Don’t run an AI agent under the Windows account you use every day. Give it a separate work area sized to the task: Windows Sandbox for work you can throw away, a persistent virtual machine when the work has to survive between sessions, or a separate standard Windows account when a virtual machine is more than the task needs. Each option narrows what the agent can reach. None of them is absolute protection, because the agent can still be manipulated by content it reads, and any shared folder, clipboard, device, or network connection can reconnect the isolated environment to your PC.
Why your main account is the wrong place for an agent
An AI agent reads text from web pages, documents, and interface elements, then acts on what it reads. Microsoft’s agentic security guidance names the core problem as cross-prompt injection (XPIA), in which “malicious content embedded in UI elements or documents can override agent instructions, leading to unintended actions like data exfiltration or malware installation.” (Microsoft Learn, Windows 11 security book, Agentic security)
Your main account holds nearly everything such an agent would want: documents, signed-in browser sessions, saved credentials, and permission to reach all of it. A separate boundary does not make the agent behave correctly. It limits the damage a misled agent can do.
Choose the boundary by the task
Two questions decide most cases. Does the work need to survive after the session ends? And how much of your host data, network access, and devices does the task really need? The table compares the four realistic options.

| Option | Best fit | Isolation boundary | Persistence | Setup effort | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Sandbox | Short, disposable tasks such as testing software or opening unfamiliar files | Separate kernel using hardware-based virtualization | Discarded on close; each new session starts fresh | Low, but apps must be installed inside the sandbox each time | Windows 10 and 11 Pro, Enterprise, Pro Education/SE, and Education; not Windows Home (Microsoft Learn, Windows Sandbox) |
| Persistent Hyper-V virtual machine | Work that needs installed tools, retained files, or repeated sessions | Full separate guest with its own configuration and software | Changes persist unless reverted | Higher; more resources and configuration than Sandbox (Microsoft Learn, Windows Sandbox FAQ) | Hyper-V is available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions, not Home |
| Separate standard Windows account | Lower-complexity tasks where per-user file permissions do the work | Separate user identity on the same Windows installation and kernel | The account’s profile persists | Moderate; you set folder permissions yourself | No virtualization needed |
| Microsoft agent account and workspace (Copilot Actions) | Windows 11 users who are eligible for preview features | Separate agent account, runtime isolation, and scoped permissions (Microsoft Learn, Agentic security) | Depends on the feature | Managed by Microsoft during preview | Preview for Windows Insiders in Copilot Labs; rollout varies (Microsoft Support, Experimental Agentic Features) |
Windows Sandbox: disposable by design, open by default
Windows Sandbox is a lightweight, isolated desktop for running untrusted software and opening unfamiliar files. Closing it removes the installed software, files, and state, and the next launch gives you a fresh instance. Only one Sandbox instance can run at a time, according to Microsoft’s documentation.
Confirm your edition first
Sandbox is not supported on Windows Home. If your PC runs Home, use a different boundary or upgrade to Windows 11 Pro, which is the route the official documentation supports for Sandbox on that machine. If your PC already runs Pro, Enterprise, or Education, you do not need new hardware or a new license to use it.

Know what the default configuration shares
Sandbox’s defaults are looser than most people expect. In Microsoft’s configuration documentation, networking is enabled and uses the Hyper-V default switch, clipboard redirection is enabled, and audio input is enabled. Video input and printer redirection are disabled, and Protected Client mode is disabled. (Microsoft Learn, Use and configure Windows Sandbox) Microsoft also warns that “Enabling networking can expose untrusted applications to the internal network.”

- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Open Notepad and paste the configuration shown below.
- Choose File, then Save As. Set Save as type to All files, name the file something like
agent-task.wsb, and save it to a folder you control. - Double-click the file to launch the Sandbox with those settings.
- Before you start the agent, confirm inside the Sandbox that the input folder is the only host location visible to it.

Use this as a starting point, not a finished policy. Disable networking only when the task does not need the internet, because an agent that must download packages or call a web service will fail without it. Keep the mapped folder read-only whenever the agent only needs to read input files.
Know what persists when the sandbox closes
Discarding the sandbox does not discard everything. Microsoft’s documentation states that “Changes made during a Sandbox session to a mapped folder with write-permissions will persist after a Sandbox is disposed.” Save only reviewed outputs to a deliberate location on the host. Microsoft also notes that the container account used for logon commands should be an administrator account, so do not put valuable credentials inside the Sandbox.

Persistent Hyper-V virtual machine: when the work must last
A virtual machine suits work that needs installed software, retained files, or repeated sessions. Microsoft’s Sandbox FAQ describes full virtual machines as more resource-intensive and more configurable, with changes persisting unless you revert them manually. (Microsoft Learn, Windows Sandbox FAQ, updated September 2025)
Hyper-V checkpoints give you the reset that Sandbox provides automatically. Take a checkpoint of a clean, configured guest before the agent starts, then revert to it when the task ends. Keep the guest’s browser profile and credentials separate from your host, and leave shared clipboard, drag-and-drop, folder sharing, and networking off unless the task requires them. Each of those paths is a route back to your host, and turning a feature off is the only reliable way to stop it.

The official material establishes a difference in lifecycle and setup, not a guarantee that every virtual machine is secure. The safety comes from how you configure the guest.
Separate standard account: a lighter boundary
A dedicated standard user account lets Windows’ per-user access controls keep the agent away from your files without a virtual machine. It is weaker than a separate virtualized kernel, because the account still lives inside your Windows installation.
- Open Settings, then Accounts, then Other users, and select Add account.
- Create a local account and set the account type to Standard user. Do not add it to the Administrators group.
- In File Explorer, right-click only the folder the agent needs, choose Properties, open the Security tab, and select Edit to grant that account access.
- Confirm that your personal folders such as Documents, Desktop, and Downloads do not list the agent account as a permitted user.
Verify these steps against Microsoft’s current Windows account documentation before you rely on them, since permission dialogs change between Windows releases. Microsoft’s agentic design uses the same principles, with distinct standard agent accounts and explicitly granted resource access. (Microsoft Learn, Agentic security)
Microsoft’s agent accounts and workspaces: watch them, don’t depend on them yet
Microsoft’s agentic features use a separate agent account, runtime isolation, and scoped access. Microsoft Support’s Experimental Agentic Features article, which I’d treat as the authority on current availability, describes the setting as a preview, with Copilot Actions available to Windows Insiders in Copilot Labs. It describes user monitoring, takeover, and scoped access to selected known folders. Eligibility and build availability vary, so check that page before you plan around it. Quick Recap
Choosing quickly
- Short, one-off task on Pro or Enterprise: Windows Sandbox with networking off and read-only input folders.
- Task that needs installed tools or a state you will keep: a Hyper-V virtual machine with a clean checkpoint.
- Simple file-processing task on Windows Home or a PC without Hyper-V: a standard account limited to one folder.
- Anything that needs your signed-in accounts or credentials: keep those out of every option above.
