The Samsung Chromebook Pro did not use the RK3399. Samsung’s launch specifications list an Intel Core m3-6Y30 in the Pro; the Samsung Chromebook Plus is the model associated with the RK3399-based OP1 processor. A 2016 article reported a fast score from an RK3399 development board, then estimated how a future Pro might score. That estimate was not a benchmark of the Pro.
Which Samsung Chromebook used the RK3399?
Samsung’s January 2017 launch announcement distinguishes the two models: the Chromebook Pro XE510C24 had an Intel Core m3-6Y30, while the Chromebook Plus XE513C24 used OP1, described as a hexa-core processor with two A72 cores and four A53 cores. Chromium’s ChromeOS device reference identifies the Samsung Chromebook Plus platform, codenamed Kevin, as an ARM/aarch64 device using RK3399. These sources connect the RK3399 story to the Plus, not the Pro.
The confusion appears in the original headline, which named the Chromebook Pro. Its article disclosed that it had not benchmarked a Pro. It instead used footage of an RK3399 reference or development board and speculated about the unreleased Pro’s possible performance.
What the 2016 benchmark article actually reported
Chrome Unboxed’s December 20, 2016 article reported an Antutu score of 75,000 appearing in video of an RK3399 board. That is a board result as reported by the article, not a measured Chromebook Plus or Chromebook Pro result.

To estimate Octane performance, the author compared Antutu and Octane figures cited for four older ARM Chromebooks:
| Device cited by Chrome Unboxed | Antutu score | Octane score |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Series 3 | 13,500 | 5,800 |
| Acer Chromebook 13 | 43,500 | 7,600 |
| Samsung Chromebook 2 | 36,500 | 7,100 |
| ASUS Chromebook Flip | 36,500 | 7,400 |
Several comparisons sat near a rough one-fifth relationship between Antutu and Octane, though the article noted exceptions. Applying that rough relationship to the board’s Antutu score, the author forecast an Octane result of 14,000–15,000 for the anticipated Chromebook Pro. Robby Payne described this as an inference: “it stands to reason” the Pro could reach that range. It was a forecast, not a score obtained on the Pro.

The article does not establish standardized benchmark environments, software versions, thermal conditions, or workloads across those devices. Its figures are a small historical comparison, not a controlled cross-device test or a general rule for processor performance.
How fast was the Chromebook Pro in actual use?
Samsung’s official specification for the Pro’s Core m3-6Y30 lists a 0.90 GHz base frequency, up to 2.20 GHz, and 4 MB of L3 cache. Those specifications identify the chip but do not translate directly into a comparable Octane result.

In a February 2017 review, TIME’s reviewer found the Core m3 Pro capable for simple tasks and reported keeping about 25 Chrome tabs open. The reviewer also found limits when running demanding Android games with those tabs still open, and reported about seven hours of battery life in a mixed-use test. These are observations from one reviewer’s use, not a standardized benchmark or a universal battery-life result.
Quick Recap
What to take away from the headline
- The Chromebook Pro’s processor was Intel Core m3-6Y30, not RK3399.
- The Samsung Chromebook Plus XE513C24 is the Samsung model associated with OP1 and the RK3399 platform.
- The 75,000 Antutu figure was reported for an RK3399 board; the 14,000–15,000 Octane figure was an estimate for the anticipated Pro, not a measured result.
- For practical Pro performance, TIME’s review offers a limited real-use snapshot rather than a controlled benchmark comparison.
