For a gaming-first PC, choose the Ryzen 7 9800X3D if it costs meaningfully less where you shop: in Tom’s Hardware’s tested 1080p game suite, it was 0.4% faster on average than the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, a result the review treats as a tie. Pay extra for the 9950X3D when your PC will also handle demanding, well-parallelized work such as rendering or encoding; its 16 cores and 32 threads give it twice the core and thread count of the 9800X3D.
What separates these two X3D processors?
Both are Zen 5 desktop processors for AMD’s AM5 platform, and both use 3D V-Cache. The practical difference is scale: the Ryzen 9 9950X3D has twice as many cores and threads, while the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the less expensive gaming-focused option when local pricing makes it so.

Specifications are from AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 7 9800X3D product pages. The TDP figures are processor ratings, not measurements of total PC power use. Clock speed and cache totals alone do not determine which chip will be faster in a particular game or application.

Which is faster for gaming?
In Tom’s Hardware’s full 1080p game suite, the 9800X3D averaged 0.4% ahead of the 9950X3D. The review describes that difference as effectively a tie, not a meaningful gaming win. The result applies to that review’s games, settings, hardware and test method; it is not a guarantee for every title, resolution or system. See the Tom’s Hardware head-to-head for its test context.
#1 Best Overall
- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Gaming and Content Creation Processor
- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
That makes the 9800X3D the sensible gaming purchase when it is substantially cheaper. You are not giving up a demonstrated broad gaming advantage by declining the 9950X3D. Compare results at the resolution and in the games you actually play: differences can depend on the GPU, settings and whether a title benefits from the specific CPU configuration.
When does the 9950X3D earn its premium?
Its clearest advantage is work that can keep many CPU cores busy. With 16 cores and 32 threads, the 9950X3D is better suited to heavy multithreaded tasks—such as CPU rendering, compiling or encoding—while also serving as a high-end gaming processor. If that work is a regular part of your use, the extra capacity can matter more than a near-tie in gaming.

- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition
Do not read isolated single-core results as proof of a twofold productivity gain. In Tom’s Hardware’s comparison, the 9950X3D led by 4.7% in Cinebench 2024 single-core and 7.6% in POV-Ray single-core. Those are named single-core test results; they do not describe multithreaded scaling. The broader reason to consider the 9950X3D for production is its doubled core and thread count, but the benefit depends on whether your particular software can use those resources.

Treat this as an independent reviewer’s assessment, not a universal rule for every workload.

- The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended
How should you compare prices?
Published comparison pages show different price snapshots, and neither should be treated as a live offer. Tom’s Hardware lists $670 for the 9950X3D and $470 for the 9800X3D in its head-to-head, while another Tom’s Hardware review table lists $699 and $480, respectively. The variation is a reminder to check current prices at your own retailers rather than deciding from an old page figure. GamersNexus cites a $700 original MSRP for the 9950X3D; that is a launch-price reference, not a current street price.
Compare the actual CPU price gap with the value you expect from your own work. If gaming is nearly all you do, paying substantially more for the 9950X3D buys core capacity that may not improve your game performance. If demanding multithreaded work is frequent and time-sensitive, the premium may be justified. Include any additional cooling cost in the build comparison.

What should you check before buying?
- Motherboard and BIOS: Both processors use AM5, but if you are reusing a motherboard, confirm its exact CPU support and required BIOS version with the board maker.
- Memory: Both use a DDR5 platform, so a DDR5-compatible motherboard and memory are required.
- Cooling: AMD says the 9950X3D does not include a thermal solution and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. Plan for a compatible cooler and account for its cost; the recommendation is not a claim that every system must use the same cooler.
- Workload: Check whether your specific production applications scale across many cores. A software workload that does not use the extra cores may not justify the larger CPU.
- Whole-system budget: Compare the cost of the processor, suitable cooling and any platform changes—not only the CPU’s listed price.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for a primarily gaming PC when it is meaningfully cheaper locally. In the cited 1080p suite, it effectively tied the 9950X3D.
- Choose the Ryzen 9 9950X3D if you regularly combine gaming with demanding multithreaded production work and your software benefits from its 16 cores and 32 threads.
- Reconsider the price gap if the 9800X3D is unusually expensive or the 9950X3D is discounted. Current local pricing can change which one offers better value.
