RuneFest 2026 brought major news for both RuneScape games, including plans for a fourth RuneScape MMO, a broad 2027 roadmap, and Old School RuneScape updates. But one headline has already changed: Jagex says it is reevaluating RuneScape Reignited, so the fresh-start mode’s originally announced launch plan is not settled. The event took place at Birmingham’s NEC on October 3–4, with Pocket Gamer reporter Iwan Morris describing a packed, welcoming convention centered on fans and community.

What was announced at RuneFest 2026?

The biggest announcements spanned three different projects: a new RuneScape MMO that is still years from release, a 2027 content roadmap for the current RuneScape, and new content highlighted for Old School RuneScape. RuneScape Reignited also drew attention, but its status has since become uncertain.

At a glance

  • New MMO: Jagex announced a fourth RuneScape game, in early development and without a firm release date.
  • RuneScape: Jagex outlined three content arcs for 2027, alongside work aimed at helping new and returning players.
  • Old School RuneScape: Event coverage highlighted hardcore worlds, Menaphos, and the Fairytale III: Nexus of Power quest.
  • RuneScape Reignited: The fresh-start concept was presented at the summit, but Jagex’s current page says it is reevaluating the plan.

What is the fourth RuneScape MMO?

Jagex announced a fourth RuneScape MMO at RuneFest. “RS4” and “the fourth pillar” are working references, not a confirmed final title. GamesRadar+ reports that the project is being made in Unreal Engine and is intended to sit alongside the existing RuneScape games rather than replace them. It remains several years away, and the sources available do not establish a release year.

Jagex says it wants to involve players early by sharing ideas, testing, listening, and learning during development. That signals an intention to bring the community into the process; it is not a confirmed schedule or a promise about specific tests or features.

What is RuneScape Reignited, and what is its status?

At the summit, Jagex presented RuneScape Reignited as a fresh-start character type with its own economy and highscores, no paid progression, and ten days of access to members’ content. The original announcement said Reignited characters would occupy the same game worlds as existing characters, while keeping trading and Grand Exchanges separate between the two character types.

That was the event announcement, not the final current status. Jagex’s official Reignited page now says the plan is being reevaluated. Jagex had outlined a December 2 launch, but that date should not be treated as settled while the reevaluation is underway.

The idea prompted both excitement and concern, including worries about splitting the player base, GamesRadar+ reported. RuneScape creative director Ryan Philpott told GamesRadar+: “It’s been a privilege of my career to be able to steer the game back in the direction we think the game should have always been in.”

New-player guidance and plugins

Alongside the story arcs, Jagex outlined a remaster of the early-player journey and an optional Adventure Guide to help new and returning players find their bearings. The roadmap also announced a RuneScape plugins beta for October 6, initially listing Quest Helper, Menu Entry Swapper, Tilemarkers, Entity Hider, and Job Gauges. The announcement gives that beta date; it does not by itself confirm the beta’s subsequent rollout or availability.

What did Jagex announce for Old School RuneScape?

Pocket Gamer’s RuneFest recap highlighted three headline areas: hardcore worlds, Menaphos, and Fairytale III: Nexus of Power. It describes hardcore worlds as permadeath worlds where a character can move to regular play after dying.

The recap also mentions bosses including Ripgut and Gemstone Dragons, more dungeons, and quests adapted with Old School twists. These are the details established by the event coverage; it does not provide a complete implementation schedule for the Old School announcements.

What was RuneFest like in person?

Pocket Gamer reporter Iwan Morris described a packed convention hall where fans wore cosplay, displayed merchandise, and met people they had previously known online. He also observed Jagex developers and moderators circulating and helping attendees. Morris presented this as his experience of the event, not as a measured survey of attendees.

The official RuneFest description advertised two permanent stages, Skill Chip activities, a questing experience, cosplay and immersive sets, community events, and developer panels. Jagex announced the Birmingham NEC event for October 3–4, 2026, with capacity for 6,000 fans. Pocket Gamer later described “over 6000 attendees”; that is the reporter’s figure, distinct from the organizer’s stated capacity.
