For most people with a PCIe 3.0 computer, a healthy Samsung 960 PRO 1TB is still good enough to keep. A 990 PRO makes sense when the computer has a PCIe 4.0 slot, or when you want a faster drive to move into a future build. The 9100 PRO is aimed at PCIe 5.0 systems and demanding large-file workloads—not routine booting, office work, or gaming.
What are the main differences?
The 960 PRO is a PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.2 M.2 2280 SSD. The 990 PRO moves to PCIe 4.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0; the 9100 PRO is a PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 drive. The ratings below are Samsung manufacturer specifications for the 1TB models, not results from a single comparative test.
| Drive | Interface | Sequential read / write | Random read / write | Endurance and warranty | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung 960 PRO 1TB | PCIe 3.0 x4; NVMe 1.2 | Up to 3,500 / 2,100 MB/s | Up to 440,000 / 360,000 IOPS | 800 TBW; five-year manufacturer warranty as specified for the product | Keep in a PCIe 3.0 system if its condition and capacity are acceptable |
| Samsung 990 PRO 1TB | PCIe 4.0 x4; NVMe 2.0 | Up to 7,450 / 6,900 MB/s | Up to 1,200,000 / 1,550,000 IOPS | 600 TBW; five years | PCIe 4.0 upgrade or drive to carry into a newer system |
| Samsung 9100 PRO 1TB | PCIe 5.0 x4; NVMe 2.0 | Up to 14,800 / 13,400 MB/s | Up to 2,200,000 / 2,600,000 IOPS | 600 TBW; five years | PCIe 5.0 system with workloads that benefit from high throughput |
Samsung published the 960 PRO figures in its 2017 data sheet, the 990 PRO figures in its 2022 data sheet, and the 9100 PRO figures in its 2025 specification sheet. Their published figures come from different test contexts: the 960 PRO sheet uses an Intel Z170 platform and older CrystalDiskMark and IOmeter versions; the 990 PRO sheet uses an AMD X570 platform and IOmeter; the 9100 PRO sheet lists rated specifications. They are useful as product-class indicators, not apples-to-apples benchmark results or guaranteed application speeds. Actual results vary with firmware, hardware, workload, queue depth, temperature, and use of the drive’s temporary write cache.
Should you keep the 960 PRO or upgrade?
Keep it on a PCIe 3.0 computer if it is healthy
The 960 PRO already reaches up to 3,500 MB/s sequential reads on Samsung’s published rating, which uses much of what a PCIe 3.0 x4 link can provide. If the drive’s SMART health, remaining life, and capacity are satisfactory, replacing it with a faster-generation SSD in the same computer is unlikely to transform everyday use.
#1 Best Overall
- Storage Capacity: 1 TB SSD.
- Product Type: NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive.
- Interface: PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.2
- Sequential Read Speed: Up to 3,500 MB/sec. Sequential Write Speed: Up to 2,100 MB/sec.
- Random Write Speed: Random Write (4KB, QD32): Up to 360,000 IOPS (Thread 4). Random Read Speed: Random Read (4KB, QD32): Up to 440,000 IOPS (Thread 4).
Check the drive’s health with a SMART-capable utility and look for reported health or life remaining, temperature, and error warnings. The 800 TBW figure is Samsung’s endurance rating for the 1TB model; it is not a prediction that a particular drive will fail at that write total, nor a substitute for checking its actual condition.
Choose the 990 PRO for a PCIe 4.0 upgrade
On a PCIe 4.0 system, the 990 PRO is the straightforward high-end replacement in this comparison. Its sequential and random-I/O ratings are substantially higher than the 960 PRO’s, and Samsung says the 990 PRO is backward-compatible with PCIe 3.0. In a PCIe 3.0 slot, however, it cannot deliver its PCIe 4.0 headline throughput; compatibility does not make the older host link faster.

Consider the 9100 PRO for PCIe 5.0 workloads
The 9100 PRO’s 14,800 / 13,400 MB/s rated sequential read/write speeds require a PCIe 5.0 platform to pursue their advertised ceiling. It is worth considering for work such as large-file transfers, video production, or AI datasets when sustained storage throughput is a real constraint. For ordinary desktop and gaming use, its higher specification alone is not a reason to expect a comparable improvement.

PCIe generation is the first compatibility and value check. Samsung identifies the 990 PRO as backward-compatible with PCIe 3.0, so it can be an option where the motherboard supports an NVMe M.2 drive; it will operate within the host’s link limits. The 9100 PRO is a PCIe 5.0 x4 product, but the material cited here does not provide the same explicit backward-compatibility statement for it. Check the motherboard or laptop manual and drive requirements before buying rather than assuming that every M.2 slot supports every NVMe drive.

Also confirm that the slot supports NVMe (not only M.2 SATA), the M.2 2280 length where applicable, and the intended PCIe lane configuration. Laptop designs can impose additional restrictions on drive thickness, one- versus two-sided component clearance, power, and cooling.
Will an upgrade make games and everyday use much faster?
Not necessarily. Sequential throughput matters most when a workload moves large contiguous files. Booting, launching applications, and loading games involve other limits—including CPU work, decompression, software behavior, and game-engine design—so advertised sequential speeds do not translate directly into proportionally shorter load times. Samsung’s random-I/O ratings also use specific test conditions and should not be treated as a promise of a particular game’s performance.

If a game or application is already responsive on the 960 PRO, replacing it solely to obtain a higher peak transfer rate may deliver less practical benefit than the specification gap suggests. If your workload regularly waits on storage during large transfers or other demanding I/O, a newer host-and-drive combination may be more worthwhile.
What about endurance, warranty, price, and cooling?
Samsung rates the 960 PRO 1TB at 800 TBW and the 990 PRO and 9100 PRO 1TB at 600 TBW each. TBW is a manufacturer endurance rating, not a direct measure of current health or a guarantee of lifespan. For a used 960 PRO, inspect its SMART status and remaining life rather than deciding from the original rating alone.

The listed five-year warranty is the product’s specified warranty duration, not a claim that every older 960 PRO remains covered today. Coverage depends on purchase date, region, and applicable warranty terms. Compare the actual price and remaining coverage of a replacement at the time you buy; no current price comparison is established here.
Thermals and physical fit matter, particularly with a high-performance drive in a laptop or a compact enclosure. Check heatsink clearance and the system’s cooling provisions before choosing a 9100 PRO, whose PCIe 5.0 class makes platform and thermal suitability especially important. A drive that throttles under its real workload may not sustain its peak rated performance.
Quick Recap
Which 1TB replacement should you choose?
- PCIe 3.0 desktop or laptop, healthy 960 PRO: Keep the existing drive unless you need more capacity, have a health concern, or plan to reuse a replacement in a newer system.
- PCIe 4.0 system: Choose the 990 PRO for the clearest all-round performance upgrade in this comparison.
- PCIe 5.0 workstation or enthusiast build: Consider the 9100 PRO if your workload can use high sequential throughput and the system can cool and accommodate it.
- Mostly gaming, browsing, and office work: Do not upgrade on headline speed alone; the 960 PRO may remain a sensible choice if it is healthy and large enough.
