You can run generative AI on an Android phone without sending prompts to cloud inference or signing in to an AI service, but the route matters. Android’s AICore service powers selected features in supported apps; for a general local chat, install an app that downloads or imports a model, then test it offline. Neither route guarantees that every part of an app stays offline or that every phone is compatible.
Choose between Android AICore and a local-model app

Set up a local AI model and test it offline

Check your phone and decide what you need
For AICore, check that the phone runs Android 14 or later, then look under Settings → Google profile → All Services → Privacy & Security → System services for AICore. The menu may differ, and the service may not be available on every device. If you want a general conversational interface, use a local-model app instead.

Install an app and choose a model
Google AI Edge Gallery is a current starting point for trying downloadable local chat models and compatible imports. Its Play listing says the app is in active development, so expect features and model support to evolve. Review the model’s supported tasks and license, as well as the app’s current privacy information, before choosing.

Download before disconnecting
Install the app and download its model over Wi-Fi. Leave enough free storage for the download and the app to load the model; size varies. As context, Android’s developer distribution documentation permits individual AI packs up to 1.5 GB compressed and a 4 GB maximum cumulative app size. Those are developer distribution limits, not a prediction of how large a consumer model will be. Android’s on-device AI documentation explains the limits.

Run a simple prompt, then repeat in airplane mode
Ask a short question while online, enable airplane mode, and ask it again. If the app returns a response, the inference path used in that test did not need a network connection. This does not establish that the app’s other features, analytics, crash reporting, or updates never communicate online.
Check memory, storage, and performance expectations
There is no universal Android RAM threshold established for running local AI. Requirements depend on the app, model, and phone. The Thinai Play listing, updated April 22, 2026, recommends 4 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB for its 2B-or-larger parameter models. Kenosis AI describes its own MiniCPM 5 1B configuration as intended to run on 4 GB. These are vendor-specific recommendations, not cross-app compatibility guarantees.

Google AI Edge Gallery gives no single minimum RAM figure in its cited Play listing. Google says performance depends on the device’s CPU and GPU. A model that loads on one phone may feel too slow or have limited usable context on another. Local models can be useful for bounded tasks such as short-text summarization, but do not assume they match a leading cloud model across every task. Their knowledge also does not update while you are offline.

An 8 GB RAM phone may be a reasonable target for some larger-model use, but it is not a universal minimum or a promise of good performance.

Understand what “local” means for privacy
Google’s AICore support page says supported task data remains on-device and is not sent to Google or the cloud. Google’s developer documentation also says Gemini Nano inference avoids server calls, while noting that AICore model downloads are routed through Private Compute Services. First-time setup or model updates can therefore need connectivity even if later inference works offline. Google’s AICore support page and Gemini Nano developer documentation give the platform details.
For Google AI Edge Gallery, distinguish the model’s inference from the app’s other data practices: its Play listing says inference is on-device, and its data-safety panel says the app may collect app activity and app information/performance. Check the current listing and permissions for the version you install; disclosures can change.

- Check permissions and the store’s current data-safety section.
- Use airplane mode to test whether the task you care about works without a connection.
- Do not treat an offline response as proof that every app process is offline.
- For sensitive prompts, choose an app whose data-handling disclosures you understand.
What to expect from offline use
After a model has been downloaded, local inference can work without internet, but app, model, and device compatibility determine whether it loads and how responsive it is. Offline access also means no live information lookup through the disconnected connection: use a separate trusted source when a prompt needs current facts. No universal speed figure applies across phones and prompts; a published Android developer example describes a particular optimized Gemini Nano prompt iteration improving from 13 seconds to under 2 seconds, not a benchmark for ordinary devices.
