For a teenager, a safer alternative to ChatGPT depends on what they need: use educational websites for learning, offline activities for creative expression, and a trusted adult or qualified professional for emotional or mental-health support. If a teen uses a chatbot for homework or creative work, agree on the purpose, check its actual settings together, and make sure it helps them learn rather than simply finish.
Choose an alternative that fits the need
There is no established universal safety ranking for teen chatbots. “Safer” is best considered in relation to a particular task, the teenager’s age, adult involvement, and what a tool’s safeguards actually do. Common Sense Media’s age-stage guidance recommends alternatives to chatbots for several common needs.
| Need | Option to consider | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Learning and age-appropriate information | National Geographic Kids, Britannica Kids, or Common Sense Media Selections | Common Sense Media names these as educational website alternatives. They are not necessarily conversational AI tools. Common Sense Media’s age-by-age guide. |
| Homework support or creative projects | Supervised chatbot use, with a clear task and adult discussion | Check whether the teen is learning, verify information, and review the controls rather than assuming a teen label means a parent can monitor chats. OpenAI’s parental-controls description. |
| Emotional support, mental-health concerns, or difficult personal issues | A trusted adult, family member, school counselor, or age-appropriate therapy | Common Sense Media advises human support; chatbots can miss warning signs or delay reaching someone who can help. Common Sense Media’s guidance. |
| Creative expression | Art supplies, a writing journal, or music lessons | These are non-chatbot options suggested by Common Sense Media. Common Sense Media’s guidance. |
| Companionship | Do not substitute a social AI companion for ChatGPT | Common Sense Media recommends no AI companionship for anyone under 18, citing risks including harmful advice, emotional dependency, and bots presenting themselves as real or sentient. How to use a chatbot for learning without outsourcing the work
For a teen who does use a chatbot for schoolwork, the useful test is: “Is this AI helping me learn, or just helping me finish?” Common Sense Media suggests starting with what the student has already figured out, asking where they disagree with an answer, and having them explain how they checked it.

- Set the task first: for example, request an explanation of a concept, a quiz, or brainstorming—not a finished assignment to submit as the teen’s own work.
- Ask the teen to restate the answer in their own words and identify what they verified independently.
- Discuss what the chatbot got wrong, left out, or could not support.
- Keep the use supervised and discussed, rather than treating a tool’s teen-oriented features as a replacement for adult judgment.
The American Psychological Association’s CEO, Dr. Arthur C. Evans Jr., said in OpenAI’s December 18, 2025 Model Spec update that young people’s AI use should be supervised and discussed with trusted adults to encourage critical review and independent thinking. OpenAI’s Model Spec update.

What ChatGPT for Teens’ controls do—and do not do
OpenAI describes a teen experience that can include study-focused onboarding, study mode with hints and step-by-step guidance, quizzes when available, study hours, and reminders. Linked parents can set quiet hours. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of product features, not independent evidence that they make every interaction safe or improve learning.
Two limits are especially important: OpenAI says parents cannot read or monitor a teen’s conversations through parental controls, and study hours do not block access to ChatGPT. Study hours can direct eligible new chats into study mode. OpenAI also says eligible accounts receive the teen experience automatically and that age categorization can affect whether it is active. Review the current account settings together; do not infer what a control does from its name. OpenAI’s parental-controls page.

How to weigh current concerns about teen safeguards
OpenAI’s product descriptions and independent assessments answer different questions. A vendor page explains how a feature is intended to work; an assessment reports what its testers observed. Neither alone establishes how every teen’s conversations will go.
In an October 7, 2026 report, Axios described Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute testing of more than 4,000 prompts on accounts registered to users aged 13–17. According to Axios’s account of the findings, testers generally did not receive instructions facilitating suicide or self-harm, eating disorders, or sexual or romantic roleplay. They found the system less reliable at recognizing when outside help was needed: Common Sense Media reportedly said it missed more than one in four cases its testers judged to warrant crisis referral. Testers on more than a dozen newly created, parent-linked accounts also reportedly discussed suicide, self-harm, or disordered eating for up to an hour without triggering a parental alert. These are reported findings attributed to the Institute, not a separately reanalyzed dataset. Axios’s October 7, 2026 report.

Axios also reported OpenAI’s objections: the company disputed whether the testing reflected how teen safeguards work in practice, said Study Hours are intentionally flexible rather than a hard parental lock, and described its crisis-resource display data and age-prediction approach. The disagreement matters: the Institute’s results should not be presented as settled consensus, and OpenAI’s response does not erase the reported test findings.

Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute rated Gemini with teen protections high risk in its September 5, 2025 assessment. It said Gemini could be useful for homework or creativity, but advised against using it for companionship, emotional support, or mental-health advice. The assessment reported that the system treated teenagers similarly despite age differences, could be inconsistent in longer or nuanced exchanges, and did not consistently recognize context from earlier in a conversation. These are the organization’s testing observations and recommendation, not proof that every interaction causes harm. Common Sense Media’s Gemini assessment.

Why a social AI companion is not a safer workaround
A chatbot built around a character or ongoing relationship is not automatically safer than a general-purpose assistant. In its April 30, 2025 release, Common Sense Media said age gates and terms-based teen restrictions—including teen-specific Character.AI guardrails—were easily circumvented in its assessments. It recommended no social AI companions for people under 18, citing harmful advice, emotional-dependency risks, and systems that could claim to be real or have emotions. This is Common Sense Media’s recommendation and assessment, not a claim that every teen interaction has the same outcome. Common Sense Media’s companion-app release.

When a person is the right alternative
For distress, self-harm concerns, mental-health symptoms, or a need for emotional support, involve a trusted adult and seek qualified human help appropriate to the situation. Common Sense Media warns that chatbots can miss warning signs and delay reaching a person who can help. A conversational tone is not a substitute for a counselor, clinician, or trusted adult who can understand the teen’s circumstances and respond.
Quick Recap
A short family check before choosing a tool
- Name the goal. Decide whether the teen needs learning support, creative inspiration, information, or human help. Do not use a companion bot or chatbot as a counselor.
- Check the actual settings together. Review the teen’s account and what parental controls do and do not permit; labels such as “teen,” “study,” or “safety” do not by themselves explain access or privacy.
- Agree on how learning will be checked. Have the teen explain the answer, identify what they confirmed, and point out any disagreement with the chatbot.
- Choose a non-chatbot alternative when it fits better. Use an educational site for age-appropriate research, an offline activity for creative practice, and a trusted person for personal or emotional concerns.
