Samsung announced on January 18, 2018, that it had begun mass production of 16Gb GDDR6 memory chips—16 gigabits, or 2GB per chip, not 16GB. The company listed AI systems among the technology’s potential applications, but it did not publish an AI-training benchmark showing that the memory accelerated training.

What Samsung announced

Samsung Electronics said it had started mass production of 16-gigabit GDDR6 for advanced graphics systems. The announcement concerned the capacity of each memory chip, not the total memory in a graphics card or computer. A card’s total capacity would depend on how many chips it uses and its overall design.

The distinction between the units matters: lowercase b means bits, while uppercase B means bytes. Eight bits make one byte, so a 16Gb chip holds 2GB.

What the 2018 chip was rated for

Samsung reported these specifications for the 2018 part:

Specification Samsung’s stated figure
Capacity per chip 16Gb, or 2GB
Pin speed 18Gbps
Data transfers 72GBps
Operating voltage 1.35V
Process description 10nm-class

Samsung used “10nm-class” for a process technology node somewhere between 10 and 19 nanometers; it did not specify an exact 10nm node. These are company-reported product figures, not independent measurements. Samsung’s January 18, 2018 announcement contains the specifications and its comparison with an earlier GDDR5 chip.

How Samsung compared it with GDDR5

Samsung compared the 16Gb GDDR6 chip with its own 20nm 8Gb GDDR5. The company claimed twice the chip density, more than twice the pin speed, about 35% lower energy consumption, and about 30% higher manufacturing productivity. It also gave 1.55V as the GDDR5 reference voltage, compared with 1.35V for the GDDR6 part.

msi Gaming RTX 3050 Ventus 2X 6G OC Graphics Card (NVIDIA RTX 3050, 96-Bit, Boost Clock: 1492 MHz, 6GB GDDR6 14 Gbps, HDMI/DP, Ampere Architecture)
  • Chipset: GeForce RTX 3050
  • Boost Clock / Memory: 1492 MHz / 14 Gbps
  • Video Memory: 6GB GDDR6
  • Memory Interface: 96-bit
  • Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.1a x 2

Those comparisons apply to the specific products Samsung cited. They do not establish that every GDDR6 chip uses 35% less energy than every GDDR5 chip, or that a graphics card’s overall performance improves by the same amount. Memory specifications alone do not determine a system’s performance.

What the announcement said about AI training

Samsung named AI systems as one possible application, alongside graphics cards, gaming devices, automotive and network systems, 8K video, virtual reality, and augmented reality. The announcement did not isolate AI training as a tested use case, quantify a training-speed improvement, or show a benchmark comparing systems with and without the memory.

  • Next‑Gen AMD RDNA 4 Architecture: Powered by the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT GPU with 32 Compute Units featuring 3rd Gen Ray Tracing and 2nd Gen AI Accelerators, delivering exceptional 1440p gaming and AI‑enhanced performance.
  • Blazing‑Fast Engine Clock: Delivers a boost clock of up to 3290 MHz and a game clock of 2700 MHz out of the box, providing the raw power for smooth, high‑framerate gameplay.
  • 16GB GDDR6 Memory on 128‑Bit Bus: Equipped with 16GB of high‑speed GDDR6 memory running at 20 Gbps, offering ample capacity and bandwidth for modern game textures and creative applications.

Higher memory data rates can be relevant to graphics and compute workloads, but the 2018 announcement supports only a potential-application claim—not a measured claim that this chip accelerated AI training. Samsung’s GDDR6 product overview describes the memory family, but does not provide an AI-training result for this 2018 part.

How the 2018 milestone differs from Samsung’s later announcement

In July 2022, Samsung announced a different 16Gb GDDR6 part rated at 24Gbps and said it was beginning sampling. That was a sampling milestone for a later part, not the 2018 product’s speed and not a second description of the earlier mass-production announcement. Samsung’s 2022 announcement describes that later chip.
