The Samsung 980 PRO 1TB (model MZ-V8P1T0BW) is a PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 drive rated for sequential reads up to 7,000 MB/s and writes up to 5,000 MB/s. Those are Samsung’s maximum specifications, not results from independent testing in this review. It is a sensible candidate when your system supports a PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 2280 drive and the price, condition, and warranty of the specific unit make sense; the available evidence does not establish its current value against newer alternatives.

What this review can—and cannot—tell you

This is a specification-based buying review of the non-heatsink 1TB 980 PRO, model MZ-V8P1T0BW. No independent benchmarks or hands-on thermal, sustained-write, application-loading, or game-loading tests were performed, so there are no measured results to compare with competing SSDs. Samsung positions the 980 PRO for high-end PCs, workstations, and consoles, but that is manufacturer positioning rather than independent evidence of its standing today.

The practical decision is whether this particular drive fits your system and workload at the price and with the warranty you can actually obtain. Its published speed ratings describe peak sequential performance; they do not, by themselves, predict performance in every system or sustained workload.

Will it work in your M.2 slot?

The drive uses the M.2 2280 form factor and a PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 interface. The label “M.2” alone is not enough to confirm compatibility: check the system or motherboard documentation for the socket’s supported drive type, PCIe generation and lane configuration, and available physical clearance. Some systems also share lanes or ports between sockets, so installing an SSD can affect other connections.

  • PCIe generation: A socket that supports PCIe 4.0 x4 is the match for the drive’s rated interface. A compatible PCIe socket of an earlier generation may operate at that system’s supported capability; do not expect the drive’s PCIe 4.0 rated maximums in that configuration.
  • Form factor and clearance: Confirm support for M.2 2280 and room for the drive or any cover or heatsink your system uses.
  • Slot configuration: Verify that the socket supports NVMe/PCIe drives, not only M.2 SATA, and check the motherboard manual for lane-sharing behavior.

Samsung’s product page lists the product details and its data sheet specifies PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.3c, and M.2 2280. Neither source guarantees that every compatible installation reaches the rated peak speeds.

Do you need the 980 PRO with a heatsink?

Samsung sells a separate 1TB 980 PRO with Heatsink, model MZ-V8P1T0CW. The model reviewed here, MZ-V8P1T0BW, is the non-heatsink version. Compare the full model number before ordering, then check whether your motherboard or device supplies suitable M.2 cooling and whether a heatsinked drive will physically fit. The available specifications do not establish that every installation needs an aftermarket heatsink.

Samsung’s launch announcement described the heatsink version as a distinct product and discussed its console positioning: Samsung 980 PRO launch announcement. That announcement is manufacturer material, not a thermal test of your system.

Warranty, endurance, and support

Samsung lists a 600 TBW endurance rating for the 1TB model and a limited warranty of five years or 600 TBW, whichever comes first. TBW means terabytes written; it is an endurance limit used in the warranty terms, not a promise that a drive will fail when it is reached. Warranty eligibility and remaining coverage can depend on region, seller, product condition, and purchase history, so check the terms that apply to the exact unit—especially if buying used or from a marketplace seller.

Samsung’s support tools page lists firmware ISO 5B2QGXA7 for the 980 PRO series, while its Magician page lists the 1TB model and describes drive-management and firmware features. The cited support listing does not give a release date or version-specific change details, so it does not establish that this firmware fixes any particular fault. Is the Samsung 980 PRO 1TB worth buying?

It can suit a compatible PCIe 4.0 system when you want a 1TB NVMe drive and the specific offer includes a trustworthy seller and acceptable warranty coverage. Its official ratings are strong on paper, but the available evidence does not include independent benchmarks, current competing-drive comparisons, or a price survey. That means there is no evidence-based basis here to call it a current performance leader or a best-value purchase.

  • Consider it if your system supports the interface and form factor, you can verify the exact SKU and condition, and the offer is attractive compared with alternatives available to you.
  • Compare carefully if you have sustained write-heavy work, because peak sequential specifications alone do not show how a drive behaves over longer workloads.
  • Look elsewhere or verify first if your system lacks an NVMe-capable M.2 socket, needs a different physical configuration, or the seller cannot substantiate condition and warranty status.

Before buying, compare total price, warranty remaining, seller terms, cooling provisions, and any competing SSD’s independently measured workload performance. For this drive, confirm the listing says MZ-V8P1T0BW if you want the non-heatsink version.
