An early attempt to delid a Ryzen 9000 processor ended with a cracked Zen 5 I/O die and a destroyed CPU, according to Tom’s Hardware’s report of 7 August 2024. The incident illustrates the mechanical risk of removing a soldered heat spreader; it does not establish that every delidding attempt will fail. Delidding also compromises AMD warranty coverage for damage caused by alteration or improper testing.

What happened in the Ryzen 9000 delidding incident?

Tom’s Hardware reported on 7 August 2024 that overclocker Tony Yu’s early attempt to remove the integrated heat spreader (IHS) from a Ryzen 9000 processor failed. Photos showed a cracked Zen 5 I/O die, with an unclean break and material still attached at solder points. The report characterized the processor as destroyed, not cosmetically damaged.

The reported outcome is a specific failure, not evidence that every Ryzen 9000 CPU will crack if delidded. It does show that a mistake during removal can cause damage severe enough to make the processor unusable.

Why is delidding a Ryzen 9000 mechanically risky?

Ryzen 9000 uses solder between the IHS and the processor package. Solder conducts heat well, but its bond makes removal mechanically demanding. Tom’s Hardware’s account says a soldered chip requires excellent care and work to survive delidding. The incident report does not establish a single precise cause for the crack, so it is not possible to attribute the failure to one specific tool or step.

AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
  • Cooler not included

Because the stock soldered interface already provides better thermal conductivity than typical thermal paste, delidding is not an automatic upgrade for an ordinary user. The potential thermal benefit has to justify the chance of damaging the CPU and the need for suitable direct-die cooling.

What can each Ryzen 9000 cooling route deliver?

The evidence differs by route: the failed DIY attempt was an early Ryzen 9000 incident, while the measured temperature and performance gains below come from a later test of a 9950X3D. They are not directly comparable results from the same CPU or test setup.

Route Mechanical failure risk Warranty Temperature and performance evidence Direct-die hardware Cost
DIY delidding High consequence if removal goes wrong: the 2024 incident ended with a cracked I/O die and destroyed CPU. The available report does not quantify the odds of failure. AMD says physical damage from alteration or improper testing invalidates its Limited Warranty. A DIY-delidded CPU should not be treated as retaining normal AMD warranty protection. No general DIY result is established. The 2024 incident is a failure report, not a cooling-performance test. Requires a compatible direct-die cooling arrangement; the incident report does not specify a complete parts list. Not stated in the cited incident report.
Professionally delidded CPU Specialist removal and function testing can reduce uncertainty about the completed work, but do not establish that risk is zero. Thermal Grizzly describes its TG Delidded CPU as cleaned and function-tested with a test protocol. Thermal Grizzly provides its own warranty, while stating that delidding voids the manufacturer warranty. It warns that using the original AMD heatspreader with its product voids its warranty too. Tom’s Hardware reported a separate Der8auer 9950X3D comparison in 2025: up to 23 °C lower load temperature at stock settings; in a higher-power configuration, up to 9% better Cinebench R23 multi-thread performance alongside a 73% power increase. These are results from one test setup, not guaranteed outcomes for other CPUs. Thermal Grizzly lists its Mycro Direct-Die Pro block, TG Kapton Insulation Sheet, TG Shield and Conductonaut liquid metal among related products. Its product page warns that a height mismatch can damage the CPU. Not stated in the cited Thermal Grizzly product information.
Leave the stock package intact Avoids the mechanical risk introduced by removing the IHS. AMD states that boxed processors are covered for three years when properly installed and used, subject to the warranty terms. This is the stated boxed-CPU period, not a promise of coverage for every failure. The stock soldered interface is described as having better thermal conductivity than typical paste. No stock-versus-delidded temperature figure is established here for the same CPU and test conditions. No direct-die hardware is needed. Not stated in the cited sources.

Does delidding void the AMD warranty?

AMD’s warranty guidance says it is not liable when, in its reasonable opinion after testing and examination, a defect or malfunction was caused by misuse, neglect, improper installation or testing. Its examples of damage not covered include “Chips and Cracks.” AMD’s physical-damage FAQ says damage from “alteration, repair, improper installation, or improper testing” invalidates the AMD Limited Warranty. Removing the IHS is an alteration, and a cracked die is physical damage; a delidded CPU should therefore not be assumed to remain covered by AMD’s warranty.

AMD states that boxed processors have a three-year warranty period when properly installed and used, subject to the warranty terms. That period does not override the exclusions for alteration or physical damage.

Is direct-die cooling worth the risk?

It depends on whether a specific, measured thermal or performance goal is worth risking an expensive processor and changing its warranty position. The 9950X3D comparison demonstrates that delidding can produce a substantial temperature reduction in one test. Its higher-power result also shows the tradeoff: the reported 9% multi-thread performance uplift came with 73% higher power consumption. Neither figure should be treated as a guaranteed result for every Ryzen 9000 CPU, cooler, or workload.

  • For most users: Leave the stock package intact. The soldered interface is already thermally effective, and avoiding removal preserves the CPU from this particular mechanical hazard.
  • For experienced enthusiasts: Consider delidding only when the expected gain matters for a defined use, and account for direct-die cooling, insulation, fit and warranty consequences as part of the project.
  • For anyone seeking a lower-risk delidded route: A professionally delidded, tested CPU offers documented function testing and a separate seller warranty, but it does not restore AMD’s manufacturer warranty. Follow the seller’s installation requirements exactly.

What to check before buying or installing a delidded CPU

  • Confirm the exact processor and direct-die cooler compatibility rather than assuming that a block fits every Ryzen 9000 model.
  • Check the seller’s instructions for required insulation and liquid-metal handling.
  • Do not reinstall the stock AMD heatspreader on Thermal Grizzly’s TG Delidded CPU: the company says it must never be used with that product and warns that doing so voids its warranty.
  • Verify the processor’s height and mounting fit. Thermal Grizzly warns that a height mismatch can damage the CPU.
  • Read the seller’s warranty terms and distinguish them from AMD’s warranty; a third-party warranty does not reinstate AMD coverage.
