Kyiv’s bridges over the Dnipro River were reported to be standing on 3 October 2026. But a Ukrainska Pravda report summarizing The New York Times described damage and repeated strikes that could lead to closures if further attacks weakened bridge supports. A prolonged shutdown could complicate the movement of food and equipment into and across the city, as well as daily travel between its left and right banks.
What the report says happened
Ukrainska Pravda reported that, according to the NYT, six attacks targeted Kyiv bridges between 1 and 3 October 2026: five struck Pivdennyi (South) Bridge and one struck Pivnichnyi (North) Bridge. The NYT account said restrictions or a complete traffic halt affected five of Kyiv’s six road bridges. These are figures attributed to the NYT through Ukrainska Pravda, not independently verified counts.
Reported damage and traffic interruptions
The report said two drones struck near a support of Pivdennyi Bridge on 1 October. Road and metro traffic were halted while the structure was inspected. It also said the Kyiv City Military Administration reported damage on 2 October to a support, the road surface and concrete protection around metro tracks. Those details are reported updates, not an independent engineering assessment.

The account described concerns that further attacks could weaken supports and prompt longer closures; it did not report that a bridge had collapsed.

Why a prolonged closure could matter
Moving food and equipment
The bridges carry food and equipment across the Dnipro, according to the report. It said there are few alternative routes if crossings close for an extended period, forcing vehicles onto long detours. The NYT account put the nearest road bridge south of Kyiv at about 145 km away, or roughly two and a half hours by car. That is an attributed estimate; actual routes and travel times can change with conditions, and other downstream crossings were described as closer to the front and more vulnerable.
Everyday travel between the banks
The report also highlighted the effect on commuters. It attributed to the NYT an estimate that about one million people live on Kyiv’s predominantly residential left bank, while most government institutions and businesses are concentrated on the right bank. Restrictions across several bridges could therefore disrupt routine cross-river travel even without a total shutdown.

What the report says about Russia’s aims
Ukrainian officials and military experts cited by the NYT assessed the attacks as part of a campaign to damage Ukraine’s economy and its ability to sustain the war effort. That is an attributed interpretation of intent, not an independently established finding. The wider campaign described in the report also included attacks on warehouses, railways, data centres, medical facilities and steel plants.
What is known—and what remains uncertain
The reported picture is of standing bridges that had sustained damage and faced repeated attacks, alongside traffic restrictions and inspections. The risk discussed is that further damage could lead officials to close crossings for longer; the report does not establish that such a prolonged closure had occurred.
