Yes—the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB is a strong buy at Amazon’s reported $389.99 price if you need a high-end PCIe 4.0 SSD. Digital Citizen reported the deal on October 2, 2026, compared with Samsung’s $639.99 reference price: a $250 reduction, or approximately 39%. The listing was in stock through Amazon’s buy box when checked, but price, inventory and seller can change without notice.

This is the bare M.2 2280 model MZ-V9P2T0B/AM, not the version with an integrated heatsink. Plan for separate cooling if your desktop, laptop or PS5 installation requires it.

What you get for $389.99

The discounted product is Samsung’s 2TB 990 PRO, using a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and NVMe 2.0. It includes Samsung’s in-house controller, V-NAND TLC flash and a 2GB LPDDR4 DRAM cache. Best Buy’s listing independently identifies model MZ-V9P2T0B/AM and the same headline performance figures.

Is the deal price genuinely good?

Against Samsung’s own $639.99 reference price, $389.99 is exactly $250 less. That reference figure is a list or comparison anchor, however, not proof that $639.99 was the drive’s normal street price. Treat $389.99 as the relevant purchase price and verify the live Amazon seller, stock status and checkout total before ordering.

At the deal price, the 2TB capacity works out to about $195 per terabyte. The value is strongest when you specifically want a premium PCIe 4.0 drive with DRAM, high rated random performance and a 1,200 TBW endurance rating rather than the lowest-cost 2TB SSD.

Who should buy the 990 PRO 2TB

PCIe 4.0 desktop and laptop owners

The 990 PRO is designed for systems with a PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot. It is a suitable boot, application, game-library or project drive for a modern desktop or laptop that cannot use Gen5 bandwidth.

Gaming-system builders

Games benefit from fast storage and responsive random access, but a PCIe 4.0 drive is generally the appropriate match for a PCIe 4.0 platform. The 990 PRO also provides enough capacity for a substantial game library without moving to a slower budget model.

Content creators and power users

Photo catalogs, software projects, virtual machines and editing caches can benefit from the controller, DRAM and high random I/O ratings. If your workflow writes hundreds of gigabytes continuously, evaluate sustained performance and cooling rather than relying only on the 6,900 MB/s burst number.

Bare drive or heatsink version?

This Amazon configuration is the bare drive. It does not include Samsung’s separately sold heatsink version or an integrated heat spreader. The M.2 2280 module must be installed under your motherboard’s M.2 shield or paired with a compatible heatsink where required.

  • For a laptop, confirm that the chassis has clearance for a bare 2280 module; desktop heatsinks may not fit.
  • Keep the SSD within its specified thermal environment and avoid obstructing airflow around the M.2 slot.

Will it work in a PCIe 4.0 PC?

Yes. The drive is a native PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD, so it is intended for a compatible M.2 slot. It can also operate in a platform that supports a lower PCIe generation, but the system will limit throughput to that interface. Confirm that the slot supports NVMe storage—not only SATA M.2—and check your motherboard or laptop manual for lane-sharing limitations.

Will it work in a PS5?

The 990 PRO’s M.2 2280 format and PCIe 4.0 interface are appropriate for PS5 expansion, provided the particular console installation meets Sony’s requirements. This bare configuration still needs a compatible heatsink, because the PS5 expansion slot requires M.2 cooling. Measure the complete drive-and-heatsink height and follow the console’s installation guidance before purchase.

990 PRO 2TB versus Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB

Tom’s Hardware reported the Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB at about $399.99—roughly $10 more than the 990 PRO deal. The 9100 PRO uses PCIe 5.0 and has substantially higher rated sequential speeds, making it the more relevant choice for a PCIe 5.0 workstation or other professional workload that can use that bandwidth.

Drive Reported price Interface Rated positioning Best fit
Samsung 990 PRO 2TB $389.99 at Amazon, October 2, 2026 PCIe 4.0 x4 Up to 7,450/6,900 MB/s sequential read/write PCIe 4.0 PCs, gaming systems and general high-performance storage
Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB About $399.99, reported by Tom’s Hardware in 2026 PCIe 5.0 Substantially higher rated sequential speeds; exact figures not stated here PCIe 5.0 workstations and demanding professional workloads
Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB $369.99 in a reported comparison; verify live price Slower line than the 990 PRO, according to that comparison Exact figures not stated here Buyers prioritizing a lower price over 990 PRO performance

Choose the 9100 PRO only if your system supports PCIe 5.0 and your workload can benefit from it. On a PCIe 4.0 machine, paying extra for a Gen5 model will not create Gen5 transfer rates. The 990 EVO Plus may save $20, but its reported positioning is slower; compare the current street prices, warranty terms and workload requirements before choosing it.

What to check before placing the order

  1. Verify that the listing says Samsung 990 PRO 2TB and model MZ-V9P2T0B/AM.
  2. Confirm that the offer is the bare M.2 2280 drive if that is what your system supports, or budget for a separate heatsink.
  3. Check the current seller, delivery date, return policy and final checkout price; the reported $389.99 price and stock status are not guaranteed to persist.
  4. Confirm your system has an NVMe-capable M.2 slot, the required PCIe generation and adequate physical clearance.

Verdict

At $389.99, the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB is worth buying for a high-performance PCIe 4.0 desktop, laptop, gaming system or workstation, especially when you value DRAM, TLC flash and strong endurance. It is not the right choice if you need an included heatsink, require PCIe 5.0 performance, or are shopping solely for the cheapest 2TB capacity. The reported $399.99 9100 PRO is the better technical match for a PCIe 5.0 professional system; otherwise, the 990 PRO deal saves money without sacrificing the performance its platform can use.
