Short answer: If your Samsung 980 PRO 2TB reports firmware 3B2QGXA7, back up the drive and update it promptly. Samsung currently lists 5B2QGXA7 as the 980 PRO firmware, while Puget Systems reported that Samsung identified 3B2QGXA7 with premature-failure symptoms. A firmware update is preventive; it cannot reliably repair an SSD that is already read-only, missing, or critically unhealthy.

This guidance is current to August 18, 2026. It applies to the retail Samsung SSD 980 PRO NVMe M.2, including the 2TB model commonly sold as MZ-V8P2T0B/AM. Verify the exact model and firmware in software rather than relying on the label, heatsink, or retailer listing.

What happened to some Samsung 980 PRO drives?

The historical issue centered on firmware 3B2QGXA7. Reported behavior included rapidly increasing SMART percentage-used readings, critical-health warnings, read-only operation, and eventual disappearance or failure. Puget Systems reported Samsung’s acknowledgement of the problem and recommendation to move affected 980 PRO drives to 5B2QGXA7 (Puget Systems’ firmware advisory).

This does not mean every 2TB drive running 3B2QGXA7 will fail. It does mean that a functioning drive on that firmware should be treated as needing a backup and prompt preventive update.

Prevention, recovery, and replacement are different jobs

  • Prevention: update a detected, functioning SSD after making a verified backup.
  • Recovery: copy or clone data from a drive that is read-only, unstable, or intermittently detected.
  • Replacement: warranty-service or replace media whose controller, NAND, or other hardware has already failed.

Installing corrected firmware is intended to prevent recurrence. It is not a repair for corrupted data or an already failed SSD.

Which firmware version should a 980 PRO 2TB have?

Firmware What to do
3B2QGXA7 Historically associated with the abnormal-wear and failure reports. Back up immediately and update if the drive is functioning.
4B2QGXA7 Puget Systems reported no matching failure symptoms in its internal records. Continue normal health monitoring.
5B2QGXA7 Samsung’s currently listed 980 PRO firmware and the principal corrective target in the historical advisory.
Any other version Do not infer its status. Check Samsung’s current firmware listing or Magician for the exact model.

Samsung’s firmware tools page currently lists “NVMe SSD-980 PRO Series Firmware — ISO 5B2QGXA7”: Samsung Consumer Storage Support Tools. The page lists newer releases for some other SSD families, but not a newer 980 PRO entry alongside 5B2QGXA7. That supports calling 5B2QGXA7 the currently listed version, not a permanent guarantee against every future SSD failure.

Confirm that you have the affected retail drive

The target is the consumer Samsung SSD 980 PRO NVMe M.2, not the ordinary Samsung 980, 990 PRO, portable SSD, or an OEM PM-series drive. The official 2TB model support page is Samsung’s MZ-V8P2T0BW support page.

OEM drives installed by a computer manufacturer can have different firmware eligibility and reduced Magician functionality. Check the PC maker before applying a retail 980 PRO package.

How to check firmware and health

Windows: Samsung Magician

  1. Download Samsung Magician from Samsung’s official tools page.
  2. Launch Magician and select the 980 PRO 2TB.
  3. Open Drive Details or the firmware/update area.
  4. Record the model, capacity, firmware revision, drive health, percentage used, temperature, and SMART warnings.
  5. If the revision is 3B2QGXA7 and Magician offers an update, back up before proceeding.

Samsung’s model page currently shows Magician 9.0.1, with Windows and macOS installers dated March 30, 2026. Samsung states that internal SSD firmware updating is not supported on macOS or Android; use Windows or the bootable ISO instead (model support page).

Windows and Linux cross-checks

In PowerShell, you can try:

Get-PhysicalDisk | Get-StorageFirmwareInformation

Results vary with storage-controller configuration, so treat Magician as the primary check. On Linux, install nvme-cli where available and run:

sudo nvme list

The command may show the firmware revision, subject to distribution, permissions, and controller visibility.

  • Next-level SSD performance: Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD for next-level computing. 980 PRO delivers 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe 3.0, while maintaining compatibility with PCIe 3.0.
  • Maximum Speed: Get read speeds up to 7,000 MB s with 980 PRO and push the limits of what SSDs can do. Powered by a new Elpsis controller designed to harmonize the flash memory components and the interface for superior speed – with a PCIe 4.0 interface that’s 2x faster than PCIe 3.0 SSDs and 12x faster than Samsung SATA SSDs – every component of this NVMe SSD is manufactured by Samsung for performance that lasts.
  • A winning combination: Designed for hardcore gamers and tech-savvy users, the 980 PRO offers high-performance bandwidth and throughput for heavy-duty applications in gaming, graphics, data analytics, and more. It's fast at loading games, so you can play more and wait less.
  • Efficient M.2 SSD: The 980 PRO comes in a compact M.2 2280 form factor, which can be easily plugged into desktops and laptops. Due to its size and thus optimized power efficiency, it’s ideal for building high-performance computing systems.
  • Reliable thermal control: High-performance SSDs usually require high-performance thermal control. To ensure stable performance, the 980 PRO uses nickel coating to help manage the controller's heat level and a heat spreader label to deliver effective thermal control of the NAND chip.

Prepare before updating

  • Make a verified backup. For a boot drive, create an image or clone and confirm that it can be read.
  • Save encryption recovery information. Keep the BitLocker recovery key; suspend protection if your security configuration requires it.
  • Close active work. Stop virtual machines, games, transfers, encryption jobs, benchmarks, and other disk-intensive applications.
  • Use stable power. Connect a laptop to AC power and avoid an unstable electrical supply or active overclocking.
  • Document RAID/VMD settings. Do not casually switch RAID, Intel VMD, or AMD RAID modes; changing them can prevent an existing installation or array from booting.

Firmware updating normally preserves user data, but Samsung warns that power loss or interruption can cause data loss or leave the SSD unusable. Its update instructions are available at Samsung SSD firmware update support.

Update with Samsung Magician

  1. Install the current Magician release and select the 980 PRO 2TB.
  2. Open Update or the firmware section. Labels can vary by version and region.
  3. Use the Update control beside the available new version.
  4. Confirm that the target for this historical 980 PRO case is 5B2QGXA7.
  5. Start the process. Do not shut down, reset, remove the SSD, terminate Magician, or disconnect power.
  6. Allow the requested reboot. Samsung notes that a restart may be required before the new revision appears.
  7. Reopen Magician and verify the firmware, health, temperature, and data access.

Keep the backup until the drive has operated normally and you have another current backup.

Use the bootable Samsung ISO when Magician is unsuitable

The ISO is useful when Magician cannot detect the SSD, Windows is unsupported, Linux is in use, the drive is secondary, or a live update repeatedly fails. It is a bootable firmware environment, not a Windows driver or ordinary installer.

  1. Download the 980 PRO 5B2QGXA7 ISO from Samsung’s tools page.
  2. Back up the SSD and any files on the USB drive.
  3. Use an ISO-writing utility to create bootable USB media. Creating it can erase the USB.
  4. Shut down and boot from the USB through the motherboard’s BIOS/UEFI boot menu.
  5. Let Samsung’s utility scan for supported SSDs.
  6. Select the correct 980 PRO if multiple drives are present.
  7. Confirm the update and keep the system powered until it completes.
  8. Reboot into the operating system and verify the revision.

Samsung’s bootable-media instructions and interruption warning are documented at Samsung SSD firmware update support and in its firmware utility manual.

If Magician cannot detect the SSD

  • Refresh Magician and reboot.
  • Confirm that the drive appears in Device Manager, Disk Management, and UEFI/BIOS.
  • Use a direct motherboard M.2 connection rather than a USB enclosure or adapter.
  • Test it as a secondary drive in another compatible computer.
  • Try the bootable Samsung ISO.
  • Check whether RAID, Intel VMD, AMD RAID, or another SCSI/storage controller is hiding the drive.
  • Do not initialize, format, or overwrite a disk containing valuable data because Windows prompts you to do so.

Samsung documents detection and update limitations with RAID/SCSI controllers and some older AMD configurations at Samsung Magician support. Changing controller modes can affect booting or an existing array, so preserve the original configuration and obtain an appropriate backup first.

If the update hangs

Do not immediately power-cycle a process that may still be running. Follow Magician’s instructions and allow reasonable time. If the system is clearly unresponsive:

  • Record the displayed firmware and error message.
  • After recovery, clone or back up the SSD if it remains accessible.
  • Try the SSD as a secondary drive in another computer.
  • Try the bootable ISO and a direct M.2 connection.
  • Remove RAID/VMD complications only when you understand the effect on the installation or array.
  • Contact Samsung or the system builder if the drive is under warranty.

Puget Systems also recommends another computer or enclosure as a troubleshooting option when Magician spins indefinitely on a primary drive, although direct motherboard attachment is preferable for firmware work (Puget Systems’ advisory).

If the 980 PRO is read-only, missing, or critically unhealthy

At that point, data preservation takes priority over updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop unnecessary writes.
  2. Do not run benchmarks, secure erase, formatting, or repair utilities.
  3. Copy irreplaceable files immediately if the disk is readable.
  4. Create a sector-level image or clone if ordinary copying is incomplete.
  5. Work from the clone where possible.
  6. Contact Samsung or the seller for warranty replacement.
  7. Use professional recovery for irreplaceable information when the SSD is unstable or inaccessible.

A read-only drive may still permit copying or cloning, but Puget Systems reported that Samsung Data Migration was unsuccessful in its failed/read-only testing because it expects a functional primary operating-system drive (Puget Systems’ advisory). Do not expect 5B2QGXA7 to restore a drive that has already suffered hardware or media failure.

Should you update, monitor, or replace?

Condition Best next action
Detected normally, backed up, and on 3B2QGXA7 or older Update promptly, then verify firmware and health.
On 4B2QGXA7 or 5B2QGXA7 with no warning signs Monitor health and maintain backups; replacement is not automatically required.
Read-only, intermittently absent in BIOS/UEFI, critical SMART failure, implausible rapidly rising percentage used, or repeated update failure Prioritize cloning, warranty service, or replacement rather than repeated update attempts.

Corrected firmware addresses the known 3B2QGXA7 risk; it does not eliminate ordinary NAND wear, controller faults, overheating, power-loss damage, or filesystem corruption.

Special cases

PlayStation 5

A PS5 cannot normally perform this Samsung firmware update itself. Shut the console down properly, remove the expansion SSD, and connect it to a compatible Windows PC or use Samsung’s bootable ISO. Updating does not inherently require formatting the SSD, although Samsung’s interruption warning makes a backup advisable.

RAID arrays

Firmware utilities may not see drives behind RAID. Updating disks individually can require temporary controller changes that make an array or operating-system installation inaccessible. Record the original settings and follow the motherboard or array documentation before changing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB enclosures and adapters

Many enclosures do not pass firmware commands through to the NVMe drive. Treat an enclosure as a diagnostic workaround, not a universally supported update path; a direct M.2 slot is preferable.

Heatsinks and temperature

A heatsink can reduce thermal throttling, but it does not correct 3B2QGXA7. Temperature checks after updating are useful, yet normal temperature does not prove that firmware-related or other failure risks are absent.
