The Samsung 860 EVO M.2 2TB is still a capable SSD if your computer specifically supports M.2 SATA. It is not an NVMe drive: its SATA interface limits it to roughly 550 MB/s sequential reads and 520 MB/s writes under Samsung’s rated conditions. Its 1,200 TBW endurance rating and 2TB capacity remain attractive, but its age and uncertain pricing mean it makes sense mainly when compatibility demands M.2 SATA and the drive is healthy and reasonably priced.
What the Samsung 860 EVO M.2 2TB is
This review covers the Samsung SSD 860 EVO M.2 SATA 2TB, model MZ-N6E2T0BW. It is an M.2 2280 drive using a SATA 6 Gb/s interface—not PCIe or NVMe. Samsung specifies V-NAND described as 3-bit MLC, an MJX controller and 2GB of LPDDR4 DRAM. The compact format suits compatible laptops, mini-PCs and desktops without needing a separate SATA data cable. Samsung’s product specifications identify the exact model and its rated features.

Compatibility: M.2 SATA is not NVMe
M.2 describes a module’s shape and connector. SATA and PCIe/NVMe describe how storage communicates with the computer. The 860 EVO M.2 uses SATA, so it will not work in a slot that supports only NVMe just because it fits physically. Depending on the computer, an M.2 slot may support SATA, PCIe/NVMe, both, or neither. Check the laptop or motherboard manual for explicit M.2 SATA support and 2280-length support before buying.

Samsung lists the drive as M.2 2280 SATA 6 Gb/s, with backward compatibility for slower SATA link rates on its specification page. A SATA M.2 module still needs a slot electrically wired for SATA.
Will it work in a PS5?
No—not as internal PS5 expansion storage. The 860 EVO is SATA, whereas PS5 expansion requires a compatible PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD meeting Sony’s platform requirements. Do not treat a customer review claiming otherwise as proof of compatibility.
Performance: fast for SATA, not a modern NVMe substitute
Rated speeds and everyday use
Samsung rates the 2TB model at up to 550 MB/s sequential reads and 520 MB/s sequential writes, with up to 97,000 random-read and 88,000 random-write IOPS at 4KB. Those are manufacturer-rated peaks, not guaranteed outcomes; Samsung notes that performance depends on firmware, hardware and system configuration. On a compatible SATA III host, sequential throughput is already close to the interface’s practical ceiling.

For Windows or Linux booting, office work, application launches, game storage and replacing a hard disk, it should still feel responsive. It cannot match the substantially higher throughput available from modern NVMe drives, which matters more for very large transfers, heavy scratch-disk activity, compilation and demanding multitasking. For a broader explanation of the SATA-versus-NVMe trade-off, see Tech Advisor’s 860 EVO review.
Long writes and benchmark results
The advertised write peak should not be read as a guaranteed sustained speed for an indefinitely long transfer. Intelligent TurboWrite can help short writes; once its cache is exhausted, a long write may slow. The result depends on firmware, host, free space, workload and test software. A result below Samsung’s rated peak can also reflect the host, drive fill level, thermals or SATA-link limits rather than a fault.
The SSD Review tested the exact 2TB M.2 version, while other coverage may use a different capacity or the 2.5-inch model. Such historical tests are useful context, not 2026 measurements or a current comparison against new drives. The SSD Review’s exact-model coverage is the closest cited testing match.

Endurance, reliability and warranty
Samsung rates the 2TB model for 1,200 TBW (terabytes written). That is an endurance figure used in the warranty terms, not a countdown to certain failure; reaching it does not by itself mean the SSD will stop working. The five-year warranty is subject to Samsung’s terms and the applicable TBW limit, whichever comes first. See Samsung’s warranty information for the governing terms.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a used drive, evaluate its actual condition rather than relying on the original rating. Check SMART health, total host writes, power-on hours and error indicators, and test performance after a secure erase if practical. TBW does not protect against controller or firmware failure, electrical damage, accidental deletion or lost data; keep a separate backup of anything important.
Installation and first setup
- Verify compatibility: Use the device manual to confirm M.2 SATA support, 2280 length and any shared-port restrictions.
- Power down: Shut the computer down and disconnect power. Follow the manufacturer’s service procedure, especially for a laptop with an internal battery.
- Fit the drive: Insert the module at the slot’s recommended angle, then lower it and secure it with the correct retaining screw. Do not force the connector.
- Confirm detection: Check the firmware/UEFI storage information. Menu names vary by manufacturer, so use the system manual rather than assuming a universal path.
- Prepare the disk: In the operating system, initialize and partition a new data drive if it is not already set up. A drive detected by firmware may not appear as a usable volume until this is done.
- Set up a boot drive: Install the operating system or clone the existing one, then confirm that the system boots from the intended drive.
- Check health: Confirm SMART reporting and TRIM support in the operating system, and review drive health periodically.
The M.2 installation avoids a separate SATA cable, but it does not bypass the need for SATA wiring in the slot itself. Slot behavior, boot settings and mounting details vary by computer.

Samsung Magician and model-specific support
Samsung Magician can provide drive information, health monitoring, benchmarking and supported maintenance functions. Samsung’s model-specific support page lists Magician 6.2.1 and Data Migration Tool 4.0.3 for Windows 7/8/8.1/10, both dated November 2020. That makes the 860 EVO a legacy product in software-support terms; check current operating-system compatibility and available firmware before relying on a particular utility. The support page documents the model but does not establish current retail availability. Samsung 860 EVO 2TB support.

860 EVO M.2 versus 2.5-inch 860 EVO
There is no meaningful speed advantage to expect from the M.2 version when compared with a 2.5-inch 860 EVO using the same SATA interface and controller family. M.2’s benefit is its compact, cable-free installation. Windows Central notes that the 860 EVO line was sold in several form factors while remaining SATA-based; its review did not test this exact 2TB M.2 model. Windows Central’s review.
860 EVO versus 850 EVO
The 860 EVO brought a newer MJX controller, higher-capacity cache changes and a higher rated endurance tier, with a five-year warranty. But both drives face SATA’s throughput limit, so a healthy 850 EVO is not likely to feel dramatically slower in ordinary use. Consider an upgrade based on condition, capacity, endurance, warranty and price—not headline sequential speeds alone. Tech Advisor’s review discusses the controller and cache changes.
860 EVO versus 870 EVO
The 870 EVO is a newer Samsung SATA generation, but the cited Samsung support page is for the 2.5-inch 2TB model; it does not establish an M.2 SATA equivalent. It can suit a system with a 2.5-inch bay, but it is not an automatic replacement in a laptop or mini-PC with only an M.2 SATA slot. Check the exact form factor before comparing prices. Samsung 870 EVO 2TB support.
When NVMe or another drive is the better option
- NVMe system: If the manual confirms PCIe NVMe support and performance matters, choose a compatible NVMe M.2 SSD instead. Do not assume a SATA drive will work in an NVMe-only slot.
- 2.5-inch bay: Compare current, warrantied SATA 2.5-inch drives, including the 870 EVO, rather than paying extra for legacy M.2 SATA stock.
- M.2 SATA-only system: Compare any available M.2 SATA alternative against a verified 860 EVO; form-factor and protocol compatibility come first.
Samsung’s 970 EVO NVMe product page is an example of a different protocol and product class, not a compatible substitute for an M.2 SATA-only slot.
Buying used or old stock in 2026
Samsung’s documentation still identifies the model, but the model-specific software listings are dated and the cited sources do not establish a dependable current U.S. retail price or stock. Treat listings as regional and potentially used or old stock; do not use a historical launch price as a current value benchmark.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Ask for a clear photo showing the MZ-N6E2T0BW model number and request a SMART report.
- Review total host writes, power-on hours and error counts; avoid drives with reallocated or uncorrectable errors.
- Prefer a reputable seller with a return window and clear warranty status.
- Be wary of unlabeled OEM pulls, implausibly low prices, claims that every M.2 SSD is NVMe, or drives offered without returns.
- Compare the price with newer warrantied alternatives; do not pay a legacy premium simply for the Samsung name.
A SMART screenshot is useful evidence, not proof that a second-hand drive has no hidden history or future risk.
Verdict: buy only when M.2 SATA is the deciding requirement
The 860 EVO M.2 2TB remains a sensible-capability SATA SSD, with useful capacity and a strong rated endurance figure. Buy it only if your system explicitly supports M.2 SATA, the individual drive is demonstrably healthy, and the price makes sense against available alternatives. If your system is NVMe-only, you need PS5 internal expansion, or a newer NVMe drive is supported and performance is the priority, skip it.
