Samsung Galaxy phones include built-in protections, so most people should start with the tools already on the phone rather than immediately installing another antivirus app. Samsung says Google Play Protect is enabled by default; Auto Blocker can stop certain unauthorized app installations and other risks on supported devices; and Device care offers scanning and diagnostics. These protections reduce some risks, but they do not make a phone immune, and the available controls vary by model, software version, and region.
Does a Samsung phone need an antivirus app?
Not necessarily. A Galaxy phone already has several security features, including Google Play Protect, which Samsung says is built in and turned on by default. Auto Blocker and Device care add other protections on supported phones. Start by checking and using these built-in features. The sources cited here do not establish that every Galaxy model has identical tools, or that a separate antivirus app is required for every user.
The built-in features address different risks rather than acting as one all-purpose scanner. Play Protect checks apps; Auto Blocker can restrict installations from unauthorized sources and block certain USB commands and suspicious image payloads in supported messaging apps; Device care can help investigate suspicious apps. Samsung says the antivirus solution used within App protection can vary by region.

How to check the built-in protections
Review Google Play Protect
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then tap Play Protect.
- Open Play Protect settings and check that app scanning is enabled. Samsung recommends leaving it on. Samsung support
Check Auto Blocker
- Open Settings → Security and privacy → Auto Blocker.
- Review the options shown on your phone and enable the protection if it suits how you use the device. Auto Blocker blocks apps from unauthorized sources while allowing apps from sources such as Galaxy Store and Google Play Store.
Auto Blocker may also block sideloaded apps or some work-app installations. If you need an app that is not available through an official store, verify its source before changing a protection setting. Samsung describes Auto Blocker’s functions and possible restrictions in its support guide and Knox documentation.

Decide whether to use Maximum restrictions
Maximum restrictions are optional, not a necessary setting for every user. They add controls beyond blocking unauthorized app installations, but can interfere with features or app use. Review Samsung’s description of the restrictions before enabling them.
How to scan a Samsung phone for suspicious apps
If unwanted ads, slowness, or freezes begin after installing a third-party app, Samsung recommends checking for suspicious or unauthorized apps. Those symptoms do not prove that the phone has a virus: an app may show fake security warnings to persuade you to install more software.

- Connect to Wi-Fi and restart the phone first. Samsung says these steps help make Device care diagnostics more accurate.
- Check for Device care notifications and review apps listed in deep sleep.
- If available, open Settings → Device care → Diagnostics → App safety Diagnostics and run the check.
- Review any apps flagged as suspicious and uninstall ones you do not trust or recognize.
- If no alert appears, manually review installed apps in Settings and remove suspicious or unauthorized apps.
Samsung’s Device care troubleshooting guide provides its current instructions. If the labels differ on your phone, search for “Device care,” “Diagnostics,” or “App safety” in Settings.
Why protections and menu names differ
Samsung Knox lists Auto Blocker for Galaxy devices running One UI 6.0 (Android 14) or later. Samsung’s support page, updated July 22, 2026, says One UI 6.1.1 added Maximum restrictions and notes that menu names and layouts can vary by model and software version. Samsung also says the specific antivirus solution used by App protection varies by region. Do not assume your phone has a particular provider or the same controls shown on another Galaxy device.

If you cannot find a setting, use the search box in Settings. You can also check your phone’s software version to understand whether a feature’s stated requirements apply.
Habits that reduce risk
- Prefer apps from recognized official stores, such as Google Play Store or Galaxy Store.
- Keep the phone’s software current.
- Be cautious with unexpected app-install prompts, especially if they ask you to install an app from outside an official store.
- Do not treat a pop-up warning as proof that your phone is infected; it may be an attempt to get you to install another app.
Auto Blocker can restrict unauthorized-source installations, but that may affect legitimate sideloaded or work apps. Verify an app’s source before deciding whether to change the setting.

Do you need a USB data blocker?
Only consider one for the narrow case of charging from a USB connection you do not trust. Samsung documents that Auto Blocker blocks commands over USB and describes malicious chargers or connected devices as a threat scenario. A USB data blocker is not antivirus software: it does not scan the phone or remove malware, and no specific model is established here as tested or Samsung-endorsed.
