An on-device AI face rater can turn a photograph into a number, but that number is the result of a particular measurement recipe—not an objective verdict on attractiveness. To understand what a score means, look at what the tool measures, how it converts measurements into a rating, how sensitive it is to the photo, and what data leaves your device.
What an AI face rater measures
Face-rating tools can use different methods, so there is no single formula behind an “AI face score.” One example with a published method is FaceRater. It says its browser-based tool uses Google MediaPipe to detect facial landmarks, then calculates two-dimensional ratios and alignments. MediaPipe detects landmarks; it does not provide a beauty score. FaceRater applies its own rubric to those detected points.
FaceRater’s disclosed beta formula
FaceRater says its experimental beta rubric weights paired-landmark reflection error at 50%, eye-width difference at 25%, and central landmark offset at 25%. It normalizes those errors and converts the weighted result using 10 × exp(−4 × weighted error), then rounds the score to one decimal place. A different tool could detect different features, use a trained prediction model, or map its measurements to a different scale. Raw scores from separate tools should not be compared unless their scales and validation populations are known to match.

Why the rating is not an objective verdict
FaceRater itself says its weights and scale are experimental choices and have not been validated as measures of attractiveness or against a representative population. That qualification matters: a numerical output can look precise without establishing that it measures a universal quality.
Machine learning can predict patterns in human ratings. A 2008 study reported a high correlation between its predictions and mean human attractiveness ratings, but that is evidence about predicting a particular rating signal—not proof that attractiveness has an objective, universal scale. Why the same face can receive different scores
A photograph is not a neutral measurement of a face. Camera distance, angle, expression, lighting, and occlusion can affect the visible geometry a tool detects. FaceRater lists these as factors that can change results, and its image checks do not guarantee a perfect input. FaceRater methodology

Expression can change model outputs
A 2024 study analyzed 840 frontal images from 40 female participants, with a mean age of 24.5, photographed in neutral and six expressive conditions. The researchers found that expression affected attractiveness scores. They concluded, “Facial expressions confound attractiveness scores.”

In that study, a CNN further trained on standardized images had a narrower score range across expressions—54.3–60.9, compared with 32.6–49.5 for the unconstrained model—and lower variance. Yet standardizing the model also shifted the ranking of expressions. These are study-specific results, not general accuracy figures for commercial apps; they show how model and training choices can affect results. Obwegeser et al., 2024
How to make a photo comparison more consistent
If you want to compare outputs, hold the photo conditions as steady as practical: use similar lighting, camera distance, angle, expression, and framing. A phone stand or tripod can help steady the framing, but it does not make the result scientifically validated. Even with matched photos, the score remains an output of the tool’s particular method.

What “on-device” means for photo privacy
“On-device” is a data-flow claim to verify, not a guarantee established by a label. Check separately whether a tool sends the original image, facial landmarks or other derived features, analytics data, or a paid-report request to a server—and whether it saves results locally in the browser.

FaceRater’s privacy policy says free browser scans do not send photos or full landmark maps to FaceRater or an AI service, and that results are saved in that browser. How to evaluate a face-rating tool
Before treating a score as meaningful, check what is actually measured and what is inferred. A disclosed formula makes a tool easier to scrutinize, but disclosure alone does not validate the measurement.

- Features: Does the tool identify landmarks or other visible measurements, or predict a rating from an image? Are those steps explained?
- Scoring and validation: Is the score formula disclosed? Does the vendor say whether it has been validated, and for which population or use?
- Repeatability: Does the score change when the same person is photographed under slightly different conditions? Compare only photos with similar pose, expression, distance, lighting, and framing.
- Data flow: Does the original image leave the device? Are landmarks or other derived features transmitted? What analytics are collected, what is stored locally, and how are optional reports processed?
- Comparison limits: Avoid comparing numbers across services unless their scales and validation populations are demonstrably compatible.
