You can run a Discord bot on a desktop or laptop you already own and avoid a separate hosting bill. The catch is that the bot is only online while that computer is powered on, awake, connected to the internet, and running the bot program. Discord provides the bot platform and API, but the program itself runs wherever you run it, and Discord does not promise uptime for a home machine.
What has to stay running for the bot to stay online
A home-hosted bot depends on four things at once. If any one of them stops, the bot goes offline:
- Power: the computer must stay plugged in and switched on.
- Sleep state: the machine must not sleep or hibernate, because a sleeping computer cannot hold a network connection.
- Internet: your connection must stay up, and your router must keep forwarding traffic to the machine.
- The bot process: the program must keep running. A crash, a closed terminal window, or a logout can end it.
Free does not mean costless. Electricity and internet service are still consumed, and a computer left running around the clock uses more of both than one used for a few hours a day.
How Discord connects to your bot
Discord’s developer documentation describes two patterns. Which one your bot uses decides whether a home computer can serve it.

Gateway WebSocket (persistent connection)
Most general-purpose bots open a persistent WebSocket connection to Discord’s Gateway to receive real-time events such as new messages and member changes. Your computer makes the outbound connection, so you do not need to open ports on your router for this pattern. The connection lasts only while the process is running and the machine is awake and online.
HTTP interactions endpoint
Bots that handle only slash commands and UI components can instead receive requests at an HTTP interactions endpoint, without keeping a Gateway connection open. This model still needs an endpoint that Discord can reach at all times. A home computer that is asleep, offline, or behind a network that blocks inbound requests cannot answer, so this model does not make a home PC a reliable host by itself.
Webhooks are a related but narrower tool. Discord’s documentation notes that a webhook can suit a bot that only posts messages into a channel, but a webhook cannot listen for events or respond to interactions the way a bot can. Do not rewrite an existing bot to use a different model without first checking what it does. The official overview is at Bots & Companion Apps.

Setup steps on your existing computer
- Create an application. Sign in to the Discord Developer Portal, create a new application, and open its bot page to add a bot user. Discord’s Getting Started with Discord Apps guide walks through the application, bot page, token, intents, installation contexts, scopes, and permissions.
- Choose the installation scope and permissions. The quick-start describes the
applications.commandsscope for slash commands and thebotscope for server installation, followed by selecting permissions. Grant only the permissions the bot’s features need. Avoid the Administrator permission as a default, because it removes the protection that minimal permissions provide. - Enable only the intents your code requests. See the next section before turning on any privileged intent.
- Store the token privately. Put it in a local environment variable or a configuration file that is excluded from any public repository.
- Set up the project. Install the language runtime and bot library that your project documents, then run the bot once in a terminal to confirm it connects and responds in a test server. The steps depend on your language and library, so follow their documentation.
- Keep the computer available. Turn off sleep and hibernation for the period you need the bot online, and make sure the machine does not shut down for updates without warning. Menu names differ between Windows, macOS, and Linux, so use your operating system’s current documentation for these settings.
- Plan for restarts. If the process stops, you need to relaunch it. Set up automatic startup or a process supervisor only after you have verified it works on your operating system, and test it by restarting the machine on purpose.
Privileged intents and review thresholds
Intents control which Gateway events Discord sends to your bot. Some are privileged because they expose sensitive data, including presence, member, and message-content data. Discord requires privileged intents to be enabled in the Developer Portal and also requested in your code. If the two do not match, the connection can fail, so check both places when a bot will not connect. The rules are described in Getting Started with Privileged Intent Review and in the Gateway documentation.
As of Discord’s current privileged-intent review documentation, which the source dates to 2026, the thresholds work like this:
- Under 10,000 unique users: you can toggle on the privileged intents your app needs in the Developer Portal.
- Over 10,000 unique users who can see the app across its servers: continued access to privileged intents requires review, and approved access must be reapplied for annually.
The threshold counts unique users, not servers. Discord changes platform rules from time to time, so confirm the current numbers in the documentation before you plan around them.

Token and account safety
The bot token is the credential that lets your program act as the bot. Treat it like a password. Discord’s getting-started guide states:
“Your token is used to authorize API requests and carry your app’s permissions, so they are highly sensitive. Make sure to never share your token or check it into any kind of version control.”
- Use a bot account, not a personal account. Discord’s OAuth2 documentation describes bot users as accounts for automation, and Discord’s support article on Automated User Accounts (Self-Bots) says developers must not automate standard user accounts outside the bot and OAuth2 API.
- If the token leaks, reset it in the Developer Portal, then update the value in your local configuration and restart the process. The getting-started guide notes that a token cannot be viewed again once it has been generated, so store your working copy securely from the start.
Where home hosting fails and how to recover
Most outages on a home computer come from one of the four dependencies listed at the top of this article. The table shows what each interruption does and what you can do about it.
| Interruption | Effect on the bot | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Computer sleeps, hibernates, or shuts down | The Gateway connection drops and the bot appears offline. | Wake or power on the computer, then relaunch the bot. Disable sleep for the hours you need it online. |
| Internet connection or router drops | The bot cannot reach Discord, and it may not reconnect until the network returns. | Restore the connection and confirm the bot reconnects. Recovery after a long outage depends on your library’s reconnection behavior, so test it. |
| Bot process crashes or the terminal is closed | The bot stops responding while the computer keeps running. | Relaunch the process. Automatic restart is not covered by Discord’s documentation and depends on your operating system and tooling. |
| Power interruption | The computer and bot stop immediately. | Not stated by Discord’s documentation. A battery backup can keep the machine running through short outages, but it does not solve internet or process failures. |
| Token exposed | Anyone with the token can act as the bot until it is reset. | Reset the token in the Developer Portal, update your local configuration, and restart the process. |
For a bot that people depend on, the practical standard is a bot that comes back quickly after an interruption rather than one that never stops. Test the relaunch steps before you need them.
