If your Galaxy asks for a Google account after a factory reset, it is enforcing Factory Reset Protection (FRP), which Samsung calls Google Device Protection in its consumer guidance. The supported ways to regain access are to recover the Google account previously used on the device or, if that fails, contact Samsung-authorized service with proof of purchase. A bypass is not the same as legitimate account recovery and can undermine an anti-theft safeguard.
Why a Samsung FRP lock appears after a reset
Samsung says Google Device Protection turns on automatically when a Google account is added and a screen lock is set. If the phone is reset in an unauthorized way, it may ask for the username and password of the last Google account used on it. Entering a different account will not satisfy that check. A reset from the Recovery menu can prompt this verification. That is why a phone can appear to have reset successfully but still be unusable until the previously associated account is verified.

How to recover a Galaxy phone locked by Google account verification
Recover the Google account first
- Use Google’s Account Recovery process to recover the account or reset its password. Google may ask questions to confirm that you own the account.
- Use the recovered account credentials on the Galaxy when prompted. The account must be the one previously used on that device.
- If you changed the password, allow for Samsung’s stated delay: its UK support guidance says a new Google password may take 24 hours or longer to work for unlocking the phone. Google cautions that its recovery process is the route to use and that it does not work with third-party services claiming to provide account or password support. Avoid sharing account credentials with anyone offering to recover them outside Google’s process.

If you cannot recover the account
Samsung advises taking the device and proof of purchase to an authorized Samsung Service Centre. Confirm the appropriate service route and requirements with Samsung in your region; service availability and terms can vary. A receipt or other purchase record can help establish ownership, but it does not replace the device’s account-verification process by itself.

If the Galaxy belongs to an employer or another organization, contact its IT administrator or device-management provider instead of treating it as an ordinary personal-account recovery case.

How to avoid FRP when resetting or transferring your phone
If you can still use the device and plan to sell, give away, or reset it, remove your Google account before the reset. Samsung distinguishes a reset performed through the phone’s Settings from one performed through Recovery: its guidance says a Settings reset is the route to avoid triggering Google Device Protection, while a Recovery reset can require the previous Google account. Menu wording differs among software versions, so follow the instructions for your model and software rather than relying on one universal click path. - Back up information you want to keep. Samsung warns that personal information may not be recoverable after a reset.
- In the device’s Settings, use the account-management controls to remove the Google account. Check the on-screen instructions for your particular Galaxy model and software version.
- Start the factory reset from Settings when preparing the phone for its next owner, rather than using the Recovery menu.
- Before handing the phone over, complete setup as appropriate to confirm it is ready for the next user.
Personal FRP and enterprise-managed devices are different
On a managed Galaxy, FRP can be controlled by an administrator policy rather than only by the owner’s personal Google account. Samsung Knox documentation says the allowed accounts and policy must be configured before the device is reset. Knox Mobile Enrollment’s 25.11 release notes, last updated November 19, 2025, state that it does not support FRP bypass on devices running Android 15 or later, aligning with Google’s updated policies. What “bypass FRP” means—and why unofficial methods carry risk
FRP is intended to stop unauthorized use after a reset. Defeating its account check can undermine that safeguard, including when a device is lost or stolen. This article does not provide instructions for bypassing it: for an owner, account recovery and authorized service are the appropriate routes.

Unofficial unlock tools may involve modified or rooted Android software. Google warns that modified or rooted versions can lose some protections, miss automatic security updates, and allow unapproved apps broad access to device data. That warning does not establish that every tool is malicious or that every attempt will damage a phone; it does mean such methods should not be treated as risk-free.
