For a gaming-first PC, choose the Ryzen 7 9800X3D if its price fits your budget: TechSpot measured a 30% average gaming-performance lead over the Ryzen 7 9700X in its test suite. That is not a guaranteed uplift in every game or system. For productivity, the available comparison does not establish a winner; choose based on your specific applications, current local prices, power needs, and cooling budget.

Gaming performance: the 9800X3D leads in TechSpot’s tests

TechSpot’s review found the Ryzen 7 9800X3D averaged 30% higher gaming performance than the Ryzen 7 9700X across the games it tested. Individual results varied considerably:

Game 9800X3D advantage over 9700X
Star Wars Outlaws 10%
Counter-Strike 2 27%
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty 35%
Assetto Corsa Competizione 45%

These are results from TechSpot’s 2024 review, not a promise of the same frame-rate difference with every GPU, resolution, game version, or PC configuration. A CPU difference is most relevant in CPU-limited situations, such as targeting high frame rates; when a game is GPU-limited, the graphics card can constrain performance and narrow the visible gap.

Productivity: choose for your actual workload

The gaming comparison does not establish which processor is faster for productivity. Both are Zen 5 desktop CPUs with 8 cores and 16 threads, but the gaming results alone cannot show how they compare in rendering, compiling, encoding, or other applications. Look for benchmarks of the particular programs and tasks you use before paying extra on the assumption that one is the better productivity CPU.

AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
  • Cooler not included

The 9700X’s lower default TDP may suit a build where power and cooling are priorities, while the 9800X3D is the gaming-oriented choice supported by the cited game testing. Neither distinction is a substitute for workload-specific productivity results.

Price, power, and cooling affect the real build cost

AMD’s US store listed the 9800X3D at $479 and out of stock when checked on October 4, 2026. That dated US-store snapshot is not a current street-price comparison. A reliable current 9700X price for every reader’s market is not established here, so compare live local prices before making a cost-per-frame or value judgment.

AMD says neither processor includes a thermal solution and recommends a premium air cooler for optimal 9700X performance. Include a compatible CPU cooler in the total build budget and check that it fits your case and motherboard; no particular cooler or case configuration is established as suitable here.

Check AM5 motherboard and BIOS compatibility

The 9700X uses AMD’s AM5 platform. AMD names A620, B650/B650E, X670/X670E, X870/X870E, B840, and B850 among supported chipsets. Chipset support alone does not guarantee that a specific board will run a CPU with its installed firmware: check the exact motherboard model’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before buying.

  1. Identify the exact motherboard model and hardware revision.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s CPU support list and confirm the processor is listed.
  3. Check the listed minimum BIOS version and whether the board can update its BIOS without an already supported CPU, if an update is needed.

Consider the Ryzen 7 9700X when power or budget matters more

Its 65W default TDP is lower than the 9800X3D’s 120W, and its actual purchase price may make it more attractive in some markets. Verify current prices and cooler costs rather than assuming it is the better value. For productivity-heavy use, compare results for your own applications before choosing either CPU on performance grounds.

Keep the 7800X3D comparison separate

AMD’s October 31, 2024 launch release reported approximately 8% average FPS uplift for the 9800X3D over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D based on AMD’s testing. That is a manufacturer figure for a different comparison; it is not the TechSpot 30% result against the 9700X. AMD senior vice president and general manager of Computing and Graphics Jack Huynh described the launch as “elevating gaming performance like never before”—an AMD launch statement, not an independent assessment. AMD’s October 31, 2024 launch release contains that comparison.
