Disabling one CCD on a Ryzen 9 7950X3D can provide a useful preview of how a single-CCD gaming configuration performs—but it does not turn the 7950X3D into a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. In TechSpot’s BIOS-based simulation, game results varied sharply: Factorio improved by almost 80%, while other titles showed modest gains, little change, or lower performance. Treat the results as workload-specific evidence, not a promise that disabling a CCD improves every game.

What does “7950X3D with one CCD disabled” mean?

A CCD is a processor chiplet containing CPU cores. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D has two CCDs; one includes 3D V-Cache, while the other does not. TechSpot disabled the second CCD in the BIOS for part of its 7950X3D review and labeled that configuration “7800X3D [Simulated].” It is a test stand-in that limits the active configuration to one CCD, not a retail 7800X3D under another name.

The actual Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a separate eight-core, single-CCD processor. The 7950X3D remains a 16-core product physically, and disabling a CCD changes its active configuration. The simulation can help isolate how performance behaves with one CCD available, but it cannot establish that the two processors are identical in clock, power, or all other behavior.

What did the simulation show in games?

TechSpot found that the effect depended on the game. Factorio produced an almost 80% performance increase in its disabled-CCD configuration, a result specific to that workload and test. In other games, the simulation showed more modest gains, no meaningful change, or lower performance. The Factorio figure should not be treated as an expected uplift in other games.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • Processor provides dependable and fast execution of tasks with maximum efficiency.Graphics Frequency : 2200 MHZ.Number of CPU Cores : 8. Maximum Operating Temperature (Tjmax) : 89°C.
  • Ryzen 7 product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency
  • 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
  • Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
  • 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance

TechSpot’s average for the simulated configuration was a prediction for the then-unreviewed 7800X3D, not an average from testing a retail 7800X3D. Benchmark choices, game versions, settings, platform components, and software behavior all affect comparisons, so the simulation is most useful as an illustration of variation—not a universal performance forecast.

Why can the 7950X3D behave differently from a single-CCD CPU?

The 7950X3D’s two CCDs have different cache characteristics. Its mixed-CCD setup relies on software scheduling to send games to the cache-equipped CCD. TechSpot’s later review of the actual 7800X3D noted that this scheduling behavior can fail in some cases. Disabling the other CCD changes the available configuration, which can make a simulation informative, but it does not show how every game or system will behave with normal scheduling enabled.

AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
  • 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
  • 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
  • Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
  • Cooler not included

Results also depend on the GPU, resolution, memory, firmware, drivers, operating system, and game version. A CPU comparison made at a low resolution with a high-end graphics card can emphasize CPU differences; a different setup or workload may produce a different ranking. No single review suite settles performance across all games or current systems.

How did the retail 7800X3D compare in TechSpot’s review?

In its later review of the actual 7800X3D, TechSpot used a 12-game average with an RTX 4090 at 1080p. In that specific suite, the 7800X3D roughly matched the 7950X3D and was about 3% faster than the Intel Core i9-13900K. Those are historical results from TechSpot’s stated test configuration, not current, universal rankings or a guarantee for another selection of games.

When is this comparison useful?

  • For interpreting a benchmark: The disabled-CCD result shows how a constrained 7950X3D configuration performed in the tested workloads; it is not a direct retail 7800X3D measurement.
  • For choosing a gaming CPU: Give more weight to reviews that test the actual 7800X3D across games relevant to you, and check individual results as well as averages.
  • For mixed gaming and productivity: Remember that the 7950X3D retains its two-CCD, 16-core capability when operating normally. A one-CCD simulation does not describe its full productivity performance.
