Russia’s new giant hangars at Ramenskoye airfield near Moscow could shelter strategic aircraft, including bombers—but that remains a plausible interpretation, not a confirmed plan. Satellite imagery reported in March 2026 showed large structures under construction; no available source confirms what will go inside or how much protection the buildings would provide.
What the satellite imagery showed
RBC-Ukraine reported on March 21, 2026, that imagery shared by AviVector and dated March 15–19 showed construction in the central and southern parts of Ramenskoye airfield. The central structures were reported to measure 110 by 77 meters. The southern area showed new aircraft parking pads. RBC-Ukraine’s report described the dimensions as large enough to accommodate strategic missile-carrying bombers.
A separate Russian technology outlet also described 110-by-77-meter structures at Ramenskoye, attributing the imagery to the Military Informant Telegram channel. Because it relied on that channel, its account is not an entirely independent confirmation of the measurements. The outlet’s report also said a model of a Tu-160 shelter had been shown to Defense Minister Andrei Belousov. It distinguished that model from a tent-like shelter concept presented in May 2025 as a quickly erected structure for weather protection. The earlier report does not establish that the new Ramenskoye buildings are the same design.
Which aircraft could the hangars hold?
The strongest aircraft-related possibility is that the structures are intended for strategic aviation. RBC-Ukraine reported Tu-160, Tu-95MS, and Tu-22M3 aircraft at Ramenskoye in March 2026. Its imagery-based account identified three Tu-160s, one Tu-95MS, and one Tu-22M3 at the airfield, while noting that one Tu-160 had left or been relocated between March 18 and 19. Those figures describe observations from that period, not a current or independently verified inventory. RBC-Ukraine’s aircraft account provides that dated snapshot.

The reported aircraft presence and the structures’ reported dimensions make bomber shelters a reasonable possibility. They do not show that any particular aircraft will be assigned to a particular hangar. The available reporting does not confirm whether the buildings are intended for aircraft storage, maintenance, another aviation use, or a combination of purposes.
Would the structures protect aircraft from attack?
That depends on what “protect” means. RBC-Ukraine suggested that shelters could conceal aircraft from visual observation and help shield them from shrapnel. Concealment and resistance to a weapon’s effects are different claims: a roof and walls may obstruct an observer’s view without being engineered to withstand a direct strike. The cited coverage supplies no verified defensive rating or engineering assessment for the Ramenskoye structures.

Developments at other airfields offer context, not proof of Ramenskoye’s purpose or protection level. In June 2026, The War Zone reported at least 17 apparent bomber-sized shelters under construction at Engels Air Base based on Planet Labs imagery dated June 20. It said such shelters might offer some protection against smaller drones and obscure aircraft from observers, while noting that their protective performance was unclear. That report concerns Engels, not Ramenskoye.
The Moscow Times reported on July 14, 2025, that imagery analyzed by the Institute for the Study of War showed defensive construction at Khalino and Saki after Operation Spider’s Web. Those sites provide further background on airfield defenses, but do not verify the mission or performance of the Moscow-area hangars.
