Switching the cable that came with a Samsung Galaxy may help if that cable is damaged or incompatible, but one cooler charging session does not prove the cable caused the heat. Some warmth is normal; excessive heat calls for stopping the charge, letting the phone cool, and checking the cable, charger, and port before trying again.
Why can a Samsung Galaxy get hot while charging?
A phone and its adapter can feel warm during charging. Samsung says that if the device temperature becomes too high, charging may temporarily stop or slow down. Heat is not automatically evidence of a fault, but a phone that feels excessively hot should not be left plugged in.
A cable is one possible factor. Samsung identifies damaged or incompatible cables as potential contributors to charging problems and heat around the charging port. Damage near the plug or port can matter, but heat can also have other causes, including demanding apps running during charging, a hot environment, debris in the port, or a damaged port.
In one person’s experience, changing the included cable and then noticing less heat is a useful troubleshooting clue—not proof that every Galaxy’s supplied cable is defective, or that a replacement will solve every overheating problem.

What to do if your phone gets excessively hot
- Disconnect it. Unplug the cable if the phone feels excessively hot. Samsung advises that a damaged power cable or charging port may overheat. Samsung UK charging tips.
- Let the phone cool naturally. Close demanding apps and wait until the device has cooled before charging again. Do not keep testing a cable that is visibly damaged.
- Inspect the cable and plug. Look for fraying, bent or damaged connectors, or other visible wear. Replace a damaged cable with one compatible with your phone and charger.
- Check the charging setup. Confirm that both the cable and adapter support the charging mode intended for your Galaxy. Similar-looking accessories can perform differently, and not every Galaxy supports the same charging configuration.
- Check the port and other conditions. Look for debris or visible damage at the charging port, and consider whether the phone is running demanding apps or charging in a hot environment.
- Get help if it continues. If heat or charging trouble persists with a compatible, undamaged cable, contact Samsung service for an inspection rather than assuming the cable is the only cause.
How to choose a compatible USB-C cable
Start with the exact Galaxy model and charger, then check connector fit, the cable’s current rating, and support for the charging mode you intend to use. Samsung’s published examples show why a cable rating should not be applied universally:

These ratings are technical examples from Samsung US charging guidance, not universal cable requirements. A higher amp rating is not a guarantee against heat: it may affect compatibility or charging speed, while port damage, cable condition, and other causes need separate attention. When a cable change does not fix the problem
If the phone still becomes excessively hot or charging remains unreliable after you switch to a compatible, undamaged cable, stop treating the cable as the sole explanation. A contaminated or damaged charging port, adapter, phone workload, or surrounding temperature may be involved. Avoid inserting objects into the port; if debris or damage is apparent, or the problem persists, arrange service through Samsung.
