First find out where the 990 PRO disappears: BIOS/UEFI, Windows, or Samsung Magician. A drive missing from firmware setup needs a different response from one Windows detects but has not set up as a volume, or one that Magician alone cannot see.

Identify which layer cannot see the drive

Check BIOS/UEFI, Windows Device Manager, Windows Disk Management, and Samsung Magician. Note the exact 990 PRO model and capacity, your computer or motherboard model, operating system, whether the drive is new or holds data you need, and its firmware version if available.

Where it appears What that suggests Next step
Nowhere, including BIOS/UEFI Possible seating, slot compatibility, BIOS setting or firmware, or drive/slot fault. Check the system manual, M.2 connection, supported slot, and BIOS settings.
BIOS/UEFI, but not Windows The hardware is visible to firmware; Windows device enumeration or storage presentation needs investigation. Check Device Manager, then Disk Management.
Windows, but not Magician The utility may not be recognizing the drive or its controller presentation. Refresh or restart Magician and check Windows detection and controller/port conditions.
Windows Disk Management, but no usable volume The disk may lack a partition or drive volume; it is not necessarily a failed SSD. Determine whether it contains needed data before any initialization or formatting.

These are distinct checks: Device Manager concerns whether Windows enumerates a device, while Disk Management shows disks and their partitions or volumes. Samsung’s Internal SSD Troubleshooting FAQ notes that a disk without a defined partition may not appear as a usable Windows disk.

If the 990 PRO is missing from BIOS or UEFI

Samsung recommends checking the SSD connection, BIOS settings or slots, and motherboard BIOS when an SSD is not recognized. Its FAQ cautions: “If the BIOS of the motherboard is outdated, the PC may not support the SSD.” The FAQ is general; it does not provide a universal slot map or BIOS menu sequence.

  1. Shut down the computer and disconnect power as appropriate for the device. Follow its service manual before opening it; laptop disassembly may require model-specific steps.
  2. Check the computer or motherboard manual to confirm that the M.2 slot supports NVMe drives and the 990 PRO’s physical size. M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee that every slot supports NVMe.
  3. If you are comfortable handling internal hardware, reseat the SSD as directed by the system manual. Avoid forcing the drive or touching contacts.
  4. Check the system maker’s documentation for relevant BIOS settings and whether a BIOS update is recommended. Menu labels and slot behavior vary by model, so do not guess at a setting.

If the drive remains absent, Samsung recommends trying it in another computer to help isolate whether the problem follows the drive or stays with the system. A compatible M.2 NVMe USB enclosure is another possible test setup, but verify NVMe support, physical-size compatibility, USB interface, and host compatibility; an enclosure result alone does not prove the SSD has failed.

If BIOS sees the drive but Windows does not

  1. Open Device Manager and check whether Windows lists the SSD or an unknown storage device. If it is absent there, consult the computer maker’s documentation for storage-controller configuration and drivers that apply to that system.
  2. Open Disk Management and look for the disk. A drive that appears there without a partition or volume is different from a drive Windows cannot enumerate.
  3. If the SSD is new and empty, Windows may require partition setup before it can be used as a volume. Proceed only after confirming that no data needs to be recovered.

Do not initialize, partition, or format a drive that contains data you need. Those actions can overwrite information or make recovery harder. If the drive was previously used or may contain important files, stop before making changes and consider qualified data-recovery advice.

If Windows sees the SSD but Samsung Magician does not

Magician visibility is not the same as hardware detection. Samsung recommends refreshing Magician or restarting the computer and confirming that the operating system detects the drive. Its FAQ also lists outdated BIOS, RAID/SCSI controller presentation, and port issues as possible reasons the utility may not recognize an SSD.

  • Refresh Magician, then restart Windows if the drive still does not appear.
  • Confirm the SSD is visible in Device Manager or Disk Management. If it is absent from Windows too, return to the relevant Windows or BIOS checks rather than treating Magician as the cause.
  • Check whether the drive is presented through RAID or a SCSI controller mode, and whether the port or system configuration is one Magician supports.
  • Samsung notes that older AMD chipsets or drivers may not be supported by Magician and suggests the Microsoft default driver for this utility-recognition issue. This is not a fix for a drive missing from BIOS/UEFI.

When and how to check 990 PRO firmware

Only investigate a firmware update when the SSD is detected well enough for Samsung’s update utility to communicate with it. Back up important data first. Samsung strongly advises a complete backup before a firmware update, even though its FAQ says the update process does not impact stored data.

Firmware is model- and date-sensitive. Samsung’s official SSD firmware and software page, checked on October 3, 2026, lists 990 PRO firmware 8B2QJXD7, released in December 2025, as intended “To improve read-operation stability.” The same listing describes 7B2QJXD7, released in September 2025, as intended “To address the intermittent non-recognition and blue screen issue.” Check the live listing and select the exact 990 PRO model before acting; availability and relevance may change. Firmware flashing is not a troubleshooting option if the drive is too inaccessible for the updater to detect.

When to stop troubleshooting and escalate

  • If the SSD remains absent across a verified compatible computer or slot, contact Samsung support or use the applicable warranty channel.
  • If the drive contains important data without a backup, stop format, initialization, reset, or other write experiments and seek qualified recovery advice.
  • If the drive is absent only from one computer, use that system maker’s documentation or support to investigate slot support, BIOS configuration, and controller presentation.

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance does not endorse a particular recovery provider. For a possible replacement, compare the exact 990 PRO capacity and model against the computer maker’s supported drive and slot specifications; do not assume every M.2 slot accepts every M.2 SSD.
