An RX 9070 XT is specified with HDMI 2.1b, but AMD does not publish a maximum refresh rate for two HDMI displays or guarantee a 144 Hz plus 120 Hz pairing. First check whether Windows is duplicating the displays, then verify each monitor’s HDMI input, supported mode, cable path, and detection status.
Can the RX 9070 XT run two HDMI displays at 144 Hz and 120 Hz?
AMD lists HDMI 2.1b and DisplayPort 2.1a for the RX 9070 XT and confirms HDMI 4K support, but its product specifications do not state a dual-HDMI refresh-rate ceiling or guarantee this particular combination. The actual result depends on the card’s outputs and the capabilities of both monitors’ HDMI inputs and their connection paths. AMD’s RX 9070 XT specifications do not establish that two particular displays will operate at 144 Hz and 120 Hz simultaneously.
AMD also describes series-level display capability as “up to 8K 144Hz” in its February 28, 2025 RX 9000 Series announcement. That statement is not a guarantee for a specific pair of HDMI displays, resolutions, cables, or board-partner card.

Check whether Windows is extending or duplicating the displays
In extended desktop mode, AMD says each display can use a different resolution, refresh rate, and orientation. In duplicate mode, the displays share the highest common resolution and refresh rate, so a lower shared mode may be expected. AMD’s multi-display setup guidance explains the difference.

- Open Windows Settings > System > Display.
- Under the display arrangement controls, set the displays to Extend these displays if you want each screen to run independently, rather than Duplicate these displays.
- Select each display in turn and check its resolution and refresh-rate options. If the intended rate is missing, continue with the monitor and connection checks below.
Check detection, monitor inputs, and connection paths
Make sure both displays are detected
In Settings > System > Display, use Detect if a screen is absent. AMD advises confirming that the driver installed successfully and that the displays are connected to the graphics card, not to motherboard video outputs. AMD’s troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
Confirm each monitor’s HDMI input supports the target mode
Look up the exact monitor model’s documentation for the specific HDMI input being used and its supported resolution-and-refresh combinations. A panel’s advertised maximum refresh rate alone does not show that every input supports that mode. AMD notes that available display modes depend on the connection and directs users to check the monitor’s documentation. AMD’s Windows display settings guidance also notes that cables and adapters can affect which resolutions are available.

Isolate the cable or adapter
Check every cable and adapter in each display’s path against the intended mode. If the specifications are unclear, substituting a known-suitable certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is a reasonable isolation test—not a guaranteed fix. Change one connection at a time so you can tell whether the available mode changes.
What information is needed to identify the cause?
The reported 144 Hz and 120 Hz problem is an individual user report, not evidence of a general RX 9070 XT limitation or a verified fix. The report does not establish which component or setting caused the issue.

For a specific diagnosis, record the GPU board model and vendor, both monitor models and resolutions, which HDMI input each monitor uses, cable and adapter details, operating system and driver version, whether Windows is set to extend or duplicate, and what actually fails. For example, note whether a display is missing, falls back to a lower resolution or refresh rate, flickers, or causes a crash. Without those details, the cause cannot be assigned reliably.
