The Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X pair AMD’s Zen 5 desktop architecture with a 65W rated TDP, but that rating is not a hard limit on power draw. The 9600X is the lower-cost six-core option; the 9700X adds two cores and a small boost-clock increase. Tom’s Hardware found the chips performed well while drawing less power than the Intel processors in its Pi-BBP AVX-512 test, but that result applies to that workload—not every game or application.
How the Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X compare
AMD’s July 2024 consumer guide lists both processors at 65W TDP. The 9700X has two more cores and threads, a 100 MHz higher maximum boost clock, and 2 MB more combined cache. The launch suggested prices below are historical figures cited by HotHardware in 2024, not current street prices.
| Processor | Cores / threads | Max boost | Combined cache | Rated TDP | Launch suggested price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 5 9600X | 6 / 12 | Up to 5.4 GHz | 38 MB | 65W | $279 (HotHardware, 2024) |
| Ryzen 7 9700X | 8 / 16 | Up to 5.5 GHz | 40 MB | 65W | $359 (HotHardware, 2024) |

What 65W TDP means—and what it does not
TDP is the processors’ rated thermal design power, not a promise that package power will never exceed 65W. Tom’s Hardware lists the 9600X at 65W TDP and 88W PPT. PPT is a separate power metric, so the 88W figure does not contradict the 65W rating. In the same comparison, the prior Ryzen 5 7600X is listed at 105W TDP and 142W PPT.
#1 Best Overall
- Pure gaming performance with smooth 100+ FPS in the world's most popular games
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 38 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included
That lower TDP is part of the 9600X’s launch positioning, but it should not be read as an exact measurement of power use in every workload. For the power figures and review context, see Tom’s Hardware’s joint 9600X and 9700X review.
What the power and thermal results show
In Tom’s Hardware’s Pi-BBP AVX-512 test, the 9600X and 9700X performed well while drawing less power than the Intel processors in that comparison. This is evidence about one specific AVX-512 workload and test setup; it does not establish that either Ryzen chip uses less power or runs cooler in every application, game, or system configuration. Tom’s Hardware’s power-consumption and thermals page describes that test.

The available review evidence does not establish a universal efficiency winner between the 9600X and 9700X. The extra cores in the 9700X may matter for a reader’s workload, but the figures here do not quantify a general performance-per-watt advantage for either model.

Choose the 9600X if
- You want a six-core, 12-thread Zen 5 processor and do not have a specific need for the 9700X’s two additional cores.
- Its current price in your region is meaningfully lower than the 9700X’s.
Consider the 9700X if
- Your workloads can benefit from eight cores and 16 threads.
- The price difference is acceptable for your intended work and the extra core capacity is useful to you.
The 9700X’s specifications alone do not prove that it will deliver a particular gaming or productivity uplift. The evidence summarized here does not provide a complete, workload-by-workload head-to-head result, so compare benchmarks for the applications and games you actually use before paying more.

What to budget for in an AM5 build
Both are AM5 desktop processors. A new build needs a compatible AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. HotHardware reports that the retail boxes it reviewed did not include a heatsink, so check the specific product listing and budget for a suitable CPU cooler if one is not supplied. No particular motherboard, memory kit, or cooler was evaluated in the cited material.
BIOS support matters if you plan to use a processor power mode beyond its standard configuration. Tom’s Hardware reported on 3 September 2024 that a 105W mode option did virtually nothing to improve gaming frame rates in the tests it covered. At that time, the report said MSI was the only board vendor offering firmware with the option and anticipated wider availability through an AMD AGESA update. That is historical firmware context, not a statement about current support. Check the support page and BIOS notes for your exact motherboard model before relying on a mode being available. See Tom’s Hardware’s 105W-mode follow-up.
