Pakistan’s Saim Ayub dismissed India’s Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and made a baby-cradle gesture as the batter left the field during the men’s Asian Games 2026 gold-medal final. The moment was a brief flashpoint in a high-stakes match; Hindustan Times reported that India’s players did not respond and play remained calm.
What happened between Saim Ayub and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?
Hindustan Times reported that Sooryavanshi attempted a reverse sweep against Ayub, edged the ball to wicketkeeper Usman Khan and was dismissed. Ayub then made the cradle gesture toward him as he departed. India Today also described the gesture and reported Sooryavanshi’s score as 15 from nine balls.
The gesture drew attention as an early flashpoint, but the available match-day accounts do not establish Ayub’s motive. Hindustan Times says the Indian players did not respond and that the game continued calmly.

This was not a routine group-stage exchange: the fixture was the men’s gold-medal match at the Asian Games. The ICC scheduled it for October 3, 2026, in Nisshin, Japan. In its pre-final coverage, the ICC said both India and Pakistan were unbeaten entering the final.

The teams arrived by different semifinal routes. The ICC reported on October 1 that Pakistan advanced after beating Bangladesh in a rain-reduced semifinal, while India reached the final by beating Sri Lanka. In that semifinal, Sooryavanshi scored 38 from 21 balls—a separate innings from his 15 off nine in the final.
What happened next in Ayub’s over?
India Today reported that after Sooryavanshi’s dismissal, Abhishek Sharma hit a six and two boundaries in Ayub’s over. That is the sequence reported; it does not show that the celebration caused or changed Sharma’s response.

What the pre-final comments said about the occasion
Before the final, India batting coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar told the ICC, “The moments are what matters in big games.” He also described the occasion as “one more international game” for his team, adding, “And it’s for Asian Games Gold. So that’s the importance of the game.”
