To run PageSpeed Insights on hundreds of URLs and get one spreadsheet back, automate one PageSpeed Insights API request per URL, extract a consistent set of results, and write the rows to a spreadsheet in batches. Google documents a single URL as the input to the API’s runPagespeed method; the batch comes from your script or client, not a native bulk-URL request. A reliable workflow also records failures and distinguishes Lighthouse lab results from Chrome UX Report (CrUX) field data.
How the batch workflow works
The PageSpeed Insights (PSI) API returns structured analysis for the URL in its required url parameter. To process a list, your automation loops through the URLs, makes a request for each one, extracts selected fields, and writes one result row per input URL. See Google’s PageSpeed Insights API overview and runPagespeed method reference.
- Prepare the URL list. Put one complete URL in each row of a source column. Remove blank rows and decide how you want to handle duplicate URLs, redirects, and URLs with query parameters.
- Choose settings once. Set the strategy to mobile or desktop and select the Lighthouse categories you want. The API defaults to desktop; if you omit the category, the method reference says only Performance runs.
- Request results one URL at a time. Have your script call
runPagespeedfor each input and retain the requested URL and the time of the attempt. - Extract a defined set of fields. Select the summary metrics and audit details you need instead of trying to place the entire nested response in a cell.
- Write rows in batches. Accumulate results and send fewer spreadsheet writes rather than issuing a separate write for every cell or result.
- Keep failures in the output. Record the URL, status or error, and attempt time even when the analysis fails. This makes it possible to retry selected rows without losing track of skipped pages.
Google’s getting-started guide documents the API request pattern and response. The loop, row design, and batching are implementation choices you add around that single-URL method.
Choose what the spreadsheet should capture
Keep one row per attempted URL and make the test settings visible. A practical column layout is:

| Column | What it records |
|---|---|
| Input URL | The URL provided to the request. |
| Final URL | The resolved URL reported in the response, when available. |
| Fetch time | When the script made the request, preferably in a consistent time zone. |
| Strategy | Mobile or desktop. |
| Categories | The requested Lighthouse categories, such as Performance or Accessibility. |
| Performance score | The Lighthouse Performance score, if returned. |
| Lab metrics and audit summaries | The selected Lighthouse metrics or audits relevant to your review. |
| Field data status and granularity | Whether CrUX data was available and whether it represents the page or the origin, when reported. |
| API status and error | Success or failure information, including an error message when returned. |
| Lighthouse version | The version reported in the response, when present. |
These columns make comparisons interpretable: a mobile result is not a desktop result, and a page-level CrUX value should not be mistaken for an origin-level value. Keep the raw response separately if you need later re-parsing, but avoid making an unfiltered JSON dump the only report.
Interpret lab results and field data separately
PSI combines two kinds of information. Lighthouse lab analysis runs under controlled conditions and is useful for diagnosing performance issues. CrUX field data summarizes real-user experiences over a collection window, so it answers a different question and can vary in availability. Google describes the distinction in About PageSpeed Insights.

- Lab data: Use it to investigate page behavior under the test conditions. Do not treat a lab score as a direct measurement of every visitor’s experience.
- Page-level field data: When there are enough eligible real-user samples, CrUX may provide data for the specific page.
- Origin-level field data: If page-level samples are insufficient, PSI may use origin-level data. Label its granularity in the spreadsheet rather than presenting it as a page-specific result.
- No field data: An origin can also lack enough eligible data. Record that field data is unavailable; do not interpret the absence as a zero score or a failed Lighthouse run.
Google’s getting-started guide says CrUX data in the PSI API is planned for discontinuation and recommends the CrUX API or CrUX History API for continued access. The cited guidance does not establish a completion date, so verify Google’s current migration notice before depending on PSI’s field-data response. If you add CrUX separately, keep its results and provenance identifiable rather than silently mixing them with PSI lab results.

Do not assume the spreadsheet service’s quota is the same as the PSI API’s quota. The current precise PSI API limit is not established here; check the applicable quota for your Google Cloud project and pace requests accordingly. Design the job to pause, retry, and resume instead of relying on an assumed request rate.

- Sheets API: Google documents 300 read requests per minute per project and 60 per minute per user per project, with equivalent write limits. Its guidance recommends exponential backoff after HTTP 429 responses and suggests a 2 MB maximum payload for performance. These are Sheets API limits, not PSI request limits. See Google Sheets API usage limits.
- Apps Script: URL Fetch, trigger runtime, and other quotas apply separately and vary by account type. Google’s quotas page lists examples of 20,000 URL Fetch calls per day for consumer accounts and 100,000 for Workspace accounts; limits may change, and quota exhaustion can stop a script. Check the current Apps Script quotas for the account you will use before estimating how many URLs a run can complete.
- CrUX API, if used separately: Chrome documents 150 queries per minute per Google Cloud project and about a two-day delay from current time. That figure applies to the CrUX API, not PSI’s
runPagespeedmethod. See the CrUX API documentation.
For any service that returns HTTP 429, back off rather than immediately repeating the same request. Save completed rows as the run proceeds, track which inputs remain unfinished, and retry only failed or unprocessed URLs. This limits lost work if a script reaches a runtime or service quota.

Record the test date, input URL, final URL when returned, strategy, requested categories, response status, and Lighthouse version when present. Lighthouse changes independently of the PSI API version, and response fields can change. Google’s release notes state that PSI and its API were updated to Lighthouse 13.0 on October 20, 2025, and warn that some updates can bring breaking response changes. For that reason, parse defensively: treat optional fields as optional, retain an error/status path, and do not make one rigid response shape your only success condition. Scores and field-data coverage are not guaranteed to be identical from run to run, so preserve settings and timestamps before comparing results.
