Meanwhile, a Bermuda-based insurer that sells Bitcoin-denominated life insurance, announced on October 8, 2026 that it had secured $37.5 million in new funding. Bain Capital Crypto led the round, and the company says its total fundraising now exceeds $180 million. Sam Altman is among Meanwhile’s backers, but the announcement does not say he invested in or led this round.

What Meanwhile announced

The figures below come from Meanwhile’s own announcement of October 8, 2026, distributed through Business Wire and STT Info. They are the company’s statements, not independently verified data.

  • Round size: $37.5 million in new funding.
  • Lead investor: Bain Capital Crypto.
  • Other participants: Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital.
  • Investor status: The company describes every participant as an existing investor.
  • Cumulative fundraising: More than $180 million, according to the company.

The company frames the raise as a response to international demand, particularly from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile, put it this way: “Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on.” He added: “Brokers came to us because their clients kept asking. This round lets us keep up with them.”

What the company sells

Meanwhile offers two policy lines, and they are aimed at different groups. Both are Bitcoin-denominated life insurance products.

BTC Life 1-Pay

BTC Life 1-Pay launched in early 2026. It is a single-premium whole-life policy for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. A single premium means the policy is funded with one payment rather than a series of payments.

BTC 10-Pay

BTC 10-Pay is designed for U.S. taxpayers. The announcement does not describe its premium schedule, so readers should not assume it works the same way as the 1-Pay line.

Intended client High-net-worth clients outside the United States U.S. taxpayers
Premium structure Single premium Not stated in the October 8, 2026 announcement
Policy type Whole life Not stated in the October 8, 2026 announcement

Regulatory footing and who can buy

The insurer that issues these policies is Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, a subsidiary of Meanwhile Incorporated. According to the announcement, it holds the first Class IILT license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. The license was granted in July 2024, after the company spent two years in the regulator’s sandbox.

Availability is narrow. The company says the Bermuda insurer is licensed to transact long-term business with Sophisticated Persons only. Products are not available in every jurisdiction, and they are distributed through appropriately licensed intermediaries where permitted. A general reader cannot simply sign up directly, and a policy that is offered in one country may not be offered in another.

The company also states that its balance sheet, reserves, and audited financial statements are denominated in Bitcoin, and that policyholder Bitcoin is held with regulated institutional custodians. These are company statements in the announcement. The announcement does not include independent verification of them.

Company-reported growth and what it does not prove

Meanwhile says its net long-term underwriting income had already exceeded the prior year’s total and is on track to more than double in 2026. The announcement does not include the underlying income statement figures, so this is an operating claim the company has made rather than a result a reader can check from the release.

Stefan Cohen, partner at Bain Capital Crypto, described the company this way: “Meanwhile owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup.” He added: “The growth this year proves the model, and we’re glad to back them again.” Both statements are from interested parties and should be read as investor and founder commentary, not as neutral assessments.

What to check before going further

If the estate-transfer idea behind the company’s pitch applies to you, the announcement points to several questions that a licensed distributor should be able to answer in writing:

  1. Whether you fall within the eligibility categories the insurer is licensed to serve, and in which jurisdictions the product is offered to you.
  2. Which licensed intermediary would sell the policy to you, and whether that intermediary is authorized in your country.
  3. Which line applies to your tax status. The 1-Pay and 10-Pay lines are described for different groups, so confirm the correct one in writing.
  4. How the Bitcoin held for policyholders is custodied, and what happens to the policy if the Bitcoin price moves.
  5. What tax and estate-planning advice you need from professionals in your own jurisdiction before buying anything.

The funding news confirms that Meanwhile has backing and a Bermuda license. It does not confirm that its products suit any particular buyer, so the details of a specific policy need to come from the insurer’s licensed distributor.
