The title promises a list of what a home-built scanner found in a real open-source SaaS. We could not access the original write-up in a form that shows the scanner’s name and version, the repository revision that was scanned, the settings used, or the findings themselves. This article therefore does not report specific findings from that run, and it does not credit the author with any feature, setting or result that cannot be checked.
What we can do is explain what a result from a run like this would need to show before it is worth trusting, what two documented local-first scanners say they do, and what a published study of open-source static-analysis tools does and does not establish.
What a scan result needs before it means anything
A count of warnings on its own tells a reader very little. A result becomes checkable only when it comes with the following details:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Repository and revision. The exact commit that was scanned, not just the project name. A SaaS repository changes daily, so a finding on one commit may already be fixed on the next.
- Tool name and version. Scanner rules change between releases, and a local build can differ from a published package.
- Enabled analyzers. A scanner may check dead code, complexity, security patterns, secrets, dependencies or configuration, and each produces different kinds of results. “The scanner found 40 issues” is not meaningful until you know which of these ran.
- Configuration and scope. Which directories were included, which were excluded, and which rules were turned on or off.
- Environment. The language runtime, dependency versions and operating system, where they affect the analysis.
- Validation. Whether each highlighted issue was read in its code context, reproduced, or confirmed by a test.
What “local-first” does and does not promise
“Local-first” describes where analysis runs. It does not by itself say whether a command sends code, file paths, metadata or telemetry anywhere. The two documented tools below show why the label is not enough.
#1 Best Overall
- CEL Doctor: The ANCEL AD310 is one of the best-selling OBD II scanners on the market and is recommended by Scotty Kilmer, a YouTuber and auto mechanic. It can easily determine the cause of the check engine light coming on. After repairing the vehicle's problems, it can quickly read and clear diagnostic trouble codes of emission system, read live data & hard memory data, view freeze frame, I/M monitor readiness and collect vehicle information
- Sturdy and Compact: Equipped with a 2.5 foot cable made of very thick, flexible insulation. It is important to have a sturdy scanner as it can easily fall to the ground when working in a car. The AD310 OBD2 scanner is a well-constructed mechanic tool with a sleek design. It weighs 12 ounces and measures 8.9 x 6.9 x 1.4 inches. Thanks to its compact design and light weight, transporting the device is not a problem. The buttons are clearly labelled and the screen is large and displays results clearly
- Accurate Fast and Easy to Use: The AD310 scanner can help you or your mechanic understand if your car is in good condition, provides exceptionally accurate and fast results, reads and clears engine trouble emission codes in seconds after you fixed the problem. This device will let you know immediately and fix the problem right away without any car knowledge. No need for batteries or a charger, get power directly from the OBDII Data Link Connector in your vehicle
- OBDII Protocols and Car Compatibility: Many cheap scan tools do not really support all OBD2 protocols. AD310 scanner as it can support all OBDII protocols such as KWP2000, J1850 VPW, ISO9141, J1850 PWM and CAN. This device also has extensive vehicle compatibility with 1996 US-based, 2000 EU-based and Asian cars, light trucks, SUVs, as well as newer OBD2 and CAN vehicles both domestic and foreign. Pls confirm with our customer service whether it is compatible with your vehicle before purchasing
- Home Necessity and Worthy to Own: This is an excellent code reader to travel or home with as it weighs less and it is compact in design. You can easily slide it in your backpack as you head to the garage, or put it on the dashboard, this will be a great fit for you. The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
Skylos describes itself as an open-source static-analysis command-line tool that runs locally by default. Its documentation separates its default dead-code scan from broader analyzer modes, and it notes that certain commands can query external services or upload data only when explicitly configured. In other words, the network behavior depends on the command you run and how you configure it.
Nyx documents a local-first security workflow with a local browser-based interface for triage and headless CI output in SARIF format. Its documentation, as reviewed for this article, does not give the same kind of per-command network breakdown, so readers should check its current docs and any telemetry settings directly.

How the two documented scanners compare
The scanner in the title is not named in the sources reviewed, so the comparison below uses two documented projects only to show which questions to ask. It is not a benchmark, and neither project’s accuracy has been independently measured here.

A fair comparison of any two scanners on the same codebase would look at the same evidence for each: reproducibility on a pinned revision, rule-level explanations, how false positives are handled, and whether findings were confirmed by someone other than the tool.
What a published study adds, and its limits
A group at Purdue University examined 24 open-source static-analysis tools applied to a dataset of 4,947 repositories. The study is organized around three questions: how easily and reliably the tools ran, what types and how many findings they produced, and how good those findings were. The paper is available at the Purdue study PDF.

Monitor ox- ygen sensors, fuel trims, coolant temperature, RPM, and more to spot suspicious values instantly. This obd scanner gives you professional-grade insight without the pro price tag—a feature you won’t find on basic $20 car code readers
Three cautions apply to its numbers:
- The study reports a 98.3% success rate for a tool it calls Omega Analyzer. That figure describes how often the analysis workflow completed, not how accurate the tool’s findings were.
- Part of the analysis was limited to repositories with fewer than 20 errors or warnings. The authors say this scope choice may bias results, so the figures should not be read as typical for large or heavily flagged projects.
- The accessible text of the PDF did not establish a publication year, so this article does not attach one to the figures.
The study is useful as context for how often static-analysis tools run cleanly across many projects. It does not predict how a particular scanner will perform on one SaaS codebase.
How to judge a single reported finding
A finding from any scanner is a lead to review, not a confirmed defect. Before it is reported as a problem, check each item:

- Record the rule identifier and the analyzer that produced it.
- Open the exact file and line at the scanned commit, and read the surrounding code.
- Decide whether the code path is reachable in the running application, not just present in the source.
- Assign severity based on that reachability and on what the code affects, not on the scanner’s label alone.
- Where possible, reproduce the issue with a test or a controlled input, and record the result.
- Mark the finding as confirmed, rejected or unresolved, with a short reason.
How to reproduce a scan on a fixed revision
If you want to check a scan of an open-source project, pin the work to a commit so others can repeat it:
- Clone the repository and check out a specific commit:
git clone <repository-url>, thengit checkout <commit-hash>. - Record the commit with
git rev-parse HEAD. - Install the scanner at a named version and record the output of its version command.
- Save the exact configuration file or command-line flags, and list which analyzers were enabled.
- Save the raw output in a machine-readable format, such as JSON or SARIF, alongside any summary.
- Run the scan twice on the same commit. If the results differ, note which findings changed before drawing conclusions.
A scan that meets these conditions can be repeated by a reader. A scan that does not can still be interesting, but its findings should be presented as the author’s observations rather than established facts about the project.
