A safari flight carrying 30 people made a gear-up emergency landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania on Sunday, October 4, 2026, after reportedly hitting a zebra while taking off from Seronera Airstrip in the Serengeti. The zebra died. Reports say all 26 passengers and four crew members were uninjured. Whether the zebra strike caused the landing-gear problem had not been confirmed in the coverage available as of October 7, 2026.
What happened, step by step
- Departure from Seronera. The aircraft took off from Seronera Airstrip in Serengeti National Park. Contemporaneous reports say it was headed for Zanzibar.
- Wildlife strike. During the takeoff, the aircraft reportedly struck a zebra on the airstrip. The animal died at the scene.
- Landing-gear problem. The crew reported an issue with the landing gear after the strike.
- Diversion to Kilimanjaro. The crew diverted to Kilimanjaro International Airport, where the plane landed with its gear retracted, commonly called a belly landing.
- Outcome. Reports say none of the 30 occupants was injured. Operations at Kilimanjaro airport were reportedly suspended temporarily. The coverage reviewed does not say how long the suspension lasted.

Was it really a “crash landing”?
Headlines have used “crash-land,” but the reported facts describe a forced or emergency gear-up landing in which everyone walked away unhurt. It was not a fatal crash. The wording matters if you are searching for the story: “plane belly-lands at Kilimanjaro” and “emergency landing after zebra collision” describe the same event.
Did the zebra strike cause the landing-gear failure?
That is not established. Reports say the crew flagged a gear problem after the strike, and an investigation was reported to be underway. They explicitly said investigators had not confirmed a link. The coverage reviewed includes no primary statement or final findings from Tanzanian aviation authorities, so the investigation’s current status is unverified. Treat any claim that the zebra collision damaged the gear as a plausible hypothesis, not a finding.

- One report identified the aircraft as an Embraer EMB-120ER Brasilia, registration 5H-HLL, and attributed the flight to Sindbard Air.
- Another report cited Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) registry information that lists Angelic Handlers Company Limited in the operator field and South Sudan’s Ministry of Interior as the owner.
As reported, these records do not settle which company marketed or actually operated this particular service. A brand that sells a flight, a registered operator and an aircraft owner can be three different parties, and the discrepancy may have an ordinary explanation such as a charter or wet-lease arrangement. Nothing in the reporting confirms that, so no single operator should be treated as definitively responsible until authorities clarify.

- The official cause of the landing-gear problem and the findings of any investigation.
- The extent of damage to the aircraft.
- How long Kilimanjaro airport operations were suspended.
- Which entity operated the flight.
No named official was quoted in the coverage reviewed, so none is cited here. These points are volatile, and later statements from Tanzanian aviation authorities may change the picture.
