When someone opens a record from a paginated SaaS table and returns, restore the table’s query, filters, sort order, page size, page or cursor, and useful scroll position. Treat these as one working view—not as a page number in isolation. Put safe, shareable state in the URL; keep private or short-lived details in application or browser-history state. When a new search or filter creates a different result set, reset pagination so the user does not land on an empty page.
What a table view needs to remember
Page three is not a complete description of a view: page three of overdue invoices is different from page three of all invoices. A reliable state model includes the conditions that determine the rows and how they are presented, as well as the location within them.
- Search query and filters
- Sort field and direction
- Page size
- Page number or cursor
- Useful position in the list, such as scroll position, when returning from a record
Keep the controls, URL, requested data, and displayed rows consistent. If one says “page 3” while another shows results for page 2, the restored view is misleading.

Use the URL for safe, shareable state
When a view should survive reloads, work on direct navigation, or be shareable, encode its non-sensitive state in URL search parameters. Shopify’s Hydrogen pagination guidance describes URL-based pagination as a way to share a list URL and return to the same scrolled position. Shopify’s pagination migration guidance recommends keeping cursor, direction, search, filters, and sort together in search parameters for restorable views.

Validate a numbered page against the available range on the server, and make sure the rows shown match both the URL and the query sent to the data source. Do not put access tokens, confidential customer information, or private search terms in a link: URLs can be shared and remain in browser history.
Use history or application state for transient details
Exact scroll position and selected-row state may be useful on return without belonging in a shareable URL. Store these details in a suitable application or history state, and define how long they remain valid.

In a single-page application, the browser History API supports the navigation model. MDN explains that pushState() adds an entry to session history and can associate serializable state with it; popstate provides the stored state when the user traverses back or forward. replaceState() updates the current entry rather than adding another step. Decide which interactions merit a new Back-button step, then keep the URL, history state, and rendered table aligned. See MDN’s pushState() documentation.

Coordinate scroll restoration
Browsers can restore scroll automatically or leave restoration to the application. MDN documents history.scrollRestoration values of auto and manual. If the application takes over scrolling, define when restoration occurs and wait until the table content and layout are ready; otherwise the browser and app can compete or scroll to a position that no longer corresponds to the rows. Handle a return differently from a new search
Returning to an existing view
On return from a record, restore the saved view rules and refresh the data. The exact same records cannot be guaranteed: rows may have been deleted, changed, or moved while the person was away. If the saved page is now beyond the available range, move to the last valid page and explain why. If the record no longer matches the active filter, say so briefly rather than leaving the person to infer what happened.
Starting a different result set
A changed search or filter is not a return to the same view. Reset the page or cursor when a new result set is created; otherwise a previously high page number can show an empty table even though matching results exist earlier. Keep the newly chosen filter visible and communicate the updated result state. Distinguish a valid empty result from a request error.

Make asynchronous updates safe
Pagination requests can overlap. While a request is in progress, preserve the existing rows or show a deliberate loading state, and prevent accidental duplicate requests. Ensure that an older, slower response cannot overwrite a newer view. Shopify’s migration guide calls out slow, failed, duplicate, and out-of-order requests as cases to check.
Keep pagination accessible after restoration
Give the pagination navigation landmark an accessible name, especially when a page has multiple navigation regions, and mark the current page with aria-current="page". The W3C Design System pagination example demonstrates both. Use specific, visible control names and check keyboard focus during navigation. After restoring a view, keep loading feedback and pagination controls understandable; avoid moving focus on every background refresh, and move it only when necessary to keep the person oriented.

Check the behavior end to end
- Choose a filter and sort order, move beyond page one, and open a record.
- Use the browser Back control. Confirm that filters, sort, page size, page or cursor, and useful list position return together.
- Repeat with the application’s return-to-list link.
- Reload the shareable URL and open it directly. Confirm the defined refresh behavior.
- Remove enough matching records to invalidate the former last page. Check that the table recovers to a valid location and explains the change.
- Test keyboard navigation, loading feedback, and the smallest supported screen.
- Exercise slow and failed requests, duplicate actions, out-of-order responses, and changes to filters.
Verify framework restoration instead of assuming it
Framework state features may restore only part of a table view. For example, SAPUI5 version 1.96 documentation says its general app-state mechanism restores list-report filter values, but does not store or restore changes to a chart or table, scroll position, or selections. It also notes that refresh restoration depends on launchpad backend persistence. Check the exact framework version and persistence setup in use: “state restoration” does not necessarily mean that rows, filters, selections, and scroll position all return.
