milestones, not guaranteed dates for every individual phone. Samsung and carriers distribute firmware in stages, and model and software configuration can affect when an update appears.

The “G99x” build prefix represents the S21 family in these reported examples; it is not a promise that every model or later Android 13 build used the same full identifier. Notably, the later unlocked rollout was reported with an October patch, while the earlier carrier release had a November patch.
Android 13 began reaching some S21 devices internationally before the US carrier rollout, but an international release date does not establish US availability. Samsung maintains separate firmware records by model and market; for example, its international SM-G991B record is distinct from the US SM-G991U record.

What changed with One UI 5?
Samsung described One UI 5 as a personalization and usability update. Its overview highlights refreshed app icons and illustrations, stronger visual contrast, smoother transitions, more customization options, and expanded communication and notification controls. See Samsung’s One UI 5 overview.

How to check for the update
- Open Settings on the phone.
- Tap Software update.
- Tap Download and install and let the phone check for available software.
- If an update is offered, review its details and follow the on-screen option to install it.
Samsung’s current support instructions use this same route: Settings → Software update → Download and install. Menu wording may vary slightly with software version. For a major update, back up important data, make sure there is enough free storage, and keep the phone charged or connected to power and reliable Wi-Fi.
What to do if Android 13 does not appear
- Check the exact model at Settings → About phone. The S21 FE and international models should not be treated as the same firmware variant as the US S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra.
- Identify whether the phone uses carrier-branded or factory-unlocked firmware. A SIM-unlocked phone does not necessarily use Samsung’s unlocked-US firmware channel.
- Install any pending software update, restart the phone, then check again using Settings → Software update → Download and install.
- If the device was recently moved to another carrier, ask the active carrier about the update for that model and firmware configuration. Swapping a SIM card alone does not necessarily force an update.
- If the phone remains on an unexpectedly old build, contact Samsung support or the carrier. Avoid installing firmware intended for a different model: incompatible flashing can cause data loss and other device problems.
A missing notification during the first reports did not by itself mean a phone was unsupported. Carrier certification and separate firmware channels meant that availability could differ across otherwise similar S21 devices.

One UI 5.1 came later
One UI 5.0 was the interface version in the initial Android 13 rollout. One UI 5.1 arrived later as another Android 13-based update; Samsung’s US firmware record for model SM-G991U lists a February 27, 2023 release entry for One UI 5.1. That later release should not be confused with the original One UI 5.0 rollout: Samsung’s SM-G991U firmware record.
What this means for S21 owners now
The dates and builds above document a rollout completed in 2022; they do not establish the phone’s present update status. Samsung’s current software-update support page covers current update guidance. Samsung’s 2022 policy announced up to four generations of Android/One UI upgrades and up to five years of security updates for selected devices, including the S21 family. The five-year figure referred to security updates, not five Android-version upgrades: Samsung’s policy announcement.
