Salt Lake Stadium—officially Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, or VYBK—is Kolkata’s landmark football venue in Bidhannagar, West Bengal. Its history spans crowds that once exceeded 130,000, a major renovation that made it an all-seater stadium, and international events including the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup final. The figures describe different eras and configurations: the West Bengal government lists a general capacity of 85,000, while FIFA recorded a lower tournament setup for the 2017 World Cup.
What and where is Salt Lake Stadium?
Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan is the stadium’s full name; Salt Lake Stadium is the name most commonly used. It stands in Bidhannagar, Kolkata, on the city’s eastern metropolitan bypass, according to the West Bengal Department of Disaster Management plan. FIFA says the name honors Swami Vivekananda and translates roughly as “Vivekananda Indian Youth Stadium” in English (FIFA’s stadium profile).
The stadium opened in January 1984 with the Jawaharlal Nehru International Gold Cup tournament. FIFA’s 2016 venue profile also records events including the 1985 Pre-World Cup Tournament, the South Asian Federation Games in 1987, and several editions of the Super-Soccers and Jawaharlal Nehru International Gold Cup. Later landmark events included a 2011 friendly between Argentina and Venezuela and Oliver Kahn’s farewell match with Bayern Munich against Mohun Bagan.
Why do Salt Lake Stadium capacity figures differ?
There is no single number that describes every era and event setup. Renovation, seating configuration and the purpose for which a figure was reported all matter.

The government plan says the renovation installed bucket seats and reduced capacity from well over 100,000 to around 80,000, while listing the stadium at 85,000. Those descriptions are not interchangeable measurements: the plan’s rounded account of the reduction and its listed capacity refer to the renovated venue, while the 66,600 figure is tied to FIFA’s tournament configuration.
A football landmark with a multipurpose design
Salt Lake Stadium is closely identified with the Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. FIFA describes it as one of India’s best-known football arenas and highlights the rivalry; the stadium hosted the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 (FIFA’s 2020 venue article).

It is also designed for uses beyond football. The West Bengal government plan describes a 105-by-70-metre main football arena and a synthetic athletics track. The Indian Super League venue directory lists East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan SG among the clubs whose home games are held at Salt Lake Stadium (ISL venue page). That does not mean every match for either club takes place there; check the listing for the specific fixture and season.

Getting oriented for a visit
The ISL venue page gives approximate distances of 1.5 km from Salt Lake Stadium Metro Station, 6 km from Sealdah Railway Station and 13 km from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (ISL venue page).
