Neither Sam’s Club nor Costco can be called the cheaper choice for fresh groceries without comparing the same items in your local clubs on the same day. Their delivery pricing does differ: Sam’s Club says Delivery from Club has no item markup, while Costco says Same-Day prices are higher than local warehouse prices. Selection, fees, and pickup or delivery availability also depend on your ZIP code, membership, and club.
Which is cheaper for fresh groceries?
There is no established, national head-to-head price result for a matched basket of fresh groceries. Compare your local prices by unit, weight, or count rather than assuming one retailer is cheaper based on its delivery policy.
The channel matters. Sam’s Club says Delivery from Club uses the same item prices as in-club, Curbside Pickup, or online shopping. Costco says its Same-Day item prices are higher than local warehouse prices to cover service and delivery costs. Which has the better produce and meat selection?
The available category listings show that both retailers offer fresh-food options, but they do not establish comparable item counts, quality, package sizes, or in-stock rates.
Sam’s Club
A Philadelphia-area Sam’s Club grocery page lists beverages, deli items, frozen food, dairy, seafood, meat, fruits, vegetables, coffee, and snacks, with delivery and curbside pickup for eligible items. This is an example of a local listing, not a promise of the same assortment at every club. Check the Philadelphia club’s grocery page for its local details.

Costco
Costco says Same-Day members in qualifying ZIP codes can order perishables such as organic meats, produce, and seafood. Its Same-Day service describes about 2,000 eligible grocery items, but availability depends on ZIP code; that figure is not a count of fresh products alone. Details are on Costco’s grocery page.
For the items you actually buy, compare both local catalogs on the same date. Note the specific produce, meat, seafood, or dairy item; package weight or count; unit price; and whether it is in stock. A broad category listing cannot tell you whether a particular club has your preferred cut, variety, size, or brand.

How convenient are pickup and delivery?
Sam’s Club pickup and delivery
Sam’s Club offers Delivery from Club through its website or app, with standard, express, same-day, and next-day options described in its FAQ. Express can arrive as soon as one hour; same-day orders should be placed by 1 p.m. The FAQ says the general delivery area is within 15 miles of a club, but slots and service availability depend on location and demand. These are published service details, so confirm the options shown for your address in the app or at checkout.
For curbside pickup, the Philadelphia page describes choosing items marked for pickup, selecting a time, and checking in from the club parking area for loading. In that local example, Plus pickup scheduling may begin at 7 a.m. and Club pickup at 9 a.m.; those times should not be treated as universal. See the Philadelphia grocery page.

Costco Same-Day delivery
Costco Same-Day uses Instacart and is available only in qualifying ZIP codes. Costco says the customer must be present for delivery and can discuss substitutions or request a refund for unavailable items. Its $35 minimum and higher-than-warehouse item prices mean you should evaluate the full checkout total against the convenience you gain, not compare only the listed item prices. - Make a short recurring list. Include the fresh items your household buys regularly, not a hypothetical basket chosen to favor one store.
- Check both clubs on the same day. Use the local catalog or visit each warehouse, and note availability as well as price.
- Normalize package sizes. Record package weight or count and calculate the unit price so differently sized packs can be compared.
- Separate shopping channels. Compare warehouse prices with warehouse prices, or delivery with delivery. Costco Same-Day prices are higher than warehouse prices, while Sam’s Club says Delivery from Club has no item markup.
- Add costs you would actually incur. Include applicable delivery or pickup charges and, if relevant to your decision, the travel or waiting time. Do not count a delivery fee for an order you would collect yourself.
- Include membership and rewards terms only when they apply. Sam’s Club says Delivery from Club orders do not accrue Sam’s Cash. Costco says eligible Executive Membership and Costco Anywhere Visa rewards apply to CostcoGrocery shopping. Verify current program terms for your account and channel.
Is grocery delivery worth it?
Delivery is most useful when the saved trip or time is worth the fees and any channel-specific price difference to you. For Sam’s Club, check your membership’s published delivery fee and whether your order qualifies for the Plus standard-delivery threshold. For Costco, include the Same-Day minimum and the higher item prices in your calculation. In either case, check the address-specific catalog, available delivery windows, and final checkout total before deciding.
