To watch a web video in Picture in Picture (PiP) in Safari, start playing it, click the Page menu button in the Smart Search field, then choose Enter Picture in Picture. The video opens in a movable window that stays above your other windows.
Enter Picture in Picture from Safari’s Page menu

Open Safari and go to the webpage with the video.

Start playing the video. Safari’s documented workflow requires playback to begin before you enter PiP.

Click the Page menu button in Safari’s Smart Search field and select Enter Picture in Picture. Apple documents this as the standard way to start PiP. Apple’s Safari for Mac guide

Drag the floating window to a screen corner or resize it to fit your workspace. It remains visible over other windows and stays in place when you switch desktop spaces.

Move, control, or return the video
Use the PiP window’s controls to manage playback. On macOS Tahoe, Apple says the Page menu makes it easier to move a video into PiP, and PiP can offer skip-forward and skip-back controls. The Safari guide describes those skip controls as moving ten seconds. Skipping ads is available only where the site supports it; it is not guaranteed for every video.
Choose Restore in the PiP window to return the video to its original webpage and continue playback there. Closing the PiP window returns you to the page and pauses the video. For Tahoe’s feature details, see Apple’s All New Features macOS Tahoe guide, published in September 2025.

Use Safari Video Viewer as another route
Video Viewer fills the current Safari window with a video and hides the rest of the webpage. It is available only on pages with video that Safari’s Viewer can show.

Start the video, then open Safari’s Page menu and choose Video Viewer, if that option appears.

In Video Viewer, click the playback speed button and choose Picture in Picture. You can also enter PiP by clicking another window.

To leave Video Viewer, open the Page menu and exit it, or press Escape.

Look for a PiP button in the video player itself. Whether one appears depends on the webpage and its player controls; web developers can provide a custom PiP control and determine whether a video supports PiP. Apple describes these options in its Safari media controls developer guidance.

Try Video Viewer if its option appears in the Page menu. It is not available for every webpage video.

If the player exposes a context menu, a fallback described in a September 8, 2026 how-to is to Control-click or right-click the small volume icon on the playing tab and select Enter Picture in Picture. On YouTube, that how-to says to right-click once to open YouTube’s menu, then right-click again to reach the browser’s menu and choose PiP. These controls can change, so use Safari’s Page menu as the primary route. The Mac Observer’s fallback instructions

Is a Safari extension required?
No. Safari includes a built-in Page menu route, and Video Viewer or a player’s own PiP control may offer other ways in. If those options are not surfaced for an HTML5 video, PiPifier is an optional Safari extension; its App Store listing says it supports HTML5 videos and is free with in-app purchases. The listing instructs users to launch the extension, enable it in Safari’s extension settings, add its toolbar icon, interact with the video, and then click the icon. It is not required for Safari’s built-in PiP. PiPifier on the App Store
