Ryobi’s 18V battery platform dates to 1996, and the company says its later switch to lithium-ion kept that platform compatible. The green came later: Ryobi says it moved from navy blue to “hyper green” in 2008. That is a useful trade-off if you value keeping tools on one battery system—and a very visible one if you don’t like the color.
The battery system came first
Ryobi dates the launch of its 18V battery system to 1996, when it introduced a cordless drill powered by a nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery. The company’s US ONE+ timeline says it introduced lithium-ion technology in 2007 while maintaining compatibility with the ONE+ platform.
That history is the reason the battery decision matters more than the tool color: Ryobi presents ONE+ as a long-running system, not just a single generation of cordless tools. Its anniversary page says, “Every RYOBI® 18V battery works in every RYOBI® ONE+™ tool; past, present and future.” That is Ryobi’s compatibility claim; it should not be read as independent verification of every battery-and-tool combination.

Why the tools are green
According to Ryobi UK’s history page, the company moved from navy blue to “hyper green” in 2008. Ryobi says the change was intended to make its tools stand out from competitors. So the color is a deliberate part of the brand’s identity, not a side effect of the battery platform.

How broad is ONE+ today?
The platform’s scope varies by market and by how each page describes the range. Ryobi Tools Canada says one 18V ONE+ lithium battery powers 300+ tools. Ryobi UK describes more than 200 home and garden tools. These are separate company claims for different regional pages, not directly interchangeable counts.
Ryobi UK’s anniversary page also states that more than 100 million batteries have been sold worldwide since 1996. The page does not identify a distinct measurement date for that total, so it is best understood as the company’s stated lifetime figure rather than a milestone confirmed for a particular year.

The real trade-off: continuity versus color
If you already own compatible ONE+ tools, the platform’s appeal is practical: Ryobi says its 18V batteries span generations of ONE+ tools, so adding another tool need not mean adopting a separate battery system. If you dislike the green, the history offers no hidden color workaround—the distinctive finish is part of the line’s identity. The battery and the paint are separate decisions, even if the same tool forces you to live with both.
This history alone does not establish how ONE+ compares with other brands on battery performance, tool durability, price, or range. Those questions depend on the specific tools and batteries being considered, rather than on the longevity of Ryobi’s platform claim.
